Iranian Spy: His Release Is Unlikely

Aljazeera - 05/02/07

Iran arrests ex-nuclear official

Iranian authorities have reportedly arrested the country's former nuclear negotiator on charges of espionage.

Iranian media reported on Wednesday that Hossein Mousavian was being held on espionage charges in Tehran's Evin prison after being arrested at his house in the city.

IRNA, Iran's state-run news agency, citing an "unofficial informed source," said that Mousavian was arrested on Monday.

Mousavian was a close ally of Muhammad Khatami, the relatively moderate predecessor of Mahmoud Ahmadenejad, the current Iranian president.

'Espionage charges'

Iran has not officially released any details about the specific charges against Mousavian but the semiofficial Fars news agency - which is deemed close to the country's elite Revolutionary Guards - said Mousavian could face espionage charges.

"The probable charge of espionage activities may be raised against him," the agency quoted an unnamed official as saying.

"Mousavian was arrested because of connections and exchange of information with foreign elements."

Fars said Mousavian was summoned to the prosecutor's office on Monday, where he was arrested and taken to the notorious Evin prison in northern Tehran.

"Mousavian's case is under initial investigation and interrogation, and his release is unlikely," Fars said.

Mousavian was a member of the Iranian nuclear negotiating team until 2005 and also served as Iran's ambassador to Germany in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Iran: Government Rules Out Prisoner Swap For Seized Britons

(AKI) -- Teheran has no intention of freeing the 15 captive British sailors in exchange for the release of five officials from the Revolutionary Guard arrested in northern Iraq by US troops, Iran's deputy foreign minister said Monday.

Mehdi Mostafavi, speaking on Iranian state television, said:
The British military were arrested because they were trespassing in Iranian waters and will not to be swapped with our officials kidnapped by the Americans in Iraq.
In the meantime, the government of Baghdad has denied that the Britons arrested by the Pasdaran last Friday and transferred to Tehran for interrogation, were outside Iraqi territorial waters:

Iraqi foreign minister Hoshiyar Zebari, calling on the Islamic Republic to release them immediately, said:
The 15 Britons were operating in complete respect of international law, they were in our territorial waters carrying out controls of merchant vessels on the basis of a UN resolution.
The Iranian authorities have denied British officials in Tehran access to the navy personnel.

English writing found on bullets in Iran, officials say

Tehran, Iran -- Bullet cartridges bearing U.S. insignia and English lettering were among the weaponry seized last week from Sunni militants suspected of killing 11 members of Iran's Shiite-dominated Revolutionary Guards, Iranian officials said Sunday.

A photograph of the cartridge box, along with an array of other ammunition, was published by Iranian newspapers.

The Iranians did not provide direct access to the weapons and explosives, drawing skepticism from analysts. But Iran is worried that the United States is quietly helping Iranian opposition groups foment internal instability.

The Iranian allegations came a week after U.S. officials laid out what they said was proof of Iranian-made weaponry in Iraq. That evidence also was inconclusive, and Iran denied supplying arms to Iraqi militants.

A pentagon spokeswoman, Maj. Rebecca Goodrich Hinton, said Sunday that officials had no comment in response to the allegations from Tehran.

Assad, Ahmadinejad vow to form alliance against U.S., Israel

Iranian President Mahmoud Adhmadinejad and Syrian President Bashar Assad on Saturday vowed to form an alliance against what they called U.S. and Israeli conspiracies against the Islamic world.

Iran's ISNA news agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying that the Islamic world in general and Iran and Syria in particular should maintain their vigilance and neutralize conspiracies aimed at sowing discord among Muslims.

Ahmadinejad said that what the U.S. really aims for under the pretext of development in the region "is just another effort to strengthen its own status and that of the Zionists."

The Iranian president also praised the agreement by rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah to form a unity government. He said:
Dispute among Muslim factions has always been harmful for regional nations and useful for Islam's enemies.
ISNA quoted Assad as saying that expansion of Tehran-Damascus ties would help resolve the problems of the Islamic world. He accused the U.S. of trying to attract public opinion within the Islamic world by undermining Iran-Syria relations.

"America's policies have failed in the region ... By creating divisions among Muslim nations, Washington wants to pursue its aims," IRNA quoted Assad as saying during his meeting with Ahmadinejad, who urged "Muslim countries to preserve unity."

The Syrian leader said Muslims worldwide should be informed about "the evil aims by the U.S. and Zionists" which he said were sowing discord among Muslims.

Assad arrived earlier Saturday in Tehran for a two-day visit to discuss developments in the Middle East and was scheduled to also meet Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, former president Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani and chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani.

On the agenda would be Iraq, Lebanon and cooperation with the Palestinians. Assad was in Tehran in August 2005 immediately after the start of Ahmadinejad's presidential term.

Ahmadinejad said earlier Saturday that Lebanon and Hezbollah have his complete support in their struggle against Israel and the United States. Ahmadinejad said:
Iran and Lebanon are two parts of the same body, and only through cooperation between our two nations will it be possible to foil the conspiracies of the enemy.

Thanks to Hezbollah, the Lebanese people have become a symbol of courage, faith and respect for all nations, and all this through the power of resistance.

Russia fulfils Iran missile deal
Russia has completed a contract to sell some 30 air defence missile systems to Iran, a senior official has said.

The head of the state-run weapons exporter Rosoboronexport was quoted by Russian media as saying that delivery was completed at the end of last year.

