Opera Tokyo Meet

, , ,

We had an Opera users meeting at jp.opera yesterday. Including Opera employees, we could count the people gathered almost 30. That's very enjoyable meeting, talking to each other who only met on the web, on the irc, bbs, this time we meet face to face in a small room. I think it is very important especially in the time of web. Because people sometimes, or often, have to judge/think of others, only from what they have typed into the lines of blog/comments or so. In the case of face to face meetings, we have much more informations, to know what they think.

I put some photographs at Photos of this blog, and some put short small movies on YouTube, the first part of Jon's message over skype movie and the cuttings of Opera cake!, so you can imagine what's going on there.

Yes, Jon himself kindly took time for us, so all of the attendance appreciated very much. It was Saturday morning out there for him, he spared time in front of the camera of skype, for 90 miniutes!

That meetings were taken place at Tokyo office of Opera, started at three thirty in the afternoon, and most of them drink at Japanese bar till late in the evening, almost to midnight, some of them continued to talk and drink till the first trains started to move in the early morning!

Third article, Jon!

,

I think I have to mention this third article in the series, the interview to Jon himself.
"Opera was for Geeks, from birth", by ASCII Japan, in two pages.

Here is a short summary of it. (The translation is mine, so beware it's not very accurate.)
What's the concept of Opera? - We focused on 'users'. We like to deliver the best browsing environments to any devices, on PC, on Mobile, 'For Users', that's Opera's concept.

To attain this goal, what's related to the company in northern Europe? - Our country is very small, first of all. We have to look for the globe accordingly, then have to localize and fit its demands. We are in the small country, so understand the 'differences of people'.

The software based on the web-standard will be increasing in the future, and native applications will be decreasing. Because the cost for that developments are very high. Then the browser's technology becomes important. The needs of accessing to the system in the company with mobile devices are increasing, he said.

Lastly, he said, years ago, around 1992, I began to think of the development of browser. At Telonor, the project was started in 1994, at that time, only a few web sites were on the net. In this sense, Opera was for Geeks, from birth.

Oh, Jon came to Japan, we, usual Opera users didn't know that. He went to Akihabara, bought a new Digital camera with WiFi, see his photo at linked page. He uses ThinkPad, as some of you know.

In the contents, the most of them are not new to my.opera community fellows. No mentions to Nintendo browser, because Mado-no-Mori is Windows applications web site.

Some points I have to mention are;
Mado-no-Mori; There was a TP of Opera8 with BitTorrent, but the Final of Opera8 didn't have BitTorrent. Why do you implement BitTorrent to new Opera9?

Jon; Technology Preview is a test case, to implement some new features, offer to the users, to get feedback. So some features are not included for the Final Product. By that time (at Opera8's TP periods), BitTorrent had some bad image, to exchange illegal materials, so we didn't ship it with final product. But now it is widely used, including Hollywood, to deliver legal software and contents, so we decided to include it with Opera9.

Mado; What's big in next Opera?
Jon; It's too early to talk about Opera 10. But web browser is not only browsing tool for the web contents, it will become a platform, on which complicated applications work. Such a environment will become popular on PC, cellphone, devices. We, OperaASA, are working hard to offer environments, where one application work on many devices.

Mado; Last April, you tried and failed to swim to your home country. After that, did you come back there?
Jon; Yes, by airplane.
