Post 602 Babysitting Nyah

, ,

2010 Feb 09 Last night my daughter called and asked if I could babysit Nyah from 8 to 11 p.m. This was my first time babysitting on my own as Marian was tired and hurting and in bed. Nyah was already in bed and asleep when I got there so I thought I would have a quiet night working on editing my book as I had brought my laptop with me. About 15 minutes after I got there, she woke up and began to cry. I watched and listened to her on the monitor and decided to leave her alone for a few minutes to see if she would go back to sleep.

After a few minutes, she wasn't settling down so I went upstairs to see what I could do. I tried giving her her soother and her blanket but she just shoved them away with her hands. I tried to rub her back but as soon as I touched her she shoved me away, rolled over, and cried even louder. I picked her up a couple of times but that too was futile as she also pushed me away. I put her back in her crib and decided to just leave her alone and let her cry as there was no soothing her and she didn't even seem conscious of me in a cognitive way. As she was crying, she continually rubbed her eyes as if there was something in them, but there wasn’t anything in her crib that would cause her any irritation. During the whole ordeal she cried and sobbed uncontrollably and only a couple of times did she even open her eyes to look at me, and I could tell that she didn't recognize me, or even the sound of my voice.

After about 15 minutes of her crying, I decided to go downstairs and call her mother but just as my foot touched the main floor, she stopped crying. I mean instantly! I watched her on the monitor and she only made a couple of whimpers before she went off to sleep.

My daughter told me later that she does that quite a bit and that all they can do is leave her alone. She also said that her cousin [4 years old] also does the same thing. I felt it was like she was having a dream [astral travel] and that she was upset by what she was seeing and experiencing, and that as soon as the problem was resolved, she stopped crying.

Post 585 Young but Old

’09 Jan 08 Yesterday afternoon I babysat my 14 month old granddaughter while my daughter went to get a blood test and do some errands. I was sitting on the couch and she was standing beside me playing with her toys when she lost her balance. She managed to sit down but then fell forward and hit her head on my left leg before I could reach her. I reached down to help her sit up and saw her lower lip begin to drop. I said, “Ouch” and she looked and pointed at my leg. I reached down to rub my leg and as I was going to touch her head, she reached over and grabbed her blanket, stood up and then began to drape it over my knees and legs. She then hugged my legs for a few seconds before she looked up at me. She then held her outstretched arms toward me and as I leaned forward and picked her up, she gave me a hug and a cuddle as if to make it all better. She then looked at me to see if I was all right. I smiled at her and she smiled back. She then climbed down from my lap and carried on playing with her blanket and toys.

My Granddaughter, Nyah, celebrated her first birthday a few days early as her birthday is not until Oct 28

Post 471 Nyah at five months

, ,

Nyah, my grand daughter, is five months old now and weighs almost 14 pounds. She had the croup a couple of weeks ago, and she was not a happy camper. I don’t see her everyday, so when I do see her, I notice a change in her, especially in her alertness and her curiosity in things going on around her.

Post 430 Another snow storm - Nyah @ 2 months

, , , ...

’08 Dec 24 We had another snow storm last night and this morning and we got dumped on with almost 1 foot (30 cm) of heavy wet snow. It took me 2 ½ hours and Marian was out running the snow blower for about an hour.

Marian and I went over to Janice’s (daughter) for brunch and while we were there the snow plough came by and duped a mountain of snow in her driveway that I had to shovel out before we could leave. That pile was heavy and dense as it was packed and also the weather had changed and instead of wet snow, it was now raining for a couple of hours, and I mean raining… Tonight I’m feeling a little stiff and sore, I think it was the last shoveling and all the twisting and turning that got me.

Nyah (Post 393) is almost 8 weeks old now. She’s growing fast and becoming more alert and also very animated.
