My Name Is Earl

I love tea. Tea is the greatest beverage that has ever exisited, and I am certain that if I could only drink one type of drink for the rest of my life, I would choose tea. My favourite type of tea is Earl Grey, as it has an amazing flavour. It is named after the 2nd Earl Grey who was a British Prime Minister in the 1830s. It is tea flavoured with bergamot orange, a "flagrant citrus friut" according to Wiki. Although the Earl didn't have a great deal to do with the tea's creation (the recipe was given to him by either a Chinese mandarin, whose son was rescued from drowning by one of Grey's men, or an Indian raja, whose son was rescued from a tiger by one of Grey's men [which to me raises the question of why the Earl gets all the credit]), the tea is now synonymous with him. There are several reasons why this tea is great. The first is the taste, as I have already mentioned, and also the smell: put the bags to your nose and inhale - a piece of heaven in anyone's books. There are also some medicinal benefits, as detailed by Health24.com:
- Bergamot has been documented as a useful and healing fruit in 12th century Europe
- The Italians used bergamot for treating fever and intestinal worms
- Bergamot's main properties are as a disinfectant and an antidepressant
- The esters and alcohols present in bergamot reduce anxiety by calming the nervous system
- The active components in bergamot are antiseptic, germicidal as well as relaxing
- The catechin and fluoride content of black tea prevent tooth decay, while the antiseptic properties of bergamot can alleviate halitosis and oral infections
- Contains beneficial amounts of caffeine that helps you to think clearly
- The bergamot content fights flu, fevers and colds
It tastes great and fights flu...what more could you ask for?