The deal - worth $700m (£380m) and signed last year - has angered the US and Israel who say Iran may use the missiles to attack its neighbors.

Russia says its Tor-M1 system is short-range and purely defensive.

"[Russia] fully completed delivery to Iran of the Tor-M1 missile complexes at the end of December 2006," Itar-Tass news agency quoted Sergei Chemezov as saying.

Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov has previously said that because of their technical characteristics, the missiles cannot be used by terrorist groups.

Washington wants all countries to stop exporting weapons to Iran, but Russia and China strongly oppose the move.

Both countries voted for a UN resolution which bans sensitive nuclear trade with Tehran, but there are no sanctions on conventional weapons.

US dominance over Middle East spiralling downward

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tuesday that US dominance in the Middle East and the Zionist regime's bullying are spiralling downward.

In a meeting with the visiting Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem, Ahmadinejad said that the Islamic and Arab states should prepare ground for strengthening independent and broad-based governments and restore stability and security of regional states through vigilance, resistance, solidarity and cooperation.

He added that the US President George Bush's new strategy for the Middle East aims to repair the image of the US administration and the Republicans. Ahmadinejad said,
The US intends to cause insecurity and dispute and weaken independent governments in the region to continue with its dominance over the Middle East and achieve its arrogant goals.

The US and Zionist regime have a conspiracy to stir up conflict between Shia and Sunni Muslims in order to plunder wealth of the regional nations.
Ahmadinejad said that victory of Lebanon's Hizbollah was a victory for all Islamic nations over the US and the Zionist regime.
Regional countries should prepare ground to stop the Zionist regime from occupation of Palestinian territories and interference in Lebanese national affairs through support for the Islamic resistance in both Palestine and Lebanon.

Otherwise, the US and the Zionist regime will step up pressure on Islamic countries.
He praised growing trend of ties between Tehran and Damascus and said,
Powerful and advanced nations of Iran and Syria are keen on stability and security of regional states.

Regional countries should work hard for their development and progress through bolstering regional cooperation.

Expansion of strategic relations between Iran, Syria and Iraq will play an important role in establishing stability and
tranquility in the Middle East.
Al-Moualem, for his part, presented a report on the latest developments in the region and a visit by the Iraqi President Jalal Talabani to Syria.

He said Iran and Syria regard speedy restoration of stability and security in Iraq in the interest of all countries in the region, adding the US interests would be secured only by continued insecurity and insurgency in Iraq and the entire region.

The Syrian minister pointed to efforts made by the US and bullying powers to escalate tension for massacring the Muslims and cause rift between Shia and Sunni Muslims.

Al-Moualem urged regional governments to prevent massacre of Muslims and work for establishment of peace and tranquility in the region through unity and regular consultations.

He assessed as strategic Damascus's ties with Tehran and said expansion of ties between Iran and Syria would help restore stability and security in the region.

World Arrogance spiralling downward in confrontation with Iran

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday that the World Arrogance and the bullying powers will spiral downward in their confrontation with Iranian nation.

Addressing a large public gathering, he said that certain bullying powers cherish a dream that they can drive the Iranian nation out of the scene with hue and cry, but, to no avail.

President Ahmadinejad said that the Iranian nation has become further resolute in reacting to the threats of the bullying powers, a reference to UN Security Council Resolution 1737. He said:
Leaders of US and the UK are unable to respond to questions brought up by their own people and have resorted to escalating war and bloodshed in the international community to divert public opinion of their own nations from their domestic shortfalls,
He said that the US and UK governments have imposed heavy expense on their own nations by going to war.
Respect for other nations rights is the only way to salvation.

You should accept that you are subject to downfall and the way you opted for will not bring salvation to you.
On Iraq, President Ahmadinejad said:
We advised you so far to end occupation, but, you did not listen. Currently, you are entangled in quagmire and you have no way out.

You have been entrapped in Iraq and even Saddam's execution will not give you a prestige. The nations in the region are fed up with US and UK leaders.
Elsewhere, President Ahmadinejad said that Iranian enemies think that they can thwart Iran's development by resorting to resolution at the United Nations, but, Iranian children will go ahead with progress to the dismay of the US and UK.

Reading Between the Lines

,

Reading between the lines of the Iranian president's recent letter, I see an almost desperate plea to the citizens of the United States to reign in a government which has run amok -- a government being administered by megalomaniacs who regard themselves as being above the US constitution, its amendments -- or anything else, for that matter.

I'm reading more and more about US plans to launch another "pre-emptive" war, either by organizing another "coalition" or by using a foreign government as proxy -- with or without UN approval. It gets worse. The word is that this next war will entail use of small(?) nuclear weapons. And the target of this next war? Iran.

Although Iran is not in violation of any international laws, there is apprehension in some quarters that Iran might commit a violation at some point in the future.

So this is what it's come to in the USA! It's OK to punish people, to bomb people -- not for something they've done -- but for something they might do.

Fellow citizens, we don't need to guard against a totalitarian government -- it's already here. And we certainly don't need to demonize George Bush and his neocon/zionist friends -- their words and their actions have demonized themselves far better than anything we could have imagined.

The question (rhetorical or otherwise) is "What are we going to do about it?" And please, spare me the "going to the polls/ballot box" mumbo jumbo. I, and many of you, have participated in this sham "two party" democracy farce for decades -- and things keep getting worse, not better. 05/18/06

One by one, we're losing our freedoms and our rights, supposedly guaranteed by our constitution. But, according to George Bush, our constitution is "just a (expletive) piece of paper". 12/19/05

At the present time the citizenry of the United States can do little or nothing to rid their government of the people who are knowingly and willfully betraying them. These people began to infiltrate our government more than half a century ago and are now firmly entrenched.

