Yesterday I got to take pictures of another concert for Under Dusken. This time Fatty Sunroad, a band from Volda, was playing in Knaus at Samfundet. Maybe it wasn't the best acoustics ever (probably because it was a quite small room) and the lighting was definitely one of the worst I have ever seen (I often had to resort to ISO6400 at f/1.4 - that is DARK dark) but nonetheless it was a fun concert and they certainly have some quite good tunes up their sleeves
Emily and I went to the cathouse again to clean and help and test the 5D a little. Alright, it was me who tested the camera while Emily was more into the helping thing. But I tried to get some photos and possibly video shots for the cathouse blog. So I finally had the chance to test the image quality and the autofocus and such in a real life situation - neither let me down. There is quite some improvement over the 40D. First of all, the 5D is a fullframe camera which means that the sensor has the same size as good old analog film cameras. So all the lenses are working just as they are meant to work (e.g. a 50mm lens is really a 50mm lens) plus one can achieve a more shallow depth of field which is a feature I was longing for for a long time. This is really an important creative tool because it allows to get rid of distracting backgrounds and such by blurring them beyond reason and/or selectively put the focus and attention on one detail of a scene. The next thing is that this camera has 21MP! First I thought I was not going to need that anyway (and the truth is nobody really does unless you print in real big sizes) but the amount of detail this camera can resolve is just stunning. I can easily see myself in the eyes of the cats I took pictures of today and you can literally count the single hairs in the cats' faces! And then there is the ability to shoot in very low light without too much distracting noise. The shot to the right was taken in very dim conditions in a very ill-lit corner of a room with two small windows. I had to use ISO6400 (!) to get a good exposure at f/1.8 and the result is simply amazing! Oh and did I mention that I can capture high definition video at 1080p and 30fps?
Weeehaaaaa! I switched to the next level of Canon DSLR cameras and got myself a 5D Mark II. This was the first fullframe camera that could record video as well - in 1920x1080 pixels by the way and in ISO6400 if one wishes (that being said, make sure you watch the sample in HD and fullscreen)!
So the last two days I joined Lars on his daily evening trips downtown to test the video mode a little. Nothing fancy, just me toying around. Maybe you'll like it anyway and I hope I can provide some higher quality content soon
I followed Lars around Trondheim for some street photography. This is basically just me trying the movie mode of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II - so nothing fancy by any means. Lenses used were Canon 50mm f/1.4 and Tokina 12-24mm f/4.
This week, I spent my Saturday at a student soccer tournament that I was covering for Under Dusken (at least I spent the whole day either taking pictures or editing them, or stepping into wet things, of which one can find quite a few these autumn days here in Trondheim). I found it INCREDIBLY hard to get some good action shots, simply before everything on a soccer field is moving so darn fast. Which means that my usual figuring light, composition, perspective, focus, ... approach is quite useless. Anyway, was good fun and I think I got one or two good shots
I got to take the cover shot for Under Dusken's current issue. I have to give Marius credit for the underlying idea with the puppet and the hat. It's about the fact that amateurs are partly used as security at the three weeks lasting UKA festival in Trondheim. Current (and old) issues of Under Dusken can always be found at www.underdusken.no
