...really!

Shoes on a string

,

Yesterday, while taking a walk in the neigbourhood, I saw something I've only seen in American movies before... I remember hearing that shoes hung up like this means there is some drug activity nearby, but could that really be true in this case?
I've seen 3-4 places with shoes in a couple of different streets, so I'm thinking it's either:
a) art
b) bullying
c) somebody getting rid of their shoes (but that doesn't add up... I mean who would want to do that :insane:?)
And what's the difference between one and two pairs hanging there?
I'd love to hear your ideas.
:D

Yeah they did this all the time in california, were i use to live at. Well it used to be for drugs, but the police caught up with it so it ended. Now it is mostly bullying, mostly gang members would take off the other person shoes and through them up ther, so that they had to walk home bare foot. :frown:

r♡se 24. May 2009, 17:10

Hm. I just find it pretty hard to believe that it should be either drug or gang related. We don't have many gangs here, and the drug activity is concentrated to further down the city centre...

Peter 24. May 2009, 17:14

How about adolescence prank.:irked:

r♡se 24. May 2009, 17:17

Hey Peter. That crossed my mind too... Those power lines are pretty high up though, so it can't have been a very young person throwing them.

The Dark Furie 24. May 2009, 17:24

Some kids did that round here recently. I thought for a second you'd been stalking us. :insane:

r♡se 24. May 2009, 17:30

Hm? Stalking? Me? You? Never! Honest... :left:

Kitty 24. May 2009, 17:43

Hmmm, that looks just weird. I have never neither heard of it, nor seen it.

My guess would be bullying!

r♡se 24. May 2009, 17:52

I found a wiki entry, but I didn't get any smarter.

Still - what a waste of shoes! awww

Peter 24. May 2009, 17:54

We don't have any of those problems here in Holland because all power and telephone lines are underground. We only have high tension power grid above land or water. Last year a Apache attack helicopter managed to clip one with his rotor. Thats like slamming into a tree in the Sahara desert.

Kitty 24. May 2009, 17:55

I didn't get any wiser either. The big question that remains is why? :left:

Moesring 24. May 2009, 18:01

I'd guess bullying - it seems to be the most likely explanation for it.

r♡se 24. May 2009, 18:14

Peter - Hah! What are the odds? :eyes:

Zap - I guess we'll never know. awww

Moe - Maybe. I found a Norewgian article on this exact subject now. It seems there are more places like this - all of them scattered around the western part of the city.
Advanced bullying? Or perhaps an artsy installation? Maybe, in time, the answer will be revealed.

Kitty 24. May 2009, 18:16

You know what?

I threw out a pair of boots today! :yikes:

r♡se 24. May 2009, 18:18

 Poor boots! But I'm sure they served their time well...

r♡se 24. May 2009, 18:19

Oh, and poor you too! p:

Darko 24. May 2009, 18:49

Rose, admit it was part of your artistic attempt

Kitty 24. May 2009, 19:12

Yes, they did serve me well indeed - but I went through a lot of stuff, and I hadn't used them one single time this winter, so I decided that they had to go. awww

I'll buy some new ones when autumn arrives.

The Dark Furie 24. May 2009, 19:15

Women.

Kitty 24. May 2009, 19:17

Yeah, we're good at it, right?

r♡se 24. May 2009, 19:25

Darko - I would never throw away my sneakers like that!

Zap - That sounds like a good idea
I threw out a pair of sandals earlier this week so... :D

Kimmie 24. May 2009, 20:54

Hmmm. Wouldn't be surprised if it was drug activity here - place is swarming with dealers and addicts  . I do wonder if they (yours and ours) mean anything in particular, though :sherlock:

Peter 24. May 2009, 21:11

What is the point in hiding drugs in plain site?

Gavin Sheedy 24. May 2009, 21:16

Used to see this all of the time in Dublin. I hadn't thought about not seeing it here 'till now. I've seen telephones up there too. Bird sanctuaries?

Carol 25. May 2009, 04:07

I've never heard of it or seen it.
Odd.

Cois 25. May 2009, 06:17

We did that as kids.. Normally old tattered sneakers or sometimes just mismatched shoes with laces tied so as to be able to wrap around the wires..
No drug activity or and of that crap just teens being teens.. Of course graffiti was a popular pastime so it can probably considered as good old fashioned vandalism  :left:. Uhm.. I mean.. awww

r♡se 25. May 2009, 08:02

Kimmie - I guess we have start saying "da hood" now... awww

Peter - I don't think they hide the drugs - it's more a signal that there is dealing going on nearby.