By various means and through multiple channels, they have succeeded in making mainstream an ideology and value system which are effectively destroying the United States by "morphing" it into something unrecognizable as the proud, respected nation we once knew and loved.

To add insult to injury, our destruction as a nation is being achieved without a shot being fired. Indeed, many citizens are knowingly or unknowingly cooperating in the destruction by accepting and promulgating ideas that are poisoning our culture, our heritage: diversity, multiculturalism, political correctness, "hate" speech, gun control, illegal immigration, globalism. No nation ingesting these poisons has ever survived intact.

Let me say that again. No nation ingesting these poisons has ever survived intact.

I've never been to Iran, nor do I know what daily life is like among the people who live there. Evidently the vast majority of Irians believe their nation and their way of life is worth preserving. I've never met Mr. Ahmadinejad. From information I've read about him on the internet, including his recent letter to Americans, I sincerely believe him to be an honorable man. Your estimation of him may or may not agree with my own.

As president of his country, he seems guided by an Iran First policy which, in my opinion, is as it should be. In that respect, the citizens of Iran are a fortunate people -- perhaps more fortunate than they will ever realize.

Ahmadinejad's Letter

,

November 30, 2006

In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

O, Almighty God, bestow upon humanity the perfect human being promised to all by You, and make us among his followers.

Noble Americans,

Were we not faced with the activities of the US administration in this part of the world and the negative ramifications of those activities on the daily lives of our peoples, coupled with the many wars and calamities caused by the US administration as well as the tragic consequences of US interference in other countries;

Were the American people not God-fearing, truth-loving, and justice-seeking, while the US administration actively conceals the truth and impedes any objective portrayal of current realities;

And if we did not share a common responsibility to promote and protect freedom and human dignity and integrity;

Then, there would have been little urgency to have a dialogue with you.

While Divine providence has placed Iran and the United States geographically far apart, we should be cognizant that human values and our common human spirit, which proclaim the dignity and exalted worth of all human beings, have brought our two great nations of Iran and the United States closer together.

Both our nations are God-fearing, truth-loving and justice-seeking, and both seek dignity, respect and perfection.

Both greatly value and readily embrace the promotion of human ideals such as compassion, empathy, respect for the rights of human beings, securing justice and equity, and defending the innocent and the weak against oppressors and bullies.

We are all inclined towards the good, and towards extending a helping hand to one another, particularly to those in need.

We all deplore injustice, the trampling of peoples’ rights and the intimidation and humiliation of human beings.

We all detest darkness, deceit, lies and distortion, and seek and admire salvation, enlightenment, sincerity and honesty.

The pure human essence of the two great nations of Iran and the United States testify to the veracity of these statements.

Noble Americans,

Our nation has always extended its hand of friendship to all other nations of the world.

Hundreds of thousands of my Iranian compatriots are living amongst you in friendship and peace, and are contributing positively to your society. Our people have been in contact with you over the past many years and have maintained these contacts despite the unnecessary restrictions of US authorities.

As mentioned, we have common concerns, face similar challenges, and are pained by the sufferings and afflictions in the world.

We, like you, are aggrieved by the ever-worsening pain and misery of the Palestinian people. Persistent aggressions by the Zionists are making life more and more difficult for the rightful owners of the land of Palestine. In broad day-light, in front of cameras and before the eyes of the world, they are bombarding innocent defenseless civilians, bulldozing houses, firing machine guns at students in the streets and alleys, and subjecting their families to endless grief.

No day goes by without a new crime.

Palestinian mothers, just like Iranian and American mothers, love their children, and are painfully bereaved by the imprisonment, wounding and murder of their children. What mother wouldn’t?

For 60 years, the Zionist regime has driven millions of the inhabitants of Palestine out of their homes. Many of these refugees have died in the Diaspora and in refugee camps. Their children have spent their youth in these camps and are aging while still in the hope of returning to homeland.

You know well that the US administration has persistently provided blind and blanket support to the Zionist regime, has emboldened it to continue its crimes, and has prevented the UN Security Council from condemning it.

Who can deny such broken promises and grave injustices towards humanity by the US administration?

Governments are there to serve their own people. No people wants to side with or support any oppressors. But regrettably, the US administration disregards even its own public opinion and remains in the forefront of supporting the trampling of the rights of the Palestinian people.

Let’s take a look at Iraq. Since the commencement of the US military presence in Iraq, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been killed, maimed or displaced. Terrorism in Iraq has grown exponentially. With the presence of the US military in Iraq, nothing has been done to rebuild the ruins, to restore the infrastructure or to alleviate poverty. The US Government used the pretext of the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but later it became clear that that was just a lie and a deception.

Although Saddam was overthrown and people are happy about his departure, the pain and suffering of the Iraqi people has persisted and has even been aggravated.

In Iraq, about one hundred and fifty thousand American soldiers, separated from their families and loved ones, are operating under the command of the current US administration. A substantial number of them have been killed or wounded and their presence in Iraq has tarnished the image of the American people and government.

Their mothers and relatives have, on numerous occasions, displayed their discontent with the presence of their sons and daughters in a land thousands of miles away from US shores. American soldiers often wonder why they have been sent to Iraq.

