The Opening Ceremony of the 15th Asian Games Doha 2006

The theme
The 15th Asian Games was opened in Doha, Qatar on Dec.1st, 2006. It was designed to reflect the host city: modern and progressive but based firmly on cultural traditions and beliefs.The theme 'Old and New' reflects Qatar's unique dichotomy - a balance of the natural environment, heritage, culture, traditions, modern lifestyle and architecture, and the distinctive patterns and textures this creates across the land.Old draws from the desert and tribal lifestyle, and the sea where pearling, diving and fishing thrived. New takes in the vibrant and rapid growth of modern Qatar.
The 90-minute performance
The performance could be described by the word "miracle". Performers then played out a story which reflects the growth of Asia told by a Qatari, the Seeker, who navigates his way through the world with the help of a mystical astrolabe. The story contained four parts: the sea of life, signs and wonders of Asian, come back home and the city of future.
The highlight
The Flame Cauldron was lit by Sheikh Mohammad Al-Thani, Captain of the Qatar Equestrian Team, in a breathtaking ride on horse back on steep climb which was the highlight of the opening ceremony. Nobody would conceive this way of igniting the flame cauldron before the opening ceremony, to make a modern performance by the most ancient mothod. It was amazing.
David Atkins——director of the opening ceremony
David Atkins, the creative force behind the 2000 Sydney Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies, had promised an Olympic-class opening for Doha - and he delivered. "This ceremony is far more ambitious and greater in scale and scope than the Sydney ceremony," he said. "This is the most multi-cultural team I have ever assembled. There are performers from more countries than are in the games."
Four Great Stars
a:Jackie Cheung, from Hongkong, is a Chinese influencial entertainer. In 1995 Jacky Cheung received the "Chinese Artist of The World" in Monte Carlo at the World Music Awards. Some people think that he is not specialize in certain music style, however, he almost can perform all kinds of music. In the opening ceremony, he sang the song ‘Together Now’, accompanied by hundreds of drummers as the Games' flag bearers entered the arena.
b:Sunidhi Chauhan, Indian starlet, sang the song ‘Reach out’ as hundreds of children ran into the arena holding white doves, once again symbolising the peaceful nature of the Games. Although she is only 19 years old, she has a performing experience of 15 years.
c:José Carreras, one of the most famous tenorists in the world, gave a concert with Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti at the opening of the World Cup in Rome in 1990. It was originally conceived to raise money for Carreras' foundation. And it was the first time for him to cooperate with Magida El Roumi in the opening ceremony. Magida El Roumi, come from Lebanon, is the artist delegate of Middle East. She is the daughter of the Lebanese musician Halim El Roumi and started her music career in the early 70's when she participated to a TV show Studio al fan and won the gold medal award.
My view
Throughout the whole ceremony, we can feel the generous and open heart of the Qatari. Among the 3,465 organizing staff, about 85 percent came from outside the country. Though the country lacked some professionals who had rich experience of making a large-scale sport ceremony, it was unstinted to retain other countries' famous professionals. The organizers have spent 2.8 billion U.S. dollars on the largest ever Asian Games, which drew more than 10,000 athletes and officials from 45 countries and regions.
The opening ceremony had a vivid theme——peace. It did not told the history of Qatar isolated , but combined firmly with the idea of cultural fusion and peaceful development with other Arab and Asian countries.
The great success of Doha Asian Games opening ceremony implies a great challenge to Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010. A successful ceremony is not only a ceremony, but also gives many information about the country and the world to attract people. There is something we can learn from this opening ceremony is the perfect use of high-tech. Maybe the Organizing Committee of Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 should takes more efforts in this part. And we every Chinese must shoulder this responsibility and offer some suggestion. Let's look forward to Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 together.