Gavin - Have you seen it in Gothenburg too?
 Poor birds! Having to eat sweaty bird seeds...

Carol - Yes, it is odd. I wonder how long they'll hang there. Will have to keep my eyes open!

Cois - It was you? :eyes:
Well, I prefer this kind of vandalism to bullying and drug dealing any time. :D

Carol 25. May 2009, 09:54

:D

Kimmie 25. May 2009, 10:11

But I don't wanna be a gangsta

Gavin Sheedy 25. May 2009, 10:25

Spaggyj, with that hard woman avatar, it is inevitable :D

No, just Dublin. There was a telephone hanging from one telephone wire (criticism of our terrible at the time state monopoly telephone company?) for years and years. Could still be there for all I know.

Kimmie 25. May 2009, 10:54

 but I don't wanna put a cap in somebody's ass

r♡se 25. May 2009, 11:38

  I just got that vision of you, sneaking around your town shooting at people wearing green!

Gavin - A telephone hanging from a phone wire? That's damn funny, actually!

I'm not sure I'm liking the placing of the user names now... :left:

The Dark Furie 25. May 2009, 11:51

You've seen the news reports then Rose? :left:

Kimmie 25. May 2009, 11:56

 , and I don't much like the layout either... I think it'll grow on us though... I do like that I can see a big picture of you just a couple of inches away from the text box flirt

r♡se 25. May 2009, 12:08

No Mik. It's not like I'm stalking you or anything like that... :right:

You can see a picture of me Kimsiewoo? :left:
I must try it out on the mini later.
You're right - it will grow on us but for now, I miss the status under the member pic, the location of the usernames and - the need to hit "Mark as read" on each and every item on my watch list :faint:

r♡se 25. May 2009, 12:09

Oh, and I don't care much for the friends link on the top either. It says I have 428 friends.

Cois 25. May 2009, 12:19

I'm ignoring them all..

The Dark Furie 25. May 2009, 12:21

I only have 209. awww Gotta stop having them banned.

r♡se 25. May 2009, 12:22

You're ignoring us awww

I just checked the friends section and oh my god - the images are huge! :eyes:

r♡se 25. May 2009, 12:22

You can have mine, Mik

Kimmie 25. May 2009, 12:56

Are all those requests, Rose, or are your mutual friends in there too? I don't wanna have to hit ignore 500 times :irked: . Yeah, your member pic is right below the comment box on Mini :D

Carol 25. May 2009, 12:58

I'm with you on that Kimmie, the could make it a bigger space between the comment posted and the comment box.
I don't care for the number of friends showing either.

Kimmie 25. May 2009, 13:00

They're not even friends, that's what's annoying me.

Cois 25. May 2009, 13:01

I've gotten it down to 63 now.. Only one of the lot is someone I forgot to add :o:

r♡se 25. May 2009, 13:02

I think those are requests only. Can't see any "real" friends in there... I don't get the point of having that on the top anyway

Kimmie 25. May 2009, 13:03

I know, it's stupid, right? *groans* I'm having to keep reloading stuff as it is with my phone's Java all weird, it won't survive me hitting ignore for every single moron that added me

The Dark Furie 25. May 2009, 13:42

I think that friend requests are now shown in that notification rather than sent to your inbox.

r♡se 25. May 2009, 13:59

*fingers crossed that you win (at least) one of the competitions*

Aha. I suppose it'll be nice not to get notified via PM anymore, but I still don't like the visibility.

Kitty 25. May 2009, 14:36

I have 234 now, and I don't need the visibility of them either. :irked:

*Goes to check other account to see how many waits there*

Peter 25. May 2009, 15:29

Who turned the light off? :drunk:

Moesring 25. May 2009, 15:53

I didn't have anything like 428 when I first logged in. Hooray for unpopularity.

I'm not seeing any actual improvements so far - just niggly little changes that mean some of us have to redesign our themes - and various CSS generators also need tweaking. :irked:

:sst: Well, actually they're trying to put the main CSS generator out of business by providing templates for changing backgrounds and top banners. awww
