los angeles, disneyland, and the wild desert of anza borrego

Marc and I traveled to Los Angeles on Wednesday Jan. 10th and stayed until Monday morning. We had the good luck of being offered a place to stay with Briget and Joel Thomson. The great hospitality and interesting hosts were only one of the pleasant surprises we had while visiting LA.
Our main priority was to go to Disneyland. We went on Thurday and stayed from opening to closing hours, enjoying a magical land. I know it sounds somewhat cheesy, but the rides and attractions are so well done that you really get swept away into a wonderland. What impressed Marc the most was the attention to detail. Everything was kept to theme, even when waiting in line for a ride you could be entertained by the landscape, the gardens and decoration. We were never bored, not even when waiting in line for half an hour. We were also very lucky that the park was not as packed full as usual and we didn’t have to wait long for any ride.
After our visit to LA we drove with Clare Duran and her brother Steve to Anza Borrego for a three day orienteering event in the deep Californian desert. The terrain and maps were amazing. There was a possibility to do 5 orienteering events in three days, which is amazing in itself. Bill Gookin ( http://www.gookinaid.com/ ) and the San Diego Orienteering Club did a great job of entertaining us on their richly detailed and fantastic map. We raced a middle distance, a sprint, a long distance and a Maze-O. On Monday we could have taken part in a scavenger-O as well.
Unfortunately I have been fighting a cold for the last 10 days and I wasn’t able to take part in the long distance or the maze-O, as well as, train well in the last week either. It’s quite a bummer to be this sick while on vacation, but especially when the point of being here is to be able to train a lot. This has not happened, which is too bad. It has been quite an ironic trip so far, besides being sick, the weather has been really cold. We were expecting nice "summer-like" conditions for training and racing here in California and Arizona. Instead, it has been freezing cold with temperatures around 2 to 3 degree Celsius during the day. Last week in Phoenix they had the coldest temperature they have had in 17 years. Conversely, Switzerland continues to have a mild winter with very little snow and relatively warm weather. Oh ironic.
I have posted some pictures in the photo section, and when I get home I will also post the maps from our training camp in Aptos, and the races in Anza Borrego.
Now it’s time to get healthy and enjoy our last few days in the US with my dad in Phoenix. On Friday we fly home…

Yay trips to disney land! I particularly like the picture of Marc almost being eaten by the large whale. Good thing he is such a good athlete - his chances of escaping will be good!
