Western harbour views

,

Whenever I visit my old hometown, I like to stroll around Västra Hamnen (The Western Harbour).
Back in the days when I lived in this city, there was nothing here. Or rather, there were no houses. Then, in 2001, the European Housing Exhibition (Bo01) was hosted here, and the first steps towards building a new residential area by the sea had begun.
Now, there's a promenade running along the seafront and some restaurants and cafés, living up the place even more. Perhaps too much, some of the residents would say. It isn't funny having hords of people sunbathing right under your balcony, I suppose...

Did I mention the sea? See, the brilliant thing with Västra Hamnen is that it's situated right by the seafront, yet it only takes few minutes to pedal yourself to the thickest city center.
I guess if I ever move back (and honestly - this easter was the first time ever I thought the thought) this is the area I'd love to live in :D.

Also situated in Västra Hamnen, is Europe's second tallest residental building, Turning Torso. It rises 190 metres (263 feet), has 54 stories and 147 apartments.
I could see myself living in the top cube, but I would hate it if the elevators suddenly wouldn't work!

I guess I don't have to worry about that, though. These apartments are luxurious, and the rents according to that. On the plus side, external window cleaning is included in the rent .

It's not only the sea and city center that is easy accesible. From Västra Hamnen, you can see over to Denmark on a clear day. If you walk for a few minutes to the central station and get on a train, you can set foot on Copenhagen Central Station half an hour later .
See the bridge in the background? That's the Öresund bridge that connects Sweden and Denmark and makes that swift travel across the sea easy.
*sighs* Maybe one day...

Very cool looking building!
As for living next to the water, there's is nothing better than waking up in the morning and seeing the sun reflecting off the water.
Makes you aware of the grandeur of it all!

And what on earth would you want to go to Denmark for anyway?

The Dark Furie 22. April 2009, 16:43

I see Godzilla's been twisting your buildings too. :left:

I think I know the answer to that question.

I love the dark blue colour of the sky on the first picture. It's cool when the sky looks like that.

Moesring 22. April 2009, 17:26

That twisted building looks really

I expected to see more cookies on the bridge to Catfiania. awww

Carol 22. April 2009, 17:40

Oh my what a building, interesting.
Yes, I see the bridge, know how you feel about bridges Rose-Marie.
*Wishing to meet you and Zaphira.*
*Wishing to meet all my online friends*

Kitty 22. April 2009, 17:44

Awww, that's sweet, Carol!

Carol 22. April 2009, 17:46

Thanks Zaphira, been wishing that for over a year.

r♡se 22. April 2009, 18:37

Phantom - Yeah... I can imagine the look. Just as long as there aren't skinny dippers right outside the window! p:
Copenhagen has a) cool shops and b) cool people .

Mik - Do you have something similar? When I first heard about Turning Torso being built, I thought it was absurd. When I saw it ready, I thought it turned out pretty cool. :D

Zap - I think you're right! flirt
It was a lovely day, but a tad too hazy to be able to see all the way over the strait.

Moe - I waited for cookies to be brought over too. awww
p:

Carol - You might get pretty dizzy standing at the entrance to the building looking up. I'd like to go to the top floor and see what it's like once :D.
Oh, meeting up would be so much fun!

I'll find out about that this summer!

r♡se 22. April 2009, 18:52

Oooh, you're going there? Coolio! :D
When will you be there?

Carol 22. April 2009, 19:18

Rose-Marie, I know I would be dizzy looking up. I looked up from the sidewalk as a kid at this building and it looked as if it was falling on me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IDS_Tower
Oh my, it has a 105 foot tall waterfall, wish I could of seen that:

Darn, trying to find a photo of it and can not find one.
I tried here: http://www.glasssteelandstone.com/BuildingDetail/411.php
thinking it would but no.
Yes it would be fun to meet, we could go shoe shopping since I only have a few pair of shoes. :D

Kitty 22. April 2009, 19:22

Whoa Phantom, really. Didn't you see all of the airport last time you were here?

@ Rose ~ Damn, and I stood there, waving for you! awww

r♡se 22. April 2009, 19:36

Carol - I can imagine the dizziness there!
Thanks for the links! Those secret floors seem... interesting... :eyes:

Zap - I'll be sure to look closer next time .

Darko 22. April 2009, 19:47

As you `ve said Rose, it would be nice to go on top of it and look around  On a clear sunny day :D

r♡se 22. April 2009, 19:53

Yes! There are apartments in the top cube, but I think they have some meeting rooms up there too .
Due to the fact that it's a residential building, the public doesn't have access to the building.

Darko 22. April 2009, 20:14

There is always a way :left: :bandit:

Carol 22. April 2009, 20:27

You are welcome Rose-Marie.

r♡se 22. April 2009, 20:52

 Darko! I suddenly got an image of you, dressed up as a fly, climbing up on the side of the building!

Jen 23. April 2009, 00:20

Wow. I would love to lay on the ground and look up at that. Call me strange, but it's a cool feeling... Well to me.

