Life's Little Pleasures #572 - Upgrading my mobile phone

, , ,

It's that time again when I get to upgrade my phone, and after much thought I've gone for the Sony Ericsson C905. As I have an iPod Touch, I didn't think it would be worthing getting an iPhone, or similar, and the lure of the 8.1 mega-pixel camera, Wi-Fi, and GPS was too much to resist. And hey, I'm a Sony Ericsson lover, and it would take a lot for me to look somewhere else.

First impressions are good - the camera is great, though obviously not as good as a stand alone camera with a decent lens. Not only are the photos of high quality, but the video is nice and smooth. I had contemplated getting a video camera, but I won't bother now, as the C905 does the job very well. I have noticed that due to the size of the photos, when they get compressed for media messages, they become pretty unusable. This is putting a dent in my Twitpic addiction, and I'm not sure there's a way around this without taking the photos in a lower resolution, which kind of defeats the object of getting this phone...

The phone does link well with Blogger, and I may have to start using this for posting photos and videos from my phone. You can add other blogs to the phone, but it doesn't seem to like MyOpera :frown: It just sends it an MMS (which has arrived at the time of writing this post), and as my MyOpera cannot remove the operator message, I'm reluctant to do this.

The Wi-Fi on the C905 is excellent, and using Opera Mini with it is superb. The GPS, on the other hand, is not so good, and it doesn't help that the Java version of Google Maps doesn't seem to be compatible with it. It appears to be a known issue, so hopefully there'll be an update to fix this at some point. I didn't expect much from the GPS, but at the moment I'm struggling to see that it'll be useful at all!

Apart from a few niggles, I'm happy with the choice. The camera alone makes it worthwhile for me, as I'm finding myself wanting to take my camera with me more and more. This way, I can carry less, and still take some decent pics. Hopefully the GPS will improve, but this phone should keep me going for a while!

King Me!

I don't mean to belittle people's achievements, but I read this today, and can't help feeling that the resources involved could have perhaps been used for a more important purpose.

After almost two decades, a dozen University of Alberta researchers using hundreds of computers have created a computer program that always wins or ties at the game of checkers.

OK Checkers (or Draughts to me) is a good game, but I never really thought that finding a "solution" to the game was necessary.

Checkers is now solved: perfect play by both sides leads to a draw. This is the most challenging popular game to be solved to date, roughly one million times more complex than Connect Four.

Again that's very good, and deserving of a pat on the back, but was it really worth it? Maybe I'm looking at this from the wrong angle. It is a very impressive feat to get "hundreds" of computers working together to solve the huge amount of permutations and possibilities involved.

The researchers' success will hopefully open people to the concept of solving problems by inventing new techniques to search for the optimal answer, instead of just randomly looking for a needle in a haystack.

It all reminds me of the film War Games where the world is saved by the computer playing itself at Tic-Tac-Toe - a game that also ends in a draw if played perfectly by both sides. Well if this discovery today is used in the same way, then I guess yes, it would have been a very worthwhile use of 2 decades time and effort.

I've been tagg.ed by .ed, who's got a fascination with statistics, and wants to know how people use their mobiles. I would think this was a tad odd, if I didn't share that fascination. Although Ed clearly uses his phone far too much, I do use my phone for a variety of reasons, not just calling.

My phone is the Sony Ericsson Z710i. Like Ed, I'm a Sony Ericsson fan - my last 4 phones have been SEs, and I can't see me changing. Although I'm not particularly pleased with this particular model, it's been solid. I don't usually choose flip phones (this is my first), but I think I got the idea of changing through a phase of watching "24". My next phone won't be a flip - I miss having a decent camera, and my next phone will most likely be the K810i.

On with the statistics!

And now who to tag! Well I know that Furie is a big mobile fan, so I think he'll be interested in this. The same goes for The Good Doctor. Finally, the G man.

Good luck!

The Laptop Challenge

I just posted this in the #Techie Group forum, so I thought 'd post it here too - the more help the better...

Originally posted by me:

I need some help/advice. I have obtained a rather ancient laptop from work (it was being thrown out), and I wish to try to bring it up to date. I need advice on if this is actually possible given its specs, and if so what software would be best to do this.

I'll give you the specs first - feel free to laugh/cry/run away

  • Intel® Pentium® with MMX™ technology at 133MHz
  • 64MB RAM
  • 1.35GB HD
  • 10x CD-ROM
  • 1 USB Port
  • Windows 95
  • 2 PCMCIA slots

The make/model is a Toshiba Satellite Pro 440CDT, and further details can be found here.

Bear in mind that I already have a "decent" laptop, and so this is just something to play with. I do want to make it as "useful" as possible. It'll only be used for Office work/Internet browsing if that's possible. I guess my first port of call is upgrading/changing the OS? Is there anything that will run on these specs? And cost is also an issue - I'm looking for free (or as near to) solutions.

Is there something I can do to this beast to make it useful, apart from using it as a doorstop.

I await your responses - let me know if you need anymore details.
