My view on university teacher
Friday, 5. January 2007, 14:20:16
Before I came to the university, many people told me that students were totally free in the university, teachers would not force them to do anything. At that time, I did not believe it because I thought that was impossible. And now I am personally in the situation, I realize what it really means. Yes, as a university student, we are more free now. That is because we have grown up, we have independent thinking and the ability of making a clear distinction between right and wrong. Our teachers trust on us, so they do not need to supervise us every moment.
University teachers, are not just our teachers, most of the time they are our friends in some ways. The chances of having generation gap between universiy teachers and students are slim. When we want to share our happiness, we can parttake with our teachers. When something sorrowful or miserable happen, we can turm to our teachers for help. They have lots of experience, and will comfort us by some doable advices. Even when we do not agree with some views of our teachers, we can debate with them. The purpose of the argumentation is not to choose the winner and the loser, but to quest for better solution. I think this kind of communication can promote the realationship between university teachers and students, which makes them look like friends.
What university teachers teach is not just the knowledge in the textbook. Usually they focus more on how to be a good man and the truth in life. People always say that: The university is an ivoty tower and a part of the society. Students should learn everything that is useful for their future. One of the most effective way is to be told by teachers.
Therefore, the function of university teachers is to assist students to discover their potential. A good teacher does not need to tell the students the correct answer, but he should lead them to think. Results are not so important as the process.
Well, there is also something bad about university teachers. Some teachers do not know any names of his students even when the term comes to the end. Or maybe just few of them. I suppose these teachers should try hard.
Being a university teacher is not a facile thing, it calls for profound knowledge, patience and good ways of expressing. So I wish them happy and luck.
