I agree that Al sheet will not support combustion under normal circumstances.- it melts before it ignites.
From what I was told - the unique circumstances from weapons explosions caused the Al fires.
This may have involved atomization of Al plate/sheet and ignition or residual incendiary materials from the weapons.
The flame retardent coating I mentioned was to protect Al from contaminants and provide a thermal barrier and delay melting.
