Wake Up And Smell The Cooum

A big dose of "Eh?"

Design Cues

,

This site has been mentioned somewhere previously but it's just too good not to mention again.

Cool Hunter

On the topic of design another site, this time with an Indian perspective, well worth visiting is the official site of Laurie Baker.

Laurie Baker : Official Site of the Architect

It's a real pity then that given the construction boom all over India that more designers and architects don't employ a bit more originality in their work. There's no real verve or wow factor to most of the new buildings that we see. No intrigue. All of them tend to be modeled after one template : upright rectangular structure with a choice of blue\black\green glass.

Heck, you get more choices when you order a subway.

Taking this a bit further, examples of energy efficient buildings are few and far between. We live in a country that gets it's fair share of sunshine so why not capitalise on this? Surely there has to be a correlation between inventive design and the mental health of people who use the building. A bit of wonder and amazement can't be a bad thing. If I wanted cubes I'd stare at a cardboard box all day.

Perhaps, it is an indicator about how we as a nation tend to get be rather myopic on matters that requite long term planning. Too often we go in for the short term fix. Because it's cheaper, because it gets completed faster and most probably because no ones gives a damn anyway.

Who cares about minor details like the environment as long as the engines of the economy keep chugging away?

Rays!!!

I've finally purchsed sunglasses.

Not the Oakleys I'd orginally planned on, mostly because they made me look like a very trendy beetle, but instead went in for a pair of Ray Bans.

It was a pretty good deal because my company had given me some gift vouchers that I could use and I only had to pay the difference.

Henceforth please excuse me if I decide to ignore you because I'm too cool for school!!!

A quiet Friday in the office generally leads to stuff like this......

Sometimes, the effectiveness of tests like this are best judged by the people who know you well. Too often we take a very blinkered view of our own personalities.....

Action???

It promises to be a quiet weekend.....NOT!!!

NEXT!!!

My resignation has become official. Because company policy dictates that I have to remain with them for an additional 30 days after giving notice of my intent to resign, I sit here twiddling my thumbs.

Not really....

I twiddle my thumbs when I'm not in the cafeteria looking for stuff to eat.....this does not include the fruit.

My last day here is October 4th.

So life outside the office has mostly revolved around getting ready for my impending departure. My license is almost ready. Apparently, I'll have to prove that I can ride a scooter around a figure 8. Not looking forward to that.

My attempts to sell the little furniture that I have bought is proving to be farcial. One prospective client wanted photographs.

Mostly though a lot of my thought has centered around what to do as soon as I get home. Only one answer has been forthcoming.....

GOA !!!!

Ah!!!! Sussegado.....

Distractions

,

The past few days have passed without much event. Which is not the same as saying that nothing of interest is happening.

The world of cricket is currently occupied with the Twenty 20 World Cup. Compared to the recently (not really) concluded ICC Cricket World Cup, which turned out to be a farcial tournament at best, the reception to this tournament has been positive. Indeed, big hitting combined with some truly exciting matches (India vs Pakistan) as well as the shorter time taken for each match to be played out has made viewing easier.

The purists will be left fuming......

In other things of interest, check out the Netherlands Tax Office building.....

The government to pass a law forcing Indian architects to injest hallucinogenic substances on a regular basis. The way I see it right now all Indian Government office buildings are monuments to cubism.

Back to the topic of World Cups, I wonder whats happening with the rugby.....

In the spirit of eating well I tried my hand at making mashed potatoes for breakfast today. The menu was going to be sausages, eggs and mash.

All things considered my first attempt at making mashed potatoes went pretty well. Yummy in your tummy!!!

That said I now have a new appreciation for the art of beating the damn vegetable to a pulp.

My culinary adventures continue....

Tomorrow, Sayeed makes tea. With milk.....
