...really!

Misfit

,

I never thought I'd write a post about feet :eyes: but here's a strange thing I notice every year when the temperature rises to sandal-wearing level.
People (mostly women), mostly over a certain age, squeezing their feet into footwear that's clearly too small.
Here's an example - a woman standing in front of me at the cash register in the supermarket:What is this? I can't think of anything that could explain why anybody would want to walk around like this. It can't be comfortable, and it surely doesn't look good.
Unless... it's a case of reversed footorexia (thinking that your feet are smaller then they actually are). If so, is it curable? :worried:

:eyes:
That's bad that she does that, not good for her feet.
Her toes are ontop of eachother.

garlingmatthews 10. July 2009, 15:03

 I've sometimes had to do it because of my large feet, 46. (12/12.5 in the Irish system). It's just hard to find large footwear.

rose-marie 10. July 2009, 15:05

Carol - I know! I wonder if people who wear sandals like this wear normal shoes a couple of sizes too small too... :faint:

Gavin - Oh my... what big feet you have. :o:
Is 46 a difficult size to find?

garlingmatthews 10. July 2009, 15:07

It was harder in Ireland, but it's still hard enough that if I find a comfortable pair of shoes, I buy them. Added to my vegetarianism, which excludes leather, it can be tricky

Dacotah 10. July 2009, 15:09

Almost as bad as the women that have their small toe or toes cut off so they can fit into high heels. :faint:

garlingmatthews 10. July 2009, 15:11

Ow!

Spaggyj 10. July 2009, 15:49

Oh no, that's just awful :yuck: . On another note - very good espionage photography

rose-marie 10. July 2009, 15:53

Gavin - It must suck not finding shoes easily awww

Carol - Oh no! You must be pretty desperate to do that... Made me think of the old Chinese tradition where they tied up girls' feet to prevent them from growing :frown:.

Thanks Kimmie, I don't think anybody noticed

Zaphira 10. July 2009, 15:53

I'll join the choir, that's damn ugly! :yuck:

garlingmatthews 10. July 2009, 15:56

Mm, but it also means that I can walk for a very long time before my feet start killing me

Spaggyj 10. July 2009, 15:58

On the note of ancient Chinese tradition - they'd often smash the toes too, often with a large rock or stone. :insane:

garlingmatthews 10. July 2009, 16:05

...!

rose-marie 10. July 2009, 16:52

Zap - Yes! Have you noticed it too, or is it just here people have developed reversed footorexia?

Gavin - I don't get the connection between not finding shoes easy and being able to walk long

Kimmie - OUCH! :yikes: I haven't heard about that before.

gdare 10. July 2009, 16:53

I have 45 but never had too much problems of finding shoes - I guess a lot of people ar e tall here and has big feet.
But this is :yuck:
In old Japan (also in China), it was noble and sexy for women to have small feet so it was usual, in rich families, to put kid`s feet in small wooden shoes, more like boxes in order to preserve their feet from growing :insane:

garlingmatthews 10. July 2009, 16:58

Sorry, I wrote that badly; I meant that having large feet meant that I'm a good long distance walker. Um bad joke. Although I am

There are a lot of traditions like this; a friend of mine visited a museum in, I think, Thailand, dedicated to different ways in which we mutilated ourselves for beauty, from one tribe where the men remove the enamel from their teeth with a stone, to one culture where they insert silicon into their breasts... we are a weird species.

gdare 10. July 2009, 17:04

Spaggyj 10. July 2009, 17:29

The things we do in the name of vanity, eh? Nothing changes

Furie 10. July 2009, 17:42

Sandals? I'll get the gun.

Dacotah 10. July 2009, 17:43

Rose-Marie
Oh my, poor girls.

Zaphira 10. July 2009, 18:25

I've seen it too, and I've also seen people mocking their feet into shoes at least one size too small - also pumps, where you can see how the toes are squished! :yikes:

For heaven's sake, buy some good shoes that fits! Your feet will thank you for it!

rose-marie 10. July 2009, 22:13

Darko - so... you're Bigfoot? :D

Gavin - Nice examples! And very true, too!

Kimmie - True that. Either way it's mutilation and in a weird way considered beautiful. Well, by some people anyway.

Mik - Not a big sandal fan then? :left: p:

Carol - Yes, poor girls. Isn't it interesting how it's often the girls that have to suffer in the name of beauty - all over the world?

Zap - Oh, that's awful! I don't understand how they can bear walking around like that! :faint:

*reads "buy some good shoes"* :hat:

Dacotah 10. July 2009, 22:39

Sad, that's for sure.

clean 10. July 2009, 22:48

Many, many years ago, back when I did kung fu (did I mention it was many years ago  ), the only shoes I could find for training (locally, at least) were slightly too small underneath like that (i.e., smaller than my foot).

In that instance, though, it was quite helpful from a balance perspective, strangely enough. I learned better balance because of it (if that makes sense).

And the tightness of the shoes themselves kept my toes together for kicking (think a front thrust kick), so I didn't have to bother (though I did, because that was what we were supposed to do).

But for wearing out every day, shoes must must be comfortable.

I hope you're wearing comfortable shoes, Ms Rosie!

* walks off chanting 'comfort first, comfort first' *

Imagine ... all over the world there's guys walking around with cold knees because their socks don't go high enough ...

I don't know about other countries, but we had teachers who'd dress like that over here. Pretty-much the standard for male teachers, summer or winter ...