My favorite musical instrument——Chinese zither (Guzheng)

From my childhood, I envy the musical instrument players very much. I think it is magical to make people absorbed by their performance. And I hope that one day I can play one kind of musical instruments too.
It was not until 2004——the year I entered the university that I came into contact with Chinese zither(Guzheng). At that time, I heard that a boy in our class was learning zither. It surprised me a lot, because I used to suppose that a girl was more suitable to play zither than a boy. Then I made up my mind to learn zither.
Before I learn zither, I thought it is very difficult for I knew a little about music theory. But after I began, I found it is not so difficult. It needs more and more practices. Maybe some people think that if you have practised more, you will play fair-sounding music. I must tell you that things are not always that simple. Every pieces of music has its own creative background and contains the composer's sentiment. Before you played it, you must know about it. Then you listen to it and try to understand and appreciate. At last, after you have caught its idea, you play it with your own emotion. At that time, I think you will play beautiful music.
My favourite zither music is "High Mountains, Flowing streams". It can be divided into two parts.:the former one is called "High Mountains", the latter one named "Flowing Streams". The most gimmicky point in this music is the flawless combination of these two parts. If you listening to it in a quiet environment, with your eyes closed, you may think that you are just sitting on the top of a high mountain, and streams are gurgling beside you. What a beautiful scene it is! Every time I palyed zither, I can heard the voice of peace from the cockles of my heart.
About this classical composition, there is an ancient story between Boya and Ziqi. Yu Boya was accomplished at playing zither while Zhong Ziqi had the best appreciating ability. When Yu Boya was playing a piece of music representing the broadening of the mind on top of a high mountain, Zhong Ziqi commented, “Grand! High and steep, lofty as Mt. Tai!” When Yu Boya was playing a piece of music displaying the artistic conception of the flowing rivers, Zhong Ziqi sighed, “Sublime, vast and mighty, just like the Yangtze river flowing to the sea day and night!” Noticing that Zhong Ziqi grasped his thoughts every time he played, Yu Boya couldn’t help sighing, “Your ability to appreciate qin music has peaked. What you realized was exactly what I wanted to express. I can not hide any of my emotions before you.” And when ziqi died, boya never played his zither any longer. So "High Mountains, Flowing streams" implies the meaning of "bosom friend" today.
Now it is nearly one year that I have not played zither, because of my study. If I have more free time in the future, I will play zither again. For my part, "Without music, life would be an error."

My View On "The Joy Luck Club"

When I saw the name of the movie "The Joy Luck Club",I thought it would be a comedy story. But in fact, it is not.
The Joy Luck Club, as stated in the movie's opening narrative, is a collection of four aging Chinese women bound together more by hope than joy or luck. The four women - Suyuan, Lindo, Ying Ying, and An Mei - came to America many years ago to escape China's feudal society for the promise of the United States' democracy. Now, however, Suyuan has died and the three surviving members of the club invite her daughter June to take her place. June belongs to the "new" generation, those of Chinese heritage who grew up speaking English and learning American customs. Also of roughly the same age are Waverly, Lindo's daughter; Lena, Ying Ying's daughter; and Rose, An Mei's daughter. The Joy Luck Club tells of the varied difficulties and tragedies involved in these mother/daughter relationships.
At the beginning of the movie, June said: "What could I tell them? I didn't know anything about her (her refer to her mother)." When I heard this, I was shocked. "How can a daughter not know her own mother?" Yes, that is right, how can a daughter not know her own mother? That is weird and unbelievable. Right? Maybe we think that June is wrong, she must be condemned. However, as a matter of fact, most of us act as June does. When we are celebrating our birthday, how many children would remember their mother's birthday and know that the day is a suffering day for his/her mother? Having seen this film, I feel that I really know little about my mother. I am ashamed of myself. In the future, I think I should do something for her.
"A mother, mother can never give up her hope for her own children."This sentence also touches me deeply. It reminds me of a story I read on the internet several days ago. The dramatis personae is a drugger. That is the third time for him to go into the drug rehabilitation center. We can imagine what kind of torture that his mother is suffering, however, instead of giving him up, his mother still cares him a lot and goes to see him from time to time, bringing food that he likes most. At last, he is inspired by his mother and refrains from drugs. So how great mother love is! Whoever you are, you are her child only. She is the only one that would loves you forever.
Three generations, have sixteen separate stories. Because of growing up in different environments, daughters and mothers have different experiences. They have to endure the impact between two kinds of culture and value concept. They care each other very much, at the same time, they do mutual harm; they have deep and clinging relationship feelings with each other, but they also have the feeling of hate and alienation. But what exceeds everything is the affectionateness between mothers and daughters. Because blood is thicker than water.
