What is managements role?

, ,

This is a question that has plagued me ever since I started working. My first job was for a news channel here in Bangalore. I was a crime reporter, I enjoyed my work and put in many hours of work everyday to become the best at my work. Then 3 months into this dream job I quit. I took my salary and walked out. Why? Well because I was tired of the management and the way they treated me there (proof that I wasn't the only person who felt this way? The day after I walked out 15 others did the same and people still keep walking in and out of this organization).

After taking a break for a month I got a new job. The first 4 months were the best thing ever but then suddenly everything changed, I don't know for sure what made things change but they did. Things got worse and now I've decided I've had enough. So next month I put in my papers, again I make this choice because of the terrible management.

My friend Varun said it best, "Managements job is to either convince or confuse!", I can't help but agree.

Starting off as a photographer

, , , ...

I've been taking and making images for a long time now. I've also put them online and sent them to all my friends and family across the country and the world. So why would this post be titled "Starting off as a photographer?" Well thats because this week I sold my photographs for the first time ever!

A colleague at work who I know very well wanted to gift his newly wed brother something that he would like. He had seen my blog a couple of times and he came and asked me if I could sell him some of my images. I was more than happy to do so. The three images that he chose were from my collection on Hampi. So I got the images blown up to (8 * 10, they came out great!) and had them framed.

My colleague was delighted with the framed photographs and couldn't wait to get home to present them to his brother. When he did finally get home, pretty late since we were closing our April issue, his brother was ecstatic and called me up and thanked me for the framed photographs.

So I guess this will be the start of something. I've been planning on becoming a professional photographer and writer for a long time now. The writing thing is all done and I am pretty happy with my work, but now I will focus more on my photography and go to work for myself very very soon.

Sunday Morn...

,

It's been a long week at work, done a ton of work. The January issue should have about 3 articles written by me... unless something changes... Very happy and proud about that. Can I suggest that anyone living in Bangalore go out and pick up the January edition of 080 when it comes out? :D

I have written about a couple of different topics which all hold a lot of interest for me. Thats something that I have loved about my new job. I'm always doing something that I am interested in. In the coming issue I've tried to make a difference in people's life through the story that I've done for the culture lead... Here's hoping it makes the final cut and its of some help to the people featured in it.

Since I've started working at Explocity my writing has improved in leaps and bounds. Having my work scrutinized by my editor in chief and the senior copy editors allow me to realize where I have made mistakes and where I can make improvements. What I need to do more of now is reading! It's not that I don't ahve time but more like I've been lazy. I've got a couple of books thta I have started reading but not completed. I think reading more will definitely help my writing too.

Well anyways... hoping to make the most out of Sunday! My uncle is going to be at home today so looking forward to that!

Back To Work

Work

Well today was my 4th day working at Explocity. It's a publishing house which regularly puts out magazines in 6 states across India and a city guide book (with listings of hotels, bars, etc) for each of those cities and also New York City and Dubai. They also have a website for these places where these events are updated on a daily basis.

I'm working as a copy editor at Explocity in Bangalore city. The people I work with are superb, I'm surrounded by 5 women who do a lot of the work and help me to understand whats happening and how to get the work done since this is the first time I'm working as a copy editor.

My boss was kind enough to allow me a shot at writing the Edit (a short one page article about travelling, that appears on the front of the city guides) on my first day. I wrote about a funny thing that happened to me while I was in the US. He loved it and wanted to put it on the magazine for December... but the big boss thought they should go with something more festive this month. So my Edit will probably feature on the 2nd edition in the month of January! I'll be sure to post it up here once its gets published!

Anyway Explocity is hosting an event along with Kingfisher it's called The Explocity Festival Of Jazz and Blues (Thats the blog thats was just started up). I have been responsible for writing the Event information thats will be on City Info (The city guide magazine in Bangalore) and I had to write a longer editorial about the bands performing at the festival for the magazine 080.

Problems

Well my problems seem really small compared to those faced by the people of Bombay which started last night and seem to be continuing into today too. The bomb blasts have really rocked not only one of India's premier city but also the rest of the country. It's times like these that make me wonder how people manage to just wake up and go back to work and act like nothing has really happened. I also wonder what the hell our government is doing? How could they let this happen when not a few months ago Bangalore, Delhi and other cities were affected by serial bomb blasts? What the hell is our Anti Terrorist Task Force doing? Don't we have any way to stop these blasts and attacks on our soil?

Hope

This has nothing to do with the bomb blasts but it was just something that happened about 10 minutes ago. There's a pharmacy which is about a 5 minute walk from my house. I have been there about twice in the last 3 months that I have been living at my own place in Bangalore. So I get there and ask for my some tablets and an inhaler (I have Asthma), the bill comes out to 217 and I only have 200 Rupees and don't have my wallet. I tell the dude I'll come back tomorrow for the inhaler but he says no... Take them both and you can return the money when you come next time. So there I am standing shocked and I ask him how he knows I'll come back he says he doesn't know for sure but he's hoping I'll come back and pay him. It's things like this that allow me to still have hope for not just this city but the rest of this world.

Peace and Love...
