I just finished installing and configuring the new Windows 7 in my mother's computer. All in all, the migration was a pain in the ass and most of that is because the way Windows stores configuration files (I'm guilty of not using the migration assistant). There were thousands of files I had to back up in a DVD and an aditional pendrive, and when I was finished, I didn't know where to put the multiple configuration folders. It all went into "Roaming" inside each user profile (3 profiles full of photos, music, some videos, lots of documents, random selection of trojans...). Apparently, most stuff worked after all, except the TV card (detected, but not working because the integrated graphics aren't powerful enough to work anymore).
I can't say I'm happy, as it took me over 8 hours to do it properly (slow machine). But Windows XP was agonizing and infested to the bone; it had to die! My first impression is that Windows 7 is really nice and fast, polished enough and way better than XP. But when I came back to my PC with
KDE, I felt at home: it's so much better and simpler, take a look...
Windows 7 looks more convoluted, more "in your face", more busy. I still liked it, too much.
