Spelling Glee

, ,

I like to think that I'm a good speller. I studied English to a reasonable level, and enjoy writing. I wouldn't say that I'm a spelling "snob", but I certainly cringe at misspelled words (well... when I notice them anyway  ). I'm not saying that I'm perfect, and I do spell words incorrectly. With today's technology, however, to post a comment/blog post/emails with misspelled words is just lazy.

Which brings me to the point of my post. I have discovered one of the great feelings in life. Whenever I write a document and use the spell checker, it fills me with great pride when I haven't spelt any words incorrectly. Don't get me wrong - this doesn't happen that often. I often make typos, and there are some tricky words out there, but when I get the "Spelling check completed" message without having to replace any words, I do smile.

A bit sad really, but simple things.... Anyone else out there experience the same thing?

And yes I know I have now left myself open for scrutiny on all my posts now

Yeah, I know what you mean. The littlest victories in life can make all the difference. I've got loads of things like your spelling one, but there's no way I'm gonna put them up here!

I feel the same way.

Personally, I've come to view spelling checkers as a crutch. A software dictionary will catch many mistakes, surely, but I've found that if one instead simply reviews what they write, both immediately and after a reasonable lapse of time, it's both more effective and more educational. I don't make all that many spelling mistakes, either, but I only ever self-check. It may not work for everyone, but it certainly works for me.

hahahahaha

Spell-checkers are harmful to society. How will we ever learn? :D

Yes I like it too, when I've typed something with NO mistakes. It's even better when you're touch typing and there is no red underlining!
We have an online notice board for each course at uni. Some people post questions to tutors on there using txt spk! Grrrr it annoys me sooo much!