Angeliki 23. April 2009, 06:06

thanks for sharing Rose Marie!
great pictures too!
I'm glad to see the "Bridge of Friendship" (that's the translation of "Öresund bridge" ) no? p:

r♡se 23. April 2009, 06:25

Jen - it was quite dizzyfying to just stand right next to it and look up. It is a cool feeling . At least for a small amount of time, or until your neck starts hurting p:.

Ellin - Thank you .
"Bridge of Friendship" - I love that name!

Darko 23. April 2009, 07:52

r♡se 23. April 2009, 09:32

Kimmie 23. April 2009, 09:52

That building is seriously awesome :eyes:

r♡se 23. April 2009, 10:49

It is :D.

Back in the days, there was another distinct landmark in almost the same place, called Kockumskranen (the Kockums crane) which was sold to Korea a few years ago. When they removed that, the city needed something new, and voilá - Turning Torso :D.

Peter 23. April 2009, 11:52

Nicely shot Rose.

r♡se 23. April 2009, 14:10

Thank you Peter :D

Kimmie 23. April 2009, 15:41

Holy crap that's one massive crane! I've never seen anything like it in my life :eyes:

r♡se 23. April 2009, 15:52

Yeah... It was the pride of Malmö once.

The last thing it was used for was lifting the foundations to the Öresunds bridge :D.

Kimmie 23. April 2009, 16:45

My country's stupid and boring

Stomyr 23. April 2009, 17:44

:cool::up:

r♡se 23. April 2009, 19:15

That's not true, Kimmie... You have loads of cool stuff! Like that gherkin posted at Mart's blog, I think p:

Thanks Stomyr :D.

dɹɐzılpǝkɔıw ɐʞɐ ɹǝɥgɐllɐg lǝbɐsı 23. April 2009, 20:24

There's amazing places in England! I know!!! I've seen them!

Cool bridge! :D

Kimmie 23. April 2009, 20:51

Gherkin?? :yikes:  . Nah Rose, we gots nothing major landmarky, unique and cool. Let's see, we got a big clock, an oversized ferris wheel... *falls asleep*

Moesring 23. April 2009, 20:54

How could you forget about the tacky imitation of the Statue of Liberty?
I don't know about unique and cool, but you certainly won't see one anywhere else. :D

r♡se 24. April 2009, 07:49

Yeah, I've grown to like it myself, Issy :D.

 Wake up Kimmie! At least your sights are known all over the world... p:
:sst: Gherkin

Moe - Except perhaps in Las Vegas... :left:

Kimmie 24. April 2009, 09:04

Ohhh! Homer: Doh! thanks for the link  . Moe, there are dozens of tacky imitations of lady liberty all over the world :yuck:

r♡se 24. April 2009, 10:57

Hmm... I've given it some more thought and I can't really come up with a single world famous Swedish tourist attraction... awww

Kitty 24. April 2009, 11:02

The only thing I can think of is Globen, but maybe I just know it because I live where I live. :left:

Cois 24. April 2009, 11:04

*points* buuuuuuuildiiiiing... . . . Coooooool

r♡se 24. April 2009, 11:14

I didn't think about Globen. I'm not sure if it's known outside Scandinavia either though...

I agree, Cois :D

Moesring 24. April 2009, 13:24

Moe, there are dozens of tacky imitations of lady liberty all over the world :yuck:

But none of the others are quite as __________ as yours, are they? P:

:sst: I'll let you fill in the missing word.

Peter 24. April 2009, 13:58

Rose. your King and Queen just visited the tulip gardens in Amsterdam. :D

The Dark Furie 24. April 2009, 14:40

Swedish meatballs are famous? :left:

Gavin Sheedy 24. April 2009, 15:15

I was in Malmö last year, I loved it. It's a perfectly walkable city. I had the idea that Swedish cities would be fairly uniform, but Malmö is very different to Göteborg. I'd love to live there for a while.

Östersunds Bridge, those stone-age engravings somewhere up North; Sweden has stuff.

England has stone henge, St. Paul's Cathedral, the Underground, Tom Baker... what more do you need :D ?

r♡se 24. April 2009, 15:26

Peter - I'd be careful if I were you! In some cultures that might be considere an act of war! :eyes:

Mik - Yes, but you hardly go to Sweden just to experience them... p:

Gavin - Were you there as a tourist? I think Malmö and Göteborg are different too, but I do like Göteborg a lot :D. Haven't been there for a couple of years now...
:sst: Who, or what, is Tom Baker?

The Dark Furie 24. April 2009, 15:56

Tom Baker was the fourth Dr Who. Many people erroneously called him the best. I was a Sylvester McCoy fan myself until David Tennant blew everyone else out the water with his portrayal.

r♡se 24. April 2009, 16:00

Was that him with the multi coloured scarf? That's the only doctor I remember :o:.
I loved the opening music though
