...really!

Holmenkollen falling

,

Yesterday I saw one of the first signs that winter season is upon us here in the north.
Yes, I have seen snow earlier this year, but yesterday I saw a man dressed in his ski suit.
A bit odd perhaps, considering there isn't any snow in the city but then - prepared tracks are only a subway ride away.
Norwegians claim to be born with skis on their feet, so people with skis are a quite common sight during the winter months. Needless to say, people around here are quite fond of winter and winter sports. And they are proud of their accomplishments in the latter.

The sight of ski-man got me thinking about a debate that went on here a while ago.
Due to not meeting the standards for arranging the 2011 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, it was decided that Holmenkollen ski jump in Oslo should be demolished and replaced with a new up-to-date construction.
Because of its history and tradition - the tower has been around since 1939 - many people thought it was horrendous to demolish it while others happily embraced a new and improved ski jump.
Well, history and tradition had to bend this time, and demolishment started last month.

One of the reasons those opposed to a new ski jump used, were that Holmenkollen ski jump is one of Oslo's (maybe even Norway's) main attractions.
Now, I have to admit that coming from a neighbouring country, albeit from further south where we don't walk around with skis (or even ski suits!) in the winter time, I can't remember having heard about Holmenkollen before I moved here.
Therefore, I'm curious to hear from you guys. Have you heard of Holmenkollen?
And what do you think of when I say Oslo or Norway?

I have heard of Holmenkollen, but perhaps it's someone further away you want to reply to this. When I think of Norway I think of snow and men with funny hats. :D

Heja Norge!

Moesring 27. November 2008, 09:47

I hadn't heard of Holmenkollen before, but I'm not exactly the winter-sports type... or any sports really, except the "Minstrels-eating" sport. P:

When I think of Oslo and Norway, I think of Year 5. A little project Moesring had to do in primary school. Working in pairs to create a little presentation about the country we were assigned. A presentation made out of pictures cut out of a holiday brochure. Moesring was told to make a presentation about Norway.

There is another reason why that presentation was memorable, but it was one of those jokes that you had to be there to understand it. awww

rose-marie 27. November 2008, 09:47

 Oh yes - they are everywhere, aren't they?

Well actually, you and I grew up pretty close to each other, but I don't recall having heard of Holmenkollen... :sherlock:

rose-marie 27. November 2008, 09:49

Moe - That sounds like a fun project. I bet that brochure was full of pictures of mountains and fjords :D.

wickedlizard 27. November 2008, 09:56

Never heard of it either... :left: But neighbor surely knows it as she's Norwegian! :D

rose-marie 27. November 2008, 10:16

Oh, she must know it then. I don't think there is a single Norwegian person who don't know what Holmenkollen is.

You don't get snow in the Azores? :left:

wickedlizard 27. November 2008, 10:55

Snow only at the top of Pico which can happen anytime of the year except summer, it is very rare to see snow up there, but it has happened... this is the highest mountain in Portugal, by the way, which is the island (the island itself is basically the whole mountain coming out of the sea, this is the island next to ours. They have jokingly talked about skiing up there... but I think it is impossible. The mountain is pure rock and boulders and extremely
dangerous, I would think.

rose-marie 27. November 2008, 11:26

:eyes: That does sound dangerous indeed!

Cois 27. November 2008, 18:09

I have never heard of it :left: p:

Suntana 28. November 2008, 01:25

Have never heard of Holmenkollen. But, I don't exactly follow Winter Sports anywhere near the same level as Non-Winter Sports. Interestingly enough, I just finished watching the NFL Football Dallas Cowboys beat the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks' Coach is named Mike Holmgren. THAT's what came to mind when I first read "Holmenkollen.

What do I think of when you say Oslo or Norway?
I think of Rose and Opera ... in THAT order! :D
Wooooo! You'd think I was Sucking up and in need of a favor. p: Nah, I don't. Seriously, that's the 2 things that first pop into my mind. Let's see, I'm NOT sure, but I THINK Neutrogena makes some Hand Creme / Lotion called Norwegian something or other. Don't Vikings come from that area? Damn! I forgot my geography.

rose-marie 28. November 2008, 08:04

Cois - you've never heard of Norway? :eyes: p:

Carlos - Wow, me before Opera :o:!
You're absolutely right - Neutrogena comes from Norway, as does one branch of vikings (namely the ones that really discovered America :D). Sweden and Denmark had vikings too though. If I my memory isn't way off, the Swedes ventured east, while the Norwegians and Danes went west.

