Temple of Jupiter Anxur

, ,

Far up on a hill in Terracina, Italy lies the ruins of an old temple assumingly dedicated to the Roman god Jupiter. The oldest parts of the temple dates back to the 4th century BC, but mainly it's from the 1st century BC. Still pretty old...

In order to get there, you must walk up to more than 200 metres above sea level on a path that starts out good enough, but slowly increases more and more in width the higher you get and also gets filled with some strange animal faeces.
Or you can take a bus.
I opted for the path...
The first thing I had to do was decide on which way to go:

My well developed logic skills told me to go right, since that's where the temple was.

Next up was cursing the sun for starting to break through the wonderfully protective clouds. Walking up a hillside in the middle of the day in more than 35°C isn't the same as soaking it up on the beach... But once I conquered it, it was all worth it!
Here's looking back down on the path:

I won't bore you with lots of pictures from the ruins, but here are two of my favourites:
From the big temple:

And a fresco, still visible today. Can you see the foot?

That concludes this first peek into parts of my vacation.
Perhaps I'll get around to creating a photo album one of these days too...

I see you have been busier than me!The itch

Darko 31. August 2008, 16:50

I like the perspective on the 4th one. Excellent photo
It was only 35C?

r♡se 31. August 2008, 16:57

Thank you Darko  I took several pictures like that one. Will have to make an album soon!

:sst: That was in the shadow!

Darko 31. August 2008, 17:02

You are welcome

:sst: it is always measured in the shadow, didn`t you know that P:

Wow, what a fantastic tour you had. And I love the temple photo!
I wish I had been there too!

David Scott Aubrey 31. August 2008, 21:34

More! Yey! :D

r♡se 31. August 2008, 22:15

Tilla - Thank you  That photo is one of my favourites.
Maybe you can come next time .

Carol - :D

David - Thanks :D. I went up from the left where it wasn't nearly as steep as the front. You can't really see the path on the picture, but you can get an idea of high up it is.

r♡se 31. August 2008, 22:16

 Thanks Cois.

Carol 31. August 2008, 22:16

Perhaps you should have turned left at the sign. It might have been the scenic route. :left:

I don't see a path but the hill doesn't look as steep from this angle. You should have climbed the hill from the other direction and seen how much longer it took you to reach the summit.

:joins the horde demanding more pictures:

I did not like the "maybe" in that sentence. awww

No Moe, the scenic route was to the right. However, walking on an Italian road is hazardous. No pavements, you know, and as somebody I know once said - "On Italian roads, there's always an Italian around the next corner"
That's why I took off on the path instead.

It wasn't very steep, but I thought you'd see how far down the houses are. That's where I started from :D.
:sst: I would never be able to climb it from the front :faint:!

Sorry Tilla awww. Be sure to get in the suitcase next time, then .

Cois 1. September 2008, 07:48

Did you get a little Italian in you? you know.. :left: food.. p:

r♡se 1. September 2008, 08:32

You mean did I eat an Italian with fava beans and a nice Chianti?

Santa Furie 1. September 2008, 08:41

Attila 1. September 2008, 08:44

Now I definitely want to come along next time!

Cois 1. September 2008, 21:07

That's not what I meant but let's go with the Hannibal analogy..

I know, and yes let's p:

Santa Furie 1. September 2008, 21:37

What did he mean?

theoddbod 1. September 2008, 21:41

The Sophie analogy, surely? p:

Cois 2. September 2008, 00:22

Pizza.. *drools*

r♡se 2. September 2008, 07:25

I had the hugest pizza I've ever had. It lasted two days

Moesring 2. September 2008, 07:26

What was on this pizza? Minstrels perhaps?:chef:

r♡se 2. September 2008, 08:06

If you had Minstrels on a pizza - would it last two days? p:

Moesring 2. September 2008, 08:24

Not for me personally. I'd probably cry at the waste of good Minstrels, throw it away and have a more palatable pizza instead. :chef::D

r♡se 2. September 2008, 08:42

:eyes: Throw the Minstrels away?
Even though I've never had a Minstrel, I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do on a pizza next to the mushrooms and ham...

Santa Furie 2. September 2008, 14:19

Don't forget the spicy chicken.

Cois 3. September 2008, 07:17

Or the spicy kitten..

Attila 3. September 2008, 07:19

Don't you even think that thought!

r♡se 3. September 2008, 08:03

Yeah
The kitten is sweet :D.

Attila 3. September 2008, 11:16

Cois 4. September 2008, 20:30

:chef: sweet curry chicken..

Marcus 15. September 2008, 05:40

I want to visit that temple one day! More pictures from the temple, please. Wow, that picture of the arches is awesome, Rose!

r♡se 15. September 2008, 06:07

Thank you .
I haven't gotten around to creating a photo album yet, but maybe one day...

Santa Furie 15. September 2008, 08:56

One day soon!
*slams fist on Martini bar*
:D

r♡se 15. September 2008, 09:33

 Watch it! You're spilling the drinks!

Santa Furie 15. September 2008, 12:21

That's okay. I don't drink.

r♡se 15. September 2008, 13:26

Apparently, neither am I :irked:
