Holmenkollen falling
Thursday, 27. November 2008, 09:33:00
Yes, I have seen snow earlier this year, but yesterday I saw a man dressed in his ski suit.
A bit odd perhaps, considering there isn't any snow in the city but then - prepared tracks are only a subway ride away.
Norwegians claim to be born with skis on their feet, so people with skis are a quite common sight during the winter months. Needless to say, people around here are quite fond of winter and winter sports. And they are proud of their accomplishments in the latter.
The sight of ski-man got me thinking about a debate that went on here a while ago. Due to not meeting the standards for arranging the 2011 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, it was decided that Holmenkollen ski jump in Oslo should be demolished and replaced with a new up-to-date construction.
Because of its history and tradition - the tower has been around since 1939 - many people thought it was horrendous to demolish it while others happily embraced a new and improved ski jump.
Well, history and tradition had to bend this time, and demolishment started last month.
One of the reasons those opposed to a new ski jump used, were that Holmenkollen ski jump is one of Oslo's (maybe even Norway's) main attractions.
Now, I have to admit that coming from a neighbouring country, albeit from further south where we don't walk around with skis (or even ski suits!) in the winter time, I can't remember having heard about Holmenkollen before I moved here.
Therefore, I'm curious to hear from you guys. Have you heard of Holmenkollen?
And what do you think of when I say Oslo or Norway?

Heja Norge!
Moesring # 27. November 2008, 09:47
When I think of Oslo and Norway, I think of Year 5. A little project Moesring had to do in primary school. Working in pairs to create a little presentation about the country we were assigned. A presentation made out of pictures cut out of a holiday brochure.
There is another reason why that presentation was memorable, but it was one of those jokes that you had to be there to understand it.

Well actually, you and I grew up pretty close to each other, but I don't recall having heard of Holmenkollen...

You don't get snow in the Azores?
wickedlizard # 27. November 2008, 10:55

What do I think of when you say Oslo or Norway?
I think of Rose and Opera ... in THAT order!
Wooooo! You'd think I was Sucking up and in need of a favor.

Carlos - Wow, me before Opera
You're absolutely right - Neutrogena comes from Norway, as does one branch of vikings (namely the ones that really discovered America

I think Norway features in the film 'Cool Runnings'.
Hey! where my ganja man?
rose-marie # 28. November 2008, 09:04
-20F is -28.888888C, but it's pretty close
I haven't seen Cool runnings, but it could very well be the -94 winter olympics in Norway they were training for

Suddenly I was reminded about Australia's first ever gold medal in the winter olympics, where Steven Bradbury won the 1000m short track (skating) because everybody else fell

As an Australian, I know I'm supposed to say, "Oh, yes, Bradbury was a winner", etc. But - yes - he only won because the others fell over! Of course, he was an Olympic-level athlete, but all the hoopla and treating him like a champion in Australia was - as far as I'm concerned - ridiculous. He was coming last until everyone else took a tumble ... !
There ... I've said it. Now I can only sit back and wait for the inevitable ... Kevin Rudd kicking down my door ...

David - I don't know who Kevin Rudd is, but I don't think you are alone in thinking that. I know the olympics is all about "the important thing is not winning, but participating" but hey - a gold medal is a gold medal
Cois - It's a refrigerator way up on the map