I consider it extremely unlikely that you, the American people, consent to the billions of dollars of annual expenditure from your treasury for this military misadventure.

Noble Americans,

You have heard that the US administration is kidnapping its presumed opponents from across the globe and arbitrarily holding them without trial or any international supervision in horrendous prisons that it has established in various parts of the world. God knows who these detainees actually are, and what terrible fate awaits them.

You have certainly heard the sad stories of the Guantanamo and Abu-Ghraib prisons. The US administration attempts to justify them through its proclaimed “war on terror.” But every one knows that such behavior, in fact, offends global public opinion, exacerbates resentment and thereby spreads terrorism, and tarnishes the US image and its credibility among nations.

The US administration’s illegal and immoral behavior is not even confined to outside its borders. You are witnessing daily that under the pretext of “the war on terror,” civil liberties in the United States are being increasingly curtailed. Even the privacy of individuals is fast losing its meaning. Judicial due process and fundamental rights are trampled upon. Private phones are tapped, suspects are arbitrarily arrested, sometimes beaten in the streets, or even shot to death.

I have no doubt that the American people do not approve of this behavior and indeed deplore it.

The US administration does not accept accountability before any organization, institution or council. The US administration has undermined the credibility of international organizations, particularly the United Nations and its Security Council. But, I do not intend to address all the challenges and calamities in this message.

The legitimacy, power and influence of a government do not emanate from its arsenals of tanks, fighter aircrafts, missiles or nuclear weapons. Legitimacy and influence reside in sound logic, quest for justice and compassion and empathy for all humanity. The global position of the United States is in all probability weakened because the administration has continued to resort to force, to conceal the truth, and to mislead the American people about its policies and practices.

Undoubtedly, the American people are not satisfied with this behavior and they showed their discontent in the recent elections. I hope that in the wake of the mid-term elections, the administration of President Bush will have heard and will heed the message of the American people.

My questions are the following:

Is there not a better approach to governance?

Is it not possible to put wealth and power in the service of peace, stability, prosperity and the happiness of all peoples through a commitment to justice and respect for the rights of all nations, instead of aggression and war?

We all condemn terrorism, because its victims are the innocent.

But, can terrorism be contained and eradicated through war, destruction and the killing of hundreds of thousands of innocents?

If that were possible, then why has the problem not been resolved?

The sad experience of invading Iraq is before us all.

What has blind support for the Zionists by the US administration brought for the American people? It is regrettable that for the US administration, the interests of these occupiers supersedes the interests of the American people and of the other nations of the world.

What have the Zionists done for the American people that the US administration considers itself obliged to blindly support these infamous aggressors? Is it not because they have imposed themselves on a substantial portion of the banking, financial, cultural and media sectors?

I recommend that in a demonstration of respect for the American people and for humanity, the right of Palestinians to live in their own homeland should be recognized so that millions of Palestinian refugees can return to their homes and the future of all of Palestine and its form of government be determined in a referendum. This will benefit everyone.

Now that Iraq has a Constitution and an independent Assembly and Government, would it not be more beneficial to bring the US officers and soldiers home, and to spend the astronomical US military expenditures in Iraq for the welfare and prosperity of the American people? As you know very well, many victims of Katrina continue to suffer, and countless Americans continue to live in poverty and homelessness.

I’d also like to say a word to the winners of the recent elections in the US:

The United States has had many administrations; some who have left a positive legacy, and others that are neither remembered fondly by the American people nor by other nations.

Now that you control an important branch of the US Government, you will also be held to account by the people and by history.

If the US Government meets the current domestic and external challenges with an approach based on truth and Justice, it can remedy some of the past afflictions and alleviate some of the global resentment and hatred of America. But if the approach remains the same, it would not be unexpected that the American people would similarly reject the new electoral winners, although the recent elections, rather than reflecting a victory, in reality point to the failure of the current administration’s policies. These issues had been extensively dealt with in my letter to President Bush earlier this year.

To sum up:

It is possible to govern based on an approach that is distinctly different from one of coercion, force and injustice.

It is possible to sincerely serve and promote common human values,
and honesty and compassion.

It is possible to provide welfare and prosperity without tension, threats, imposition or war.

It is possible to lead the world towards the aspired perfection by adhering to unity, monotheism, morality and spirituality and drawing
upon the teachings of the Divine Prophets.

Then, the American people, who are God-fearing and followers of Divine religions, will overcome every difficulty.

What I stated represents some of my anxieties and concerns.

I am confident that you, the American people, will play an instrumental role in the establishment of justice and spirituality throughout the world. The promises of the Almighty and His prophets will certainly be realized, Justice and Truth will prevail and all nations will live a true life in a climate replete with love, compassion and fraternity.

The US governing establishment, the authorities and the powerful should not choose irreversible paths. As all prophets have taught us, injustice and transgression will eventually bring about decline and demise. Today, the path of return to faith and spirituality is open and unimpeded.

We should all heed the Divine Word of the Holy Qur’an:

“But those who repent, have faith and do good may receive Salvation. Your Lord, alone, creates and chooses as He will, and others have no part in His choice; Glorified is God and Exalted above any partners they ascribe to Him.” (28:67-68)

I pray to the Almighty to bless the Iranian and American nations and indeed all nations of the world with dignity and success.

Iran: The Role of Armed Forces

IRNA - 11/26/06
Armed forces, forerunners in defending justice, people's rights

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said here Saturday that armed forces in the Islamic ruling system are forerunners of the nation in defending justice, rights of people, particularly the poor, promoting national security and protecting the values of Islam and Islamic Revolution.

