Happy Birthday, Dad!

,

We had a family gathering in Zion National Park to celebrate Dad's birthday. It snowed the day we got there which laid a beautiful blanket of snow across the valley and highlighted the ridgetops and tree branches with glittering snow. Had a good time hiking around - Emerald Pools (all three), Bryce Canyon NP, and 3/4 the way up Angel's Landing (snow & ice turned us back). This was also Owen's first experience with snow.

Happy Birthday, Dad! Enjoy the 7.5 minute video of our 4-day vacation.

China

, ,

Here are a few of my favorite pictures from a trip to China, 14-31 October 1999. I took this vacation with my parents, brother, and a few other family members while I was in the Peace Corps. You may think - a vacation from Peace Corps? Contrary to what many think, Peace Corps isn't a synonym with "vacation".

My Aunt Marji organized this trip. As the librarian for UCLA's Asian American Library, her research has focused on Chinese minority groups and this trip was put together to witness the traditions, lifestyles, and art of some of these groups before they disappear. China is a big country with a culturally diverse population. As China "progresses", as with almost all modern countries, it seems it's people and cultures are homogenized (this is true for ecological systems, too). Old traditions and cultural practices unique to various geographic regions of China are disappearing. I don't think this is unique to China's development, but it seems especially disappointing to lose cultures who's roots date back, by my understanding, over many millenia. Cities we visited included Guangzhou, Dali, Lijjiang, Chengdu, Lhasa, Chongquing, the Yangtze River, Yichang, and Wuhan. Some of these cities had traditional practices still being used and some were preserved as demonstrations for tourists only.

Here are some of my pictures from this trip:
