Wow, it's been a whole year since I posted anything (again).
Well, I got a little better with programming this year.
I started using cakephp which is probably the best php framework around. Even just reading the core code for the framework is great learning. I also started using the yahoo developer user interface kit (yui) - it's a great css layout template. All this mixed with prototype javascript tools makes for some really nice web apps.
Im still not making any much money with the freelance thing, but I figure what the hell, at least I'm keeping busy till i get my disability battle won (ain't the govt great? - Vote Kucinich)

Living in the northwest has it's advantages. Living near the coast has it's advantages.
Until some wicked winter storms kicks your ass.
We went without power for 3 days dec-14th/dec-17th. It probably wouldn't have been too bad, but we got hammered with a nasty cold front behind the windstorm with 80-100mph winds (We actually broke a wind speed record at 119mph).
Being a freelancer is cool too, if you happen to be really good. OK, well I am really good but I have only been doing freelance work for a couple years so I haven't quite built a steady clientelle yet.
With x-mas right around the corner, it wasn't going to be quite in the budget to leave town and find a Hotel so we just bundled up and toughed it out.
Our kids have a good friend whose family had a fireplace, so we let the kids go hang out over there for a few days so they could stay warm.
We toughed it out through the cold with a borrowes cole-man stove. As long as we had hot coffee we seemed to be OK, although the cold wreaked havok on the three blown discs in my back. My wife's fibromyalgia wasn't too happy about it either.
Well we've had power and heat for a few days now so we are recovering. During all the power company shenanigans in the last few days we have had a ton of surges - the one this morning was so bad it fried our UPS, and wifey's machine is having problems. Time to fight the power company, that's always fun.
Until next time - maybe I'll have some updates about more projects later. I finished a project last week involving automated price-updates on a timer with ajax - and have a new CMS based on cakePHP.
The guy that I did the automated price update script offered me a job working on some internet marketing web sites he has, so maybe my freelance career is going to pay off.

Well, we just moved. Originally we were going to relax after getting the boxes in, but I stumbled into this database project with a friend of mine. All of my time has been "sucked" into a huge project that took way longe than I wanted it to.
Now that my friend and I have submitted our final draft of the project, there shouldnt be much left to do except minimal changes here and there. I am really glad this project is coming to an end.
I really want to enjoy a little more time with my family.
I like the fact that I completed something, but I have a ton of my own projects to work on. That, and I havent done anything productive with my wife or kids for about a month now.
