one eye, kitten
News Edition: 04/07/2006
Here kitty, kitty, kitty GRANBY, N.Y.-- The one-eyed, noseless kitten that inspired an international debate last year over whether it was a hoax is coming to a new museum of oddities in central New York.

The museum founder, who believes in creationism, said the kitten is meant to launch another debate about how science and religion intersect.
The Oregon woman who owned the kitten said she turned down Ripley's Believe it or Not! and sold the remains to John Adolfi of Granby because she liked his religious reasons for wanting them.
"We didn't want Cy becoming a joke or part of a personal collection," Traci Allen said. "But John was so heartfelt, you could tell he was genuine and sincere."
Adolfi would not say how much he paid for the kitten, named Cy, for Cyclops. He said he plans to have it embalmed Wednesday at a local funeral home.
The kitten died in December, a day after being born. Veterinarians in Oregon said it suffered from a rare disorder called holoprosencephaly.
Cy will be displayed in a glass jar in the Lost World Museum, which Adolfi hopes to open in nearby Phoenix this fall.
Other exhibits will include giant plants and eggs, deformed animal remains and archaeological finds, Adolfi said.

baby, murder, slash, throat
News Edition: 04/13/2006
BOSTON -- A woman in Boston has pleaded guilty to slitting the throat of her friend's baby to retaliate for being kicked out of the friend's apartment.
The 9-month-old was killed in a snowbank in 2002. Natalie Rodriguez blamed what she called her "dysfunctional ways of living" for the drunken rage. She was sentenced to life in prison and will be eligible for parole when she is 49.
The boy's mother said her son's murder has destroyed her family.
Rodriguez said she silently lifted the boy out of his crib in the middle of the night, picked up a knife from the kitchen, placed him face down in a snowbank in a neighbor's driveway, and slashed his throat. She then hid the body under a trash can in the driveway.
She wept in court Tuesday as she apologized to the family.

rent, sex
News Edition: 04/17/2006
Wealthy New Yorkers are advertising rent-free rooms to women in exchange for sexual favours.
The New York Daily News reports the trend and lists a number of ads on the popular Craigslist.org website.
One, entitled "Take Care of My Needs and Live Rent Free", offers: "All you have to do is take care of all my urges, and I'll let you live in a one-bedroom apartment I own rent free."
Another ad reads: "All I am looking for is an attractive, playful, and submissive woman who is uninhibited to my proposal... substituting rent for sexual encounters."
In the posting, the 33-year-old man living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, adds that the room comes with a TV, DVD player, internet-ready computer and a phone line.
"I don't need the rent but would like to fill it up with a woman who would love to show her appreciation for my generosity," he wrote.
But Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne warned that the advertisements amounted to prostitution.
"It is illegal to trade or solicit sex for monetary consideration or other consideration," he said.

pedophile, necrophile
News Edition: 04/18/2006
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Prosecutors in Oklahoma have filed first-degree murder charges against Kevin Underwood.
The body of his neighbor Jamie Rose Bolin, a ten-year-old girl, was found in a plastic tub in Underwood's closet, and police said her death was part of his elaborate plan to eat human flesh.
An affidavit from police said Underwood has confessed to killing Bolin. Investigators think Underwood killed Bolin, then sexually assaulted her as part of his elaborate plan to eat human flesh.
Jamie Rose Bolin had deep saw marks on her neck and was apparently hit several times with a wooden cutting board, Purcell police Chief David Tompkins said.
Authorities believe Underwood lured the girl into his apartment, beat her over the head with a wooden cutting board and suffocated her with his hands and duct tape.
Agents removed a meat tenderiser and barbecue skewers from his apartment, one floor down from where the girl lived with her father.
"Regarding a potential motive," Tompkins said, "this appears to have been part of a plan to kidnap a person, rape them, torture them, kill them, cut off their head, drain the body of blood, rape the corpse, eat the corpse, then dispose of the organs and bones." He and the girl lived in the same apartment complex in Purcell, about 40 miles south of Oklahoma City.
People who know Underwood describe him as quiet, "boring" and seemingly trustworthy.
Police said he also targeted other potential victims, including an adult woman and a 5-year-old boy.
Underwood kept an online diary in which he described himself as "single, bored, and lonely," but "pretty happy." On it, he joked about cannibalism, discussed the effects of not taking his anti-depression medication and mentioned "dangerously weird" fantasies. In the end, he said all he wanted in life was "to be able to live like a normal person."
However, in an entry two months ago, Underwood wrote that he struggled with depression and social interaction.
He also mentions cannibalism, asking "If you were a cannibal, what would you wear to dinner?" and responding: "The skin of last night's main course."
Underwood's mother said she doesn't know how this happened, noting that her son was "always a wonderful boy." Connie Underwood said she feels "so terrible."
"I would like to be able to tell her family how sorry we are. I just feel so terrible," Connie Underwood said.
Officials are calling it a "horrific crime." They've released a lot of details about their investigation. Authorities said he drew their attention when he "just wasn't acting right" at a vehicle checkpoint set up near the girl's home.
Purcell Police Chief David Tompkins said Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents executed search warrants at the apartment of Underwood, Jamie's downstairs neighbor. They found among other things, a decorative dagger, a hacksaw , duct tape, meat tenderizer, a computer and a wooden cutting board.
They believe the killer had plotted over time to abduct, rape, kill, devour and dismember someone and chose Bolin as the victim the day she disappeared.
Tompkins said the child was found unclothed inside a large, blue Rubbermaid tub and had deep lacerations to her neck, which they believe were signs of an attempt to decapitate her.
Kuykendall said preliminary findings indicate the child died of blunt force trauma to the head and asphyxiation. It's believed she was hit three or four times on the head with the cutting board, then a hand and some duct tape were placed over her mouth.
