Tips on shooting wildlife images

Ok before anything else let me say that I have shot wildlife images only a couple of times in places like Mysore, Mangalore and Mandya. I’ve been able to shoot images of Mugger crocodiles at Ranganthittu bird sanctuary (Yes, the lake that you can row across is filled with them), Karanji lake also plays host to a lot of birds because of its calm and serene lake while they have a small aviary inside it too. So with this limited amount of experience let me share what I have learnt:

1.) Patience

2.) Attentiveness

3.) Season/Knowledge

4.) Silence

5.) Fun

What I saw today...

, ,

A King Cobra is what I saw today. Not one but two. This is the first time I had ever seen a King Cobra in almost 10 years. The 2 were males and they were fighting it out amongst themselves for the affections of a female that was nearby. It was unfortunate that I couldn't get a picture of them even though I had my camera in my backpack.

The snakes were pretty big. One was approximately 8 to 9 feet long while the other was definitely past the 12 feet mark. When I first saw them they had raised their bodies up and were sizing each other up. With their bodies raised like that they would have come up a little higher than my waist. After some quick research on Wikipedia I found out that they can grow up to such lengths that when it raises it body off the ground it can stare a human being right in the eye. I'm glad I didn't have one of these Cobra's staring at me.. but I wouldn't mind.

Today was definitely an awesome day all because of these 2 snakes.

Just so everyone knows.. I love animals, reptiles(even though some are really creepy), fish, birds and others being that share our world. Lets try and make it a better place for them and us.

Peace out..
