Life's Little Annoyances #115 - Nice Biscuits

, , ,

Today at work, the age-old discussion arose about which type of biscuit is the best. Someone made the (quite frankly) preposterous suggestion that Nice biscuits are worthy of the title. This is incorrect, and the only award Nice biscuits can possibly be eligible for is the "World's Most Inappropriately Named Biscuit", which I'm sure it would win hands-down.

The best biscuit is of course the Malted Milk.

Life's Little Annoyances #4 - Breaking Your Favourite Mug

, , ,

I had a bit of a traumatic Easter weekend. On Saturday, I was making a delicious cup of tea, and I broke my mug. This may not sound particularly distressing, but it was my mug. My special mug. A mug that's been with me for 8 years. It was the perfect mug, and it held the perfect amount of tea: not too much, not too little. I've fought countless battles to keep my mug, convincing Wifety that it did match the new mugs we got for our wedding (even though it really didn't). It survived three house moves, and the great mug clear-out of 2006. It was like an old friend; a constant in a crazy world.

Now it is no more. It cannot be repaired, and will never be replaced. As it happens, I got a new mug on Sunday, as part of a Doctor Who Easter egg. It's not the same, however, and holds less tea than my old mug (and yes, I was sad enough to measure the volume). It has got Daleks on it, which is good, but early signs show that it will not be up to the task of replacing the mug.

Possibly one of the greatest posts ever made

Not this one, but this one.

I'm still smiling on the third read. Maybe it's the awesome art skillz. Maybe it's just because otters, tea, and time travel is a winning combination.

Monkey!

I now have a new object on my desk at work. I give you monkey! Not only is he awesome, but he came free with PG Tips, the world's best tea bags (next to Earl Grey of course).

Check out the Monkey in action.

My Name Is Earl

I love tea. Tea is the greatest beverage that has ever exisited, and I am certain that if I could only drink one type of drink for the rest of my life, I would choose tea. My favourite type of tea is Earl Grey, as it has an amazing flavour. It is named after the 2nd Earl Grey who was a British Prime Minister in the 1830s. It is tea flavoured with bergamot orange, a "flagrant citrus friut" according to Wiki. Although the Earl didn't have a great deal to do with the tea's creation (the recipe was given to him by either a Chinese mandarin, whose son was rescued from drowning by one of Grey's men, or an Indian raja, whose son was rescued from a tiger by one of Grey's men [which to me raises the question of why the Earl gets all the credit]), the tea is now synonymous with him.

There are several reasons why this tea is great. The first is the taste, as I have already mentioned, and also the smell: put the bags to your nose and inhale - a piece of heaven in anyone's books. There are also some medicinal benefits, as detailed by Health24.com:

  • Bergamot has been documented as a useful and healing fruit in 12th century Europe
  • The Italians used bergamot for treating fever and intestinal worms
  • Bergamot's main properties are as a disinfectant and an antidepressant
  • The esters and alcohols present in bergamot reduce anxiety by calming the nervous system
  • The active components in bergamot are antiseptic, germicidal as well as relaxing
  • The catechin and fluoride content of black tea prevent tooth decay, while the antiseptic properties of bergamot can alleviate halitosis and oral infections
  • Contains beneficial amounts of caffeine that helps you to think clearly
  • The bergamot content fights flu, fevers and colds

It tastes great and fights flu...what more could you ask for?
