camping, toast
Can you see it can you see it?
Thinking that the river would consume it 'W' threw a slice of burnt toast out into the water.
An hour later, the lone slice is still floating, caught in the vortex.

Circling around and around, two hours later.

Four hours and counting. It was too dark at night to take pictures but I went to check, and the toast was still there, making its wide circuit. I had to laugh. Well, you had to be there I guess.

camping, bears, Canada
There is an abundance of wild berries in the Kootenays. Thimble berries.

Wild strawberries. So sweet!

Plus blueberries, raspberries and Saskatoons.
Click here for a yummy closeup.

Why so many berries in this region you ask?

Bears of course!

Everytime a bear eats, it of course deposits a great many berry seeds. The great circle of life.
What to do if you get to the berries before the bear does? Make wild berry pancakes!
There it is, the best breakfast ever. Not bad for camping eh? (Oh that's blueberry syrup by the way.)

camping, summer, Canada
Just returned from a week long camping trip in the
Kootenay region of British Columbia. The mission? Summer sun.
The first day, escaping wet Vancouver.

Mission accomplished.

travel, camping, vacation, Canada
of a recent road trip.
Bob's Lake. Fishing was good, though the fish were too small. So peaceful, the only sound heard was the whining of the mosquitoes. We would've stayed longer if not for that.

Found a swing at the other end of the lake. Nothing like a swing to make you feel young.

Vermillion lake. Isn't vermillion red? The water was turquoise. Hmm.

Heading down along the Fraser river to Lilloett. I just love this rugged landscape!
Forest fire! Started by a huge R.V. that just blew up and caught fire. Tried to take a picture of it but it didn't turn out. Good thing we got through when we did because the next day the whole highway was closed for several days.
Big slide!
Heading down into the Fraser Canyon. The muddy Fraser River. All that silt carried down to the ocean has formed the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.
Stay tuned for Hell's Gate Canyon!

travel, camping
Headed northeast to
Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park for a long weekend of camping and fishing. The weather forecast was excellent, sunny skies and highs of 30. (Went swimming...it's only May!)
Remember , it's important to buckle up on these bumpy backcountry roads!

What a view. Tried fishing but absolutely no bites, not a nibble.
Too many people though in the campground near the lake for us. We prefer more secluded areas and so headed up a logging road to a quiet spot near a stream. I always sleep well if I can hear the sound of water nearby.

I know it was foolish but I put leftovers from our dinner, out on a rock, hoping to attract some wildlife, maybe a lynx or bobcat. No luck though, and so bagged up the trash and hung it high up in a tree away from bears. (We saw several over the weekend, but could not get close enough for photos)

Heading home.
Mount Currie in the distance.

life, swimming, friends, camping
...
morcheeba - summertime.mp3Well, vacation time is almost over. Back to work for three weeks tomorrow. I've had the best holiday ever, the past two weeks. In fact, I had such a good time I hardly took any photos! Anyway, here are a few.
Went to
Marble Canyon Provincial Park for my new guyfriend's friend's birthday. They are rock climbers. Climbers' paradise here I think. Though I don't know much about that...yet.

Water. That means swimming. Not quite swimmers' paradise, the water so cold your skin feels like it is burning. But oddly enough, after 5 minutes of hypothermia it didn't feel so bad. The first day I swam across the lake once, with a wet suit. The next day, 4 times without. Wonder if the English Channel is that cold. Brrrrr.
And where there is cold water there are big fish. Yummy. Look at that goofy guy wearing my hat. Hmmm.
Went for a hike one day up to the waterfall that crazy people climb in the winter when it freezes over. Can you imagine? Crazy. Crazier than swimming in icy water that's for sure.
The sunset, driving to the next destination. Sigh. Three weeks of work, then two weeks off again...can't wait.
