Waiting for the Intrepid Ibex to download!

, ,

Ubuntu's "Intrepid Ibex" has been released to the world! I've been downloading the ISO since morning (I have a "broadband connection" here which takes me 8 or so hours to get the file). I've been waiting for a chance to try out Ubuntu from a long time, and I've decided that now is the right time...
Why do I want to switch? Well just for the heck of it... I've been using Windows XP for a heck of a long time and have no plans to switch to Windows Vista anytime soon (might give windows 7 a shot when it's out). The thing I've realized about windows operating systems is that you need to wait for at least a few months after the original release date to actually have something that works perfectly, so till they get things sorted out I'd love to try out Ubuntu.

My computer is also a very old system, most people laugh at me when I tell them the specs;
Athlon XP 2000+

768 MB RAM

Nvidia 6200

Motherboard (Can't remember)

Suprisingly this sytem has served me pretty well... I've used it for hours on end to download various "things" from the net over the years. I've probably re-installed XP on it about 5 to 6 times only... which isn't too bad I guess. Playing games like Half Life - 2 and Fear was still possbile on my system though it was at low settings but I had no issues with that.

Ok back to things I expect from Ubuntu... I want it to work out of the box, but that dosen't mean I won't run around fixing things if there are any problems. The ubuntu forums have a ton of people on it who seem like they're always ready to help. Most of all I want my internet to work properly on Ubuntu! This shouldn't be a problem because it's an ethernet modem broadband connection so shoud have no problems.. but sitll can't say right?
Well as I wait for the download to complete I must find something else to do.

Peace!

I've got one of those old boxes sitting here as well. I use it strictly as a server running linux and apache. It's never failed.

How did you get on? I recommended someone get a second hand box to learn Linux on. The idea of her getting a modern system just to use Windows with in the present financial state of affairs and all....

I suggested a P3 would do with 500 MB of RAM. What do you think? A bit dodgy? It should certainly be cheap enough.
