Charles Moore speaks sense (again)

, , ,

Charles Moore, while editor of the Daily Telegraph, once wrote an opinion piece recommending the people of Northern Ireland vote for Ian Paisley, but that was a long time ago so I won't hold that against him. Since Moore stopped being editor of the Daily Telegraph and went to writing the main Saturday opinion column he has tended to talk a lot of sense.

Particularly this article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/charlesmoore/4076951/It-was-a-golden-Elizabethan-Age--we-wont-see-its-like-again.html

He reminds us how good life has been in the UK compared to many other nations, but also that the freedoms we take for granted nowadays are not guaranteed to continue. First the government increases surveillance, then it tries to think how it can regulate and control. Also, other nations and powers would seek to destabilise Britain.

Read the article or at least think of all the things you take for granted that are impossible in other countries. Maybe it's a good time to compare the UK to Cuba, the socialist, planned-market utopia! 50 years of repression, including being a pawn of the USSR and now desperately trying to get oil for cheap from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

UPDATE: Fujitsu Siemens Storagebird Solo 35-UB 1TB Review

, , , ...

My Fujitsu Siemens Storagebird Solo 35-UB 1TB Review has proven mighty popular. It is my second most read post, so I feel I must make this update. I think I'll also contact Fujitsu Siemens too in due course, because it could be relatively serious issue. In terms of data, the Western Digital HDD seems to be fine, though I haven't had to test out the Time Machine recovery process yet. However, unlike my old IDE HDD enclosure, the FSC (Fujitsu Siemens Computers) Storagebird does not have an earthed power converter. The power converter has a double insulated logo but, when the power converter is connected to mains and the device and the mains switch is on, the metal case of the device is tingly to the touch.

This used to happen when the ring main in our house that powered the tumble dryer was not earthed correctly. The inner metal cylinder of the tumber dryer would be tingly to the touch.

The Storagebird does not tingle when connected to my MacBook via the USB cable or when the power is switched off at the mains supply socket. That and the fact the device barely even vibrates when the Time Machine backup process is occurring means I don't think the problem is drive vibration.

Also, when the device is tingling, but the B end of the USB cable is in the device and the A end is disconnected, the tingling stops when the I touch the metal of the A end of the USB cable.

Opera feature request: remember all recently closed tabs

,

Currently Opera forgets all about the tabs that were open in a window when that window is closed. Recently a friend of mine used my laptop when I was not around and closed an Opera window with loads of open tabs. I hadn't bookmarked them because I never close them.

So my feature request for the next version of Opera is that it remember all recently closed tabs in the same way as it remembers your browser history, e.g. for 2 weeks and with a similar interface for reopening tabs as for browsing your history.

Starter For 10 Review

, , , ...

I remember seeing the trailer for Starter For 10 at the cinema and regretting not making sure I got to at least audition for my university’s University Challenge team. I’m not especially passionate about the show, but I do like to watch it if I get the chance and I do think I’ve always answered a good proportion of the answers correctly.

I also regret not getting round to watching Starter For 10 at the cinema and had to make do with BBC2, but at least, for once, I got to watch the start!

Having seen the film now, on one hand I’m glad I didn’t go to see it with my mates, not because they wouldn’t have enjoyed it, but because I’d rather have seen it with a wonderful woman. Maybe sometime if I ever get my bachelor pad set up, I’ll find a wonderful woman to watch it with on DVD or something.

The central character obviously isn’t an exact analogue of me, since he manages to have a couple of actual dates with women and he knows more than I do. But like me he is somewhat gauche, a little eccentric and likes people to know that he knows things. Lots of things. I love general knowledge. Sometimes I do read books of facts, but more often I just absorb information.

Enough about me. Starter For 10 is a sweet film of love and loss, as well as realising whom you really love, of mending broken friendships and getting back on track after your only dream has been crushed by your own stupid mistake. It reminds me a bit of Orange County, which is possibly slightly better, but in a different way. Orange County is bigger, brasher and more happens. Starter For 10 is more realistic and more human, perhaps more grown up. Thankfully Starter For 10’s smut is very mild compared to Orange County and is even funnier. Plus, Rebecca Hall, despite her character’s socialism is very attractive. Must not obsess.

Perhaps there is something in Rebecca’s Jewishness (that is the character’s first name too) and that fact she forgives him for chasing another woman and that Yahweh both embraces the gentiles and forgives their sins. Or maybe there isn’t. Sometimes I read too much into these things.

Comparing the film with Orange County is a little harsh, because they are very different despite the similarities, but looking back, Starter For 10 is a little sparse. It still kept me interested the whole way through and wasn’t predictable, I just think it could have done with a couple more madcap antics from Brian’s housemates or maybe another stumble before finally kissing his true love.

It’s a good film. Maybe I was just expecting too much, it is entertaining, engaging, has a good soundtrack, even just enough violence, and you will laugh, but it left me wanting a little more.
