The Dead Bunnies

, , ,

Today at my job was a day of sorrow. Two bunny kittens died - with only a few hours' interval.

Of course the kids who looked after the particular bunnies were close to devastated. They cried, I comforted as I could best, telling them about nature's ways and that everything would be okay eventually. They asked if there was a such thing as a bunny heaven? I had a second to think it over and said yes, I believe there is.

Then, after the burial and after having crafted two crosses and written on them, the girls made a prayer which was said simultaneously and in which they prayed that God would see to it that there would be sufficient amounts of carrots and green grass in Heaven?

At that point I was touched, too.

Good answer, Allan.

Now, go inside and have a drink.

Angelikiellinidata Tuesday, October 27, 2009 3:50:22 PM

awwwww it is a heart breaking !

sad I hope the kids forget soon and enjoy many other pets and take care of them and be happy ...

der WandersmannderWandersmann Tuesday, October 27, 2009 3:52:19 PM

No ... never forget. But learn to live with it and go on.

Allanricewood Tuesday, October 27, 2009 4:09:22 PM

That's just life, isn't it?

I remember what it was like when I was a kid. Losing a pet, especially for the first time, was tough indeed. But as Wandersmann says, learn and live. We must all do that.

In such situations, the adult present needs to be very understanding and choose words carefully. I hope I managed.

I'll consider that drink!

Awww, so sad. You managed well Allan. I remember the first pet we lost. A big white Tom cat named Bruiser. He was a tough cat but back in those days, no one had cats given shots for Distemper. He got it and was very sick, so the whole family took him to the vet to be put to sleep. We were all crying, even my mom and dad.

Yep ... I still mist up at the loss of my magnificent white lion from congestive heart failure, and my dear lady dog from crippling arthritis. Both of those were well over ten years ago. My wife still finds me in a blue funk when I occasionally find a tuft of white cat hair.

Now you made me remember our kitten Miu - she was only few months old when she fall from a roof and broke a neck. Me and my brother were in grief for entire month cry

You handled the situation very kindly and well, Allan. It's sad that death is a such a necessary experience, but I think there are bunnies in Heaven, too.

saw this already on FB... loved your post and sharing, Allan. such a sweet photograph and sentiment, "in which they prayed that God would see to it that there would be sufficient amounts of carrots and green grass in Heaven?" would bring a tear...

I cannot take anymore pet fish in our home, too many funerals as the years have gone by... and it is heartwrenching to awaken to such trauma.

I am sure you were of comfort to the girls. (nevermind you have had to play Mr. MacGregor in the past, shh. delete my comment if necessary.)

I know God cares about what we care about...

Lost out on a pair of mittens burying them though..

It is strange with this love for an animal most of us experience. But it is significant.

Thanks, all for the nice comments.

So very sad, It's such a hard thing for children and adults alike to go through. It is part of life though and their lives will be richer for having had the experience. You handled it very well, and that can make all the difference.

Terrible. I don't think I would have set much of an example for the girls if I had been there -- I would have broke down crying.

Saw the biggest rabbit I've ever seen, dead on the road verge, today. About the size of a small fox.

Well, my idea of heaven has plenty of carrots, green grass (no pollen though), and bunnies.

I get this here vision that Heaven looks like something from the series called "Teletubbies"?

When they're Playboy Bunnies you're getting close to the idea of Islamic Heaven..

KimberlySqueakeyCat Sunday, November 1, 2009 1:31:50 AM

thats sad, but you did good

daxonmacs Sunday, November 1, 2009 11:55:17 AM

There's something heart tearing when a child is grieving.
The photo shows a more serene scene, in my opinion.

Allanricewood Sunday, November 1, 2009 12:48:36 PM

Thanks.

It looks serene, I'll agree to that. But emotions are internal and hard to photograph. You know, I can't allow myself to show the kids' faces in public - so we'll have to do with this around here smile

daxonmacs Sunday, November 1, 2009 1:53:29 PM

It's good enough Allan, the old lady's hand captured enough struggle and emotion, not always necessary to show a face.
Impressionism, right?

Allanricewood Sunday, November 1, 2009 1:56:01 PM

Impressionism - that's what they called it in highschool

Allan, you are one very good educator. I really mean it. It can be seen through your posts.

CynthiaCynthia23 Thursday, November 12, 2009 2:59:28 PM

Sweet, Allan, so much kindness and comfort you have given to these children. up

Allanricewood Thursday, November 12, 2009 7:29:26 PM

Thank you, good people. Nice words.