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remark while speaking at the graduation ceremony of the cadets of the Islamic Republic Guards Corps (IRGC) at the Military Academy of Imam Hossein University.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces referred to militarism of the world powers as a means for gaining power and said that on the contrary, in the Islamic system, armed forces are actually the field of worship on account of the high logic of Islam:
The most important feature of IRGC is that its cornerstone was laid on Islamic values. It requires determined manpower capable of defending the nation, though the revolutionary conditions no more dominate the country and the Sacred Defense era is over.
Ayatollah Khamenei dismissed some semi-intellectual views against military forces and described a militaryman with Islamic identity as someone prepared to sacrifice himself for his high goal:
Therefore, a militaryman with an Islamic identity is not comparable to the violent and irrational US or Zionist troops and those from hegemonic countries.

Iran: The Criteria of Progress

,

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said here Thursday that changes in human communities are unavoidable, adding that control of world developments by the Zionists and global capitalism is a serious threat.

IRNA - 11/09/06

Control of world developments by Zionists, a threat

The Supreme Leader made the remarks at a public gathering in this northeastern provincial capital [Semnan] on the second day of his three-day visit to the province. He urged the need for vigilance:
The international bullying gangs, which developed the military apparatus of NATO to have hegemony over nations, are now determined to make NATO's cultural apparatus annihilate the national identity of human communities and achieve their goals.

They intend to control the major political, economic, social and cultural developments in the world by using their extensive media facilities.
Ayatollah Khamenei called for renovation, open-mindedness and proper management as a way to advancement:
The criteria of progress will be effective in the process of real changes and advancement, if they are used based on the basic characteristics of our national identity and principal ideals.

Otherwise, the growing indices and criteria of progress commonly used by some apparently developed Western countries will practically result in injustice, bullying by other nations, proliferation and use of destructive weapons such as atomic bomb, promotion of ethical corruption as well as disruption of family and social relations.
The Supreme Leader added that the progress to be achieved based on such criteria is rejected by the Iranian nation.

The Worst is Yet to Come: Act III, Scene I

,

The third and final act in the national tragedy that is the Bush adminis-
tration may soon play itself out. The Okhrana reports increasing indications of "something big" happening between the election and Christmas. That could be the long-planned attack on Iran.
CounterPunch - 10/31/06
by William S. Lind

The Third and Final Act: Attacking Iran

An attack on Iran will not be an invasion with ground troops. We don't have enough of those left to invade Ruritania. It will be a "package" of air and missile strikes, by U.S. forces or Israel. If Israel does it, there is a possibility of nuclear weapons being employed.

But Israel would prefer the U.S. to do the dirty work, and what Israel wants, Israel usually gets, at least in Washington.

That this would constitute folly piled on top of folly is no deterrent to the Bush administration. Like the French Bourbons, it forgets nothing and it learns nothing. It takes pride in not adapting. Or did you somehow miss George W. Bush's declaration of Presidential Infallibility? It followed shortly after the visit to the aircraft carrier with the "Mission Accomplished" sign.

The Democrats taking either or both Houses of Congress, if it happens, will not make any difference. They would rather have the Republicans start and lose another war than prevent a national disaster. Politics comes first and the country second. Nor would they dare cross Israel.

Many of the consequences of a war with Iran are easy to imagine. Oil would soar to at least $200 per barrel if we could get it. Gas shortages would bring back the gas lines of 1973 and 1979. Our European alliances would be stretched to the breaking point if not beyond it. Most people outside the Bushbubble can see all this coming.

What I fear no one forsees is a substantial danger that we could lose the army now deployed in Iraq. I have mentioned this in previous columns, but I want to go into it here in more detail because the scenario may soon go live.
Unfortunately, no one in Washington and few people in the U.S. military will even consider this possibility. Why? Because we have fallen victim to our own propaganda. Over and over the U.S. military tells itself, "We're the greatest! We're number one! No one can defeat us. No one can even fight us. We're the greatest military in all of history!"

It's bull. The U.S. armed forces are technically well-trained, lavishly resourced Second Generation militaries. They are being fought and defeated by Fourth Generation opponents in both Iraq and Afghanistan. They can also be defeated by Third Generation enemies who can observe, orient, decide and act more quickly than can America's vast, process-ridden, Powerpoint-enslaved military headquarters.

They can be defeated by strategy, by stratagem, by surprise and by preemption. Unbeatable militaries are like unsinkable ships. They are unsinkable until someone or something sinks them. Read Article

Ahmadinejad predicts Israel's collapse, warns of 'boiling wrath'

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has predicted Israel will collapse and warned that its allies face the "boiling wrath" of the people if they continue to support the Jewish state.

The renewed assault on Israel by Ahmadinejad -- who has been castigated by world powers for his frequent anti-Israeli outbursts -- came as tens of thousands marched through Tehran in an annual pro-Palestinian rally.

Ahmadinejad, who has previously called for Israel to be "wiped from the map" and described the Holocaust as a myth, told the protestors:
This regime (Israel) will be gone, definitely.

You (the Western powers) should know that any government that stands by the Zionist regime from now on will not see any result but the hatred of the people. The wrath of the region's people is boiling.

Efforts to stabilise this fraudulent regime have completely failed, thank God . . . This regime has lost the rationale of its existence.
Ahmadinejad described his warning as an "ultimatum" for Western powers:
You should not complain that we did not give a warning. We are saying this explicitly now.

