zend programming apache development php ide
I have been using Zend Studio for all my development needs for the last year or so, I have used J-Edit as well because it runs great on Sun Solaris - but I don't use that vitual machine enough to switch to using J-Edit full time.
I actually got the built-in CVS functions working in the Zend Studio editor, now I have to re-configure my web server to handle the different repositories.
I am so all over the place with project ideas and different levels for each project that have a working CVS will allow me to keep track of comments and project status much better now.
I have a gmail/google web page where I have been keeping my best apache configuration tricks and most of my programming stuff, I will see if I can migrate that stuff to here - Or add a feed to my opera pages when I figure it out.

Wow, it's been a whole year since I posted anything (again).
Well, I got a little better with programming this year.
I started using cakephp which is probably the best php framework around. Even just reading the core code for the framework is great learning. I also started using the yahoo developer user interface kit (yui) - it's a great css layout template. All this mixed with prototype javascript tools makes for some really nice web apps.
Im still not making any much money with the freelance thing, but I figure what the hell, at least I'm keeping busy till i get my disability battle won (ain't the govt great? - Vote Kucinich)

weather power company
Just like last year we got hit with a nasty wind storm, only this time we went 6 days without power. It wasn't quite as cold as last year, which helped; and we had many more people to hang out with this time around.

I don't know how some of those guys do it. I mean developers. I have a folder full of project and blog ideas, but I am always so busy working on other peoples projects (I gotta pay the bills) that I never have enough time for my own projects, let alone enough time to blog about them.
Then I find all these other developer blogs that are just crammed full of cool projects and testing this that and the other - do these guys have a special alogorythym to put 36 hours in a day or something.
This years seems to be off to a roller coaster start, but hopefully it will steady itself and things will be fairly smooth for a while.

Living in the northwest has it's advantages. Living near the coast has it's advantages.
Until some wicked winter storms kicks your ass.
We went without power for 3 days dec-14th/dec-17th. It probably wouldn't have been too bad, but we got hammered with a nasty cold front behind the windstorm with 80-100mph winds (We actually broke a wind speed record at 119mph).
Being a freelancer is cool too, if you happen to be really good. OK, well I am really good but I have only been doing freelance work for a couple years so I haven't quite built a steady clientelle yet.
With x-mas right around the corner, it wasn't going to be quite in the budget to leave town and find a Hotel so we just bundled up and toughed it out.
Our kids have a good friend whose family had a fireplace, so we let the kids go hang out over there for a few days so they could stay warm.
We toughed it out through the cold with a borrowes cole-man stove. As long as we had hot coffee we seemed to be OK, although the cold wreaked havok on the three blown discs in my back. My wife's fibromyalgia wasn't too happy about it either.
Well we've had power and heat for a few days now so we are recovering. During all the power company shenanigans in the last few days we have had a ton of surges - the one this morning was so bad it fried our UPS, and wifey's machine is having problems. Time to fight the power company, that's always fun.
Until next time - maybe I'll have some updates about more projects later. I finished a project last week involving automated price-updates on a timer with ajax - and have a new CMS based on cakePHP.
The guy that I did the automated price update script offered me a job working on some internet marketing web sites he has, so maybe my freelance career is going to pay off.

wow, what a friggin project. I hate building community web-sites. But this project is almost done now - Whew !!!
I got yahoo maps and geocode search by distance stuff working though - that was interesting learning.
Now that I am done with project - i can tinker with yahoo maps a little more. I really like the idea of spatial fields in mysql 4.1 as well - makes for distance searching faster - but not all hosting providers are running mysql 4.1 yet.
I have seen an increasing number of providers upgrading their mysql to mysql 4.1 and even 5.0, so hopefully, those of us that do use spatial fields in mysql will have better access.
Thats all for now - i gotta shut down and test some other hard-drives.

While scouring the web for information I got a little sidetracked and found this.

IT has been quite awhile since I've been here. Well, I have been really hammered with this stupid real-estate project. I have been using smarty (its an extension of php) a lot for new projects and I am definitely getting better building templates.
I really want to get around to building some widgets, but I have to get this real-estate project finished - yuck.
As far as the rest of life goes, we became involved with the Lost Experience arg again, my wife made a parody site, its pretty funny -

OK, I have a new project coming up - so I have to let my playtime with the LOST EXPERIENCE ARG go for awhile. I will have to rely on my wife keeping up for me.
My new project is some type of real-estate news letter service - BORING. OH well, gotta pay for this stinking DSL somehow. This project pays pretty good - hopefully I can upgrade to a cable connection (way faster than DSL)
I really need to get a new computer too - this one I have is OK, but I need a dedicated server. Who would have guessed that an old carpenter is going to get a server.
