Memories and moments by Serola, part 3

This is getting interesting. I finally found an explanation I can accept:

If (...) the owner of a website uses in-line linking to display an image rightfully posted on another site, the courts have held that no copyright infringement has taken place. -IT Law Wiki

Like other Wikis, this can not be treated as 100% reliable source, but it pretty much summarize what many other sources say less clearly.

And since in-line linking has happened inside MyOpera server, it is also not "hot linking" in the sense as it is usually understood. There's no bandwidth used any more than me displaying the same image anywhere else around MyOpera. Moreover, there's no risk that the author (me in this case) would replace the image with malicious content since each image gets unique address at MyOpera albums and can't be switched into another by client.

This means I owe an apology to Salim Akhtar for accusing him on copyright infringement, and to MyOpera admins for wasting everyone's time o

What a honor! I got flattered by most sincere compliment. My picture became "shared" by someone else. First I got upset and wasted a lot of time to find out how to report it as a copyright infringement. But then I was pretty much told I'm fighting against windmills and I don't even have a case to fight for. Instead it's just perfectly legal sharing made possible by service provider. So, instead of crying out "WOLF!", I should feel honored and thankful for getting such publicity. Besides, thanks to hot-linking and backlink, nothings actually stolen. I guess I was just naive and old-fashioned. And instead of making any more fuss about copyrights, I share this nice experience of being shared:

Testing 'Share on MyOpera' feature available on albums. It seems that it is made very easy to republish pictures. The only problem is that it is also an easy way to republish without permission pictures taken by others.

No time to edit

,

I found this interesting story today:

Jasper Johns early artworks question how we look at, perceive and make art. He does not distinguish between subject and object in his work, or art and life for that matter. In his eyes they are both the same thing. Johns believes that we should not look upon a painting as a representation or illusion but as an object with its own reality. -John MacTaggart

That made me think my own photography from totally different perspective. I like to photograph my everyday life on daily bases. But do I really want to represent it? Or do I rather want to create something "with its own reality"? I guess both. I still like to become a better documentary photographer. But I also want to seek new ways to see things. Or even create new things.

I have somewhat learned enough basic editing and want to learn something new. But as always I'm lazy, or I have no time to do more complex editing step by step. So, I decided to try ready made scripts and see what they are good for. The challenge is to find good subject for the script, and vice versa, good script for the subject. So, less step by step editing in the near future and more use of ready made scripts. And maybe some day I find time to learn how to do fancy script myself.

But that's only what is going to happen here on my personal albums. At Shoot & Tell I still of course use only what rules of that group say. It's actually very much like Jekyll & Hide. Here I learn sorcery but at S&T I study mastery.

Daily pictures

,

It has become more popular to have daily picture albums on personal blogs. Currently I follow these albums:

Do notice these peeps may create a new daily pictures album either every 6 or 12 months. I also may have forgot someone and will update this list if I discover new albums or updates. I have subscribed to all of those albums I have found, to follow what new is going on.

And if you wish to create a sticky post like this, where you have your latest picture uploads displayed, then have a look at Furie's excellent tutorial.

EDIT: New list updated at http://my.opera.com/serola/blog/2012/01/02/daily-pictures-2012