If a hurricane starts be rest assured that the dimensions of this hurricane will not be limited to the geographic borders of Palestine.

This regime (Israel) will take its supporters to the bottom of the swamp.

The best solution is for you to take all the components of the regime and take it away.
Chanting "Death to Israel" and predicting the "Triumph of Palestine", tens of thousands of people had earlier converged on Tehran University, where Ahmadinejad gave his speech, to mark Iran's Quds (Jerusalem) Day.

Started on the initiative of Iran's revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the event annually attracts massive crowds, many of them government workers, to call for the handing of Jerusalem to the Palestinians.

Iranian foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki referred to the sex scandal that has left Israeli president Moshe Katsav facing possible indictment for rape, saying such "ethical deviation" showed Israel was collapsing.

"The Zionist regime is filled with moral corruption and ethical deviation in its highest ranks. Therefore this regime internally, and regionally from the outside, is cracking and is falling apart."

Ahmadinejad once again questioned the extent of the Holocaust and said that, in any case, it was not right for the Palestinians to pay for events committed on European soil.

"If the Holocaust is real why are those who have the opposite opinion about it being arrested and jailed? If it is true, where did it happen? If it was in Europe, why should it be paid for in Palestine?"
Iran insists it has every right to a full nuclear fuel cycle and has refused to obey repeated UN deadlines to halt uranium enrichment, which the West fears could be diverted to make weapons.

Ahmadinejad reaffirmed Iran's defiant stance, saying "Iran is ready to negotiate but will not tolerate the slightest pressure."

He also recalled that on a recent visit to the United States he had dared Western powers in an address to a think-tank to shut their own nuclear fuel programmes and let Iran supply the material.

"I told them 'You shut down your nuclear programmes and we will produce fuel from the fuel cycle in five years time and sell it to you at a 50 percent discount!"

Denmark: Peace in the Middle East

, ,

IRNA - 09/22/06

Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller conferred on Wednesday with Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on regional developments.

The meeting between the foreign ministers was held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

At the meeting, the Danish foreign minister referred to the current developments in the Middle East and highlighted the significant role of the Islamic Republic of Iran and expressed the hope that Iran would help restore stability and security in the region, particularly in Iraq.

Withdrawal of foreign troopers in Iraq would lead to civil war in the war shattered country, said the Danish minister.

The Iranian foreign minister, for his part, said various ethnic groups and tribes as well as religious factions including Shiites and Sunnis have lived in peace and tranquility for a long time in that country and the current fighting in the country is rooted in the presence of occupying forces and wrong polices of the US.

"Why are the terrorists groups in Iraq engaged in massacre of innocent civilians instead of campaigning against the occupiers?," he asked adding that withdrawal of occupying forces is the only solution to the problem.

Iran is committed to providing assistance to the Iraqi nation in attaining peace and stability, Mottaki said.

"Fox News Fans the Hysteria"
by Paul Craig Roberts - 01/30/06

Can we be optimistic and assume that diplomatic failure does not include orchestrated failure by the Bush administration? Alas, we cannot expect too much from the American people as even the corrected report indicates a majority of the population in thrall to disinformation.

The only "evidence" that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons is mere assertion by members of the Bush administration and the neoconsevative press. Iran says it is not pursuing nuclear weapons, and the International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors say there is no evidence of a weapons program.

Iran is a signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Under the treaty, signatories have the right to develop nuclear energy. All they are required to do is to make reports to the IAEA and keep their facilities open to inspection. Iran complies with these requirements.

There is no Iranian "defiance." When news media report "defiance," they purvey disinformation. The "seals" on Iranian facilities were placed there voluntarily by the Iranians while they attempted to resolve the false charges brought by the Bush administration.

The "Iran crisis" is entirely the product of the Bush administration's determination to deprive Iran of its rights as a signatory of the non-proliferation treaty. It is just another demonstration of President Bush's opinion that his word overrules fact, law and international treaties.

Despite the clear and unambiguous facts, the Fox Opinion Dynamics poll reports that 60% of Republicans, 41% of Independents, and 36% of Democrats support using air strikes and ground troops against Iran in order to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

This poll indicates an appalling extent of ignorance and misinformation among the American public. The Bush administration will take advantage of this ignorance to initiate another war in the Middle East.

A majority of Americans have now been deceived twice on the same issue. Just as there was no evidence that Iraq was developing nuclear weapons, there is no evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.

There is nothing but unproven assertions, assertions, moreover, that are contradicted by the evidence that does exist. Americans, it would appear, are so anxious for wars that they welcome being fooled into them.

One wonders, also, where the 60% of Republicans, 41% of Independents, and 36% of Democrats think the US will find the ground troops with which to invade Iran. As the three-year old "cakewalk war" in Iraq has made completely clear, the US does not have enough ground troops to successfully occupy Iraq and to suppress a small insurgency drawn from a Sunni population of 5 million people.

We hear report after report from military authorities that the Iraq war is straining our armed forces to the breaking point. For example, a Pentagon study by Andrew Krepinevich concludes that the US Army cannot sustain the pace of troop deployments to Iraq long enough to break the back of the insurgency.

Every military expert knows this to be true, although few can afford to say it. If we are on the breaking point from trying to deal with an insurgency drawn from 5 million people, how are we going to send ground troops into vastly larger Iran with a population of 70 million people? It boggles the mind that a majority of Americans favor an impossible policy.