qlue 28. November 2008, 08:21

Didn't 007 fight some guy with metal teeth somewhere in Norway? I also recall a line from a book that talks about it being minus twenty degrees. Apparently, minus twenty celcius and minus twenty farenheid is the same temperature. :left:.
I think Norway features in the film 'Cool Runnings'.
Hey! where my ganja man?

rose-marie 28. November 2008, 09:04

Jaws was in Norway? I don't remember that, but you could be right...
-20F is -28.888888C, but it's pretty close p:.
I haven't seen Cool runnings, but it could very well be the -94 winter olympics in Norway they were training for :D.

clean 28. November 2008, 11:36

I haven't heard of Holmenkollen (until now). And when I hear Norway I think Norse Mythology ...

rose-marie 28. November 2008, 14:38

You know Zaphira has a great series in her blog about Norse mythology . It's very interesting. I had forgotten most about it :left:.

Suddenly I was reminded about Australia's first ever gold medal in the winter olympics, where Steven Bradbury won the 1000m short track (skating) because everybody else fell .

Zaphira 28. November 2008, 14:46

I'm glad I could refresh your memory.

(Link to the series here if anyone should be interested).

rose-marie 28. November 2008, 15:42

Homer: Doh! Thanks for linking. I forgot.

Dacotah 28. November 2008, 20:11

First I have heard of it.

clean 29. November 2008, 01:20

I remember Ms Z's series ... fascinated by it, too!

As an Australian, I know I'm supposed to say, "Oh, yes, Bradbury was a winner", etc. But - yes - he only won because the others fell over! Of course, he was an Olympic-level athlete, but all the hoopla and treating him like a champion in Australia was - as far as I'm concerned - ridiculous. He was coming last until everyone else took a tumble ... !

There ... I've said it. Now I can only sit back and wait for the inevitable ... Kevin Rudd kicking down my door ... :eyes:

Cois 29. November 2008, 08:37

What is this Norway you speak about?

rose-marie 29. November 2008, 11:35

Carol - I'm not surprised p:.

David - I don't know who Kevin Rudd is, but I don't think you are alone in thinking that. I know the olympics is all about "the important thing is not winning, but participating" but hey - a gold medal is a gold medal .

Cois - It's a refrigerator way up on the map :D.

Dacotah 29. November 2008, 14:52

p: :D

theoddbod 29. November 2008, 16:14

Shouldn't there be snow around that thing? :eyes:

rose-marie 29. November 2008, 16:15

Yes, but I took that picture a couple of years ago during summer. Thankfully, we don't have snow all the time p:.

Dacotah 29. November 2008, 19:48

I saw on tv the other day about skiiers training in the summertime. I tried to find a video of it but couldn't. I found this though.
http://www.skiracing.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5484&Itemid=35
Shows skiiers going down without snow. :yikes: :D

clean 30. November 2008, 00:57

Kevin Rudd's our PM ("I'm Kevin, I'm from Queensland, and I'm here to help" )

rose-marie 30. November 2008, 12:31

Carol - Scary looking activity, whether there's snow or not :D. They use the olympic ski jump arena in Lillehammer for practise in the summertime (without snow). Draws some tourists.

David - Ah, thanks for explaining. Do I sense a little irony?

clean 30. November 2008, 12:59

theoddbod 30. November 2008, 13:10

I sense a tweaked Ronald Reagan quote p:

clean 30. November 2008, 13:17

Is that where it came from? He's actualy said that ... I had no idea it wasn't original! :eyes:

theoddbod 30. November 2008, 13:21

The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'

rose-marie 30. November 2008, 17:17

He was lucky "I'm" doesn't count as two words... :left:

clean 30. November 2008, 22:24

Hmm ... but, surely ... those words coming from this face couldn't be anything bad ... could they ... ?

theoddbod 30. November 2008, 23:37

Well, the face says "Look at all the commoners! Let's tell them how to run their lives".
How's that 'completely-filtered internet' for everyone coming along?

Dacotah 1. December 2008, 01:47

:D

rose-marie 1. December 2008, 07:39

He definitely looks like somebody I wouldn't buy a car from! But then - so do most politicians, I suppose p:.

What a cute new avatar, Carol .

Dacotah 1. December 2008, 10:40

Thank you Rose-Marie

clean 2. December 2008, 00:05

 He's obviously a Star Trek fan who can't do the Vulcan greeting.

rose-marie 2. December 2008, 08:18

Looks like he's doing the lobster, with a little finger twitch, instead :spock:

clean 2. December 2008, 10:42

Ruddy Ruddy Ruddy Ruddy Rudd!

rose-marie 2. December 2008, 11:34

 Dirty!