The situation is even worse than it so far sounds. Another recent poll, a LA Times/Bloomberg poll, finds ... that 57% of the respondents "favor military intervention if Iran's government pursues a program that could enable it to build nuclear arms." These are the same respondents, 53% of whom believe it was not worth going to war against Iraq.

The poll thus reveals the American public as grist for the neoconservatives' war mill. If a country can produce material for nuclear energy, it can, with additional facilities and knowledge, produce material for nuclear weapons. Thus, if Iran exercises its rights under the non-proliferation treaty, 57% of Americans support a US military attack on Iran!

American politicians, whose strings are pulled by the American-Israeli Political Action Committee, despite AIPAC's current engulfment in spying charges against the US, are demanding, as we will see below, that the US attack Iran "in order to protect Israel."
- - -
Moreover, Israel has never signed the non-proliferation treaty and does have nuclear weapons. An Iranian invasion of Israel could be fatal for Iran.

Why, then, is the American population being whipped up by the Bush administration and Fox "News" into war hysteria against Iran?

Fox is aggressively agitating for war with Iran. On shows such as Hannity and Combs, guest after guest -- Newt Gingrich, Ollie North, various retired generals, pundits, and even Democratic politicians -- agitate for attacking Iran:
The US must absolutely attack Iran if for no other reason than
"for the sake of Israel."
-- Bob Beckel

We need to renew and re-strengthen our commitment to Israel.
-- Bill Richardson

Iran not only cannot be trusted with nuclear technology, but also Iranians cannot be trusted with their oil.
-- Newt Gingrich
On January 27, 2006 Democratic strategist Pat Cadell expressed mystification as to how strongly the polls surged, literally overnight,
in support for attacking Iran.

One wonders if Americans ever think of the consequences of the rash actions that they say they favor. The Bush administration has placed Iraq in the hands of the majority Shia, who are allied with Iran, which is allied with Hizbollah, the strongest military force in Lebanon, which is friendly to Hamas, the new Palestinian authority.

What response might a US attack on Iran bring from the Shia population in Iraq? What terrorism might Iran unleash throughout the Middle East? What US puppets might fall? What consequences might follow if Iran not only shuts off Iranian oil, but knocks out facilities throughout the region and blocks oil flows from the Middle East?

Compared to attacking Iran, attacking Iraq was a small if reckless risk. Nevertheless, the unexpected consequences of the US invasion of Iraq have prevented the Bush administration from achieving its goals.

Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda must be marveling at the rank stupidity of the American people. Maybe Fox "News" only pretends to be the Ministry of War Propaganda for the Bush administration and is really in the employ of al Qaeda.

Pat Buchanan: This Is Not Our War

No, This Is Not Our War
by Pat Buchanan - 07/21/06

My country has been "torn to shreds," said Fouad Siniora, the prime minister of Lebanon, as the death toll among his people passed 300 civilian dead, 1,000 wounded, with half a million homeless.

Israel must pay for the "barbaric destruction," said Siniora.

To the contrary, says columnist Lawrence Kudlow, "Israel is doing the Lord's work."

On American TV, former Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu says the ruination of Lebanon is Hezbollah's doing.

But is it Hezbollah that is using U.S. built F-16s, with precision-guided bombs, and 155-mm artillery pieces to wreak death and devastation on Lebanon?

No, Israel is doing this, with the blessing and without a peep of protest from President Bush. And we wonder why they hate us. - Response

"Today, we are all Israelis!" brayed Ken Mehlman of the Republican National Committee to a gathering of Christians United for Israel.

One wonders if these Christians care about what is happening to our Christian brethren in Lebanon and Gaza, who have had all power cut off by Israeli air strikes, an outlawed form of collective punishment, that has left them with no sanitation, rotting food, impure water, and days without light or electricity in the horrible heat of July.

When summer power outrages occur in America, it means a rising rate of death among our sick and elderly, and women and infants. One can only imagine what a hell it must be today in Gaza City and Beirut.

But all this carnage and destruction has only piqued the blood lust of the hairy-chested warriors at The Weekly Standard. In a signed editorial, "It's Our War," William Kristol calls for America to play her rightful role in this war by "countering this act of aggression by Iran with a military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities. Why wait?"

"Why wait?" Well, one reason is that the United States has not been attacked. A second is a small thing called the Constitution. Where does George W. Bush get the authority to launch a war on Iran? When did Congress declare war or authorize a war on Iran?

Answer: It never did.

But these neoconservatives [Zionists] care no more about the Constitution than they cared about the truth when they lied us into war in Iraq.

"Why wait?" How about thinking of the fate of those 25,000 Americans in Lebanon if we launch an unprovoked war on Iran? How many would wind up dead or hostages of Hezbollah, if Iran gave the order to retaliate for the slaughter of their citizens by U.S. bombs? What would happen to the 130,000 U.S. troops in Iraq, if Shi'ites and Iranian "volunteers" joined forces to exact revenge on our soldiers?

What about America? Richard Armitage, who did four tours in Nam and knows a bit about war, says that, in its ability to attack Western targets, al-Qaeda is the B team, Hezbollah the A Team. If Bush bombs Iran, what prevents Hezbollah from launching retaliatory attacks inside the United States?
- - -
What is Kristol's moral and legal ground for a war on Iran? It is the "Iranian act of aggression" against Israel, and that Iran is on the road to nuclear weapons.

But . . . there is no solid proof Iran is in violation of the nuclear nonproliferation treaty, which it has signed but Israel refuses to sign.

If Iran's nuclear program justifies war, why cannot the neocons make that case in the constitutional way, instead of prodding Bush to launch a Pearl Harbor attack? Do they fear they have no credibility left after pushing Bush into this bloody quagmire in Iraq that has cost almost 2,600 dead and 18,000 wounded Americans?

No, Kenny boy, we are not "all Israelis." Some of us still think of ourselves as Americans, first, last, and always. And, no, Mr. Kristol, this is not "our war." -- It's your war.

Suspicions

The Zionist occupied government of the United States suspects Iran's nuclear enrichment activities are a cover for a weapons program. Lest we forget, these are the same people (neocons) who suspected Saddam Hussein of possessing weapons of mass destruction. Enough said.
MyWay News 06/27/06
by Nasser Karimi

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Tuesday that Iran does not need negotiations with the United States over its nuclear program, apparently seeking to reassure hard-liners the country will not cave in as it considers a key Western incentives package.

Khamenei, who has the final word on all state matters, did not give his position on the proposals aimed at persuading Iran to impose a long-term moratorium on enriching uranium.

Iran received the proposals June 6, and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said the government will not respond officially until at least mid-August. The United States and Europe are pressing for a quicker reply.

The United States has said it would join direct talks with Iran, which is being asked to suspend uranium enrichment - a program it has vowed to pursue and never give up completely. Enrichment is a process that can produce fuel for nuclear generators or the material for nuclear warheads.

Loyalists in Iran's clerical-run leadership have called on the government to reject the proposals and have painted any agreement to talks with Washington as a surrender. i.e., not in the best interests of the Iranian people.

Khamenei's remarks could be aimed at assuaging their fears by showing that talks with the United States are not a major lure for the government and that negotiations with the West will not mean giving up enrichment.
Negotiations with the United States would have no benefit for us, and we do not
need them.

We do not negotiate with anybody on achieving and exploiting nuclear technology.
But if they recognize our nuclear rights, we are ready to negotiate about controls, supervisions and international guarantees.
He said Iran was willing to hold talks on its own terms, warning that the West can misuse the negotiating process and try to bar Tehran from its right to pursue enrichment.

If Iran accepts the incentives package, the United States has offered to join European nations in multilateral talks with Tehran over a framework that will guarantee its nuclear program cannot produce weapons.

Washington's offer to join talks was seen as a major concession since the United States lists Iran as a sponsor of international terrorism and there have been no diplomatic relations between the two countries since 1979, when militants stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and took Americans hostage for 444 days.

President Bush has warned Iran that it faces U.N. Security Council action unless it accepts the incentives. It is uncertain what the Iranian people think of Mr. Bush's warning. Their response to his warning might well be "Bring It On!"

Holocaust Should Be Investigated

, , , ...

The Jerusalem Post
June 16, 2006

"I think we have sufficiently talked about this matter and these Holocaust events need to be further investigated by independent and impartial parties," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said at a news conference on Friday following a meeting with China's president.
An event that has influenced so many diplomatic and political equations of the world needs to investigated and researched by impartial and independent groups.
Speaking in Shanghai, China, he added that Jews, Christians and Muslims all had the "right to be respected."

Ahmadinejad has come in for sharp criticism in Europe for repeatedly casting doubt on the Holocaust and calling for Israel to be destroyed or shifted to Europe.

On Monday, German Jews and politicians protested Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's repeated denial [casting doubt] of the Holocaust while his country kicked off its World Cup campaign on Sunday, declaring that he would be unwelcome at the tournament.

About 1,200 people [German Jews], according to police estimates, gathered in a downtown Nuremberg square, many waving Israeli flags.

In the end of May, during a Spiegel interview, Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying that he doubted the magazine would write 'the truth' about the Nazi genocide against Europe's Jews.
We want to know whether this crime really happened or not. If so, then those responsible should be punished and not the Palestinians ... If it didn't happen, then the Jews have to go back where they came from.
He also played up the credentials of Western Holocaust deniers such as the British historian David Irving and echoed some of their views.

Der Spiegel

In its latest edition, the German magazine Der Spiegel has published an exclusive interview with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The interview was published in its entirety with Mr. Ahmadinejad being allowed to express his views on a topic which would have resulted in a lengthy prison sentence had they been stated by a German citizen -- the official version of the holocaust.

During the interview Mr. Ahmadinejad questioned the veracity of the official version, saying that if the holocaust happened as claimed and Germans or Europeans were collectively guilty, then Israelis should be repatriated to Europe. And if it didn't happen as claimed, then there was even less justification for the Palestinians to suffer occupation and injustice at their hands.

The Iranian president also challanged German law which stipulates that scientific research into the holocaust is punishable by prison should it result in findings unfavourable to or objectionable by the Jewish lobby.

In addition, Mr. Ahmadinejad said that the young generation of Germans should not be made to feel guilty for whatever their great grandparents might have done and that Germans should stop allowing themselves to be humiliated by the Zionists after having paid reparations for decades.

So far there has been no threat of legal action against Der Spiegel. If this published interview remains unchallenged in the courts then it should now be permissible in Germany to report the views of holocaust revisionists, and as long as the revisionists themselves are not German, no charges would be brought. Germans, hitherto forbidden from discussing these issues, might be able to do so simply by quoting what others have said without adding their own opinion or judgment.

The first cracks in the political and legal edifice to protect the holocaust industry from scrutiny and criticism have started to appear. These cracks are likely to widen over time.
