Floppy paperweight

, ,

I'm working on a Saturday again and while i was walking through the office i saw that one colleague had a floppy disk cable on his desk. It then occurred to me that i don't even own a floppy disk drive anymore, so i promptly asked him why he needs it. The answer was stranger then the fact that he had a floppy disk cable.

He told me he found it in the office and he's using it as a paperweight, the answer not only sounded sincere, but also logical. It also evoked some memories of when we where young running around with floppy disk loaded with small games like Mario, Lotus and others. Nowadays i can carry around me a full length feature film, music too last me for a couple of days without ever hearing the same song twice and so much more. My how technologies has evolved....

P.s. The strangest thing was that while searching for a cartoon to illustrate this post, i could only find 8 pictures, most of the time i found more then 7 pages of 8 pictures each, so my floppy disk friend may you rest in pieces.

Interestingly enough, sometimes I find the bests things will searching for something completely different, like one winter while i was looking for my scarf i found my swimming trunks and in the summer i found the gloves and scarf while searching for my...yes you guessed it.

This little movie above is just a trailer go check out the rest at Drawn By Pain it's really worth it, really cool stuff.

Life sometimes behaves like a little kid knocking on your door on Halloween saying:"Trick or treat". Why do i say this? Well oportunity was knocking on my door recently saying "Trick or treat", but i just ignored it and didn't open the door at all, the next morning i found my house TP-ed

If you have no clue what i'm talking about, let me tell you that i hadhave a plan for when i'll finally graduate. Today though i found out that just yesterday somebody launched a website which is based on the exact same idea as i had before. Now if i've learned anything from Project Managment classes then it's the fact that one must study the market and the competition.

The launch of this website means that i have the oportunity to watch it grow and learn from it's mistakes, on the other hand it also means that the competition got a head start.

No mather, i shall watch that website carefully and learn from it, so that when i finnally release my creation to the public it will much better.

File Access

, ,

Back in the early days of Opera 9, i was very excited about one feature in particular, widgets. I was so excited that I imediatly signed-up to my Opera just so that i could submit one.

In those days i was very eager to created widgets and test out all the things it could offer. I never got past 2 small widgets, because the biggest widget i was working on at that time turned out to rely on a bug which allowed access to the file system.

As soon as i had my prototype done, Opera pushed out a new version and i was left hanging. I tried to use signed java applets but it turned out that didn't work at all, so eventually i gave up completly on widgets.

Fast forward to this morning, when Opera published an article on Dev.Opera entitled File I/O API which describes a new mechanism to read, write files with a widget. It's an interesting read maybe i'll try it out on the new beta.

What did I do?

,

Yesterday i told you i was going to give a presentation. I was looking forward to it in the weekend, then as the day of the presentation drew ever closer, i realized that i wasn't going to finish the application i wanted to present. So did a 180 and decided to show what the platform i was going to use can actually do and showcase how fast and easy it is. Time was short so i created a very small application which could open, save text files. Wow how amazing right? Anyway, my presentation was pretty okey, at the end everybody was comming up to me and telling me how good it was. Maybe it had to do with the fact that I was the most energetic person presentationg and because i was moving a lot. All in all i think it was a good presentation, i enjoyed every minute of it.

Top of the Morning to Ya

Today i shall be giving a presentation about Adobe AIR and when i woke up i decided to shave. That turned out to be not as easy as it sounds.

I never really learned how to shave, one day i just picked up a blade and started "shaving", i always hated it because i can never get the left side right. I always start out with the right side and i can usually get it nice and smooth without cutting myself, but then when i have to go to the "other" side it's not as easy anymore, if i turn my head so that i can see what I'm doing like with the right side, i quickly discover that i can't see anything.

This is just like clipping my nails, but there it's the other way around, i can do a great job on my left hand but when it comes to cutting the nails on my right hand i always need to hold the clippers with my shirt or something otherwise i can't do it.

Now that's the impossible task of shaving is done, i can go and hold my presentation looking good. Wish me good luck.

Working on a Monday

Unlike working on a saturday, you can't get around not showing up on a Monday. I for one kind of feel like a Monday is more productive then a Saturday.

Monday is the first day of the week(at least where I'm from) and as such is a real blast. It's even better when it's raining outside like today, then you are really motivated to work and work some more.

On the other hand, Monday is good because you can make some plans for what will happen during this week. I for example just got a confirmation email, which means i shall be giving another presentation. This time though it will be for my university so i think there will be no screen cast :frown: I'm really excited about giving another presentation the only downside is that i am supposed to give a presentation about an application I'm building, but at this moment the application does not exist yet.

What does this mean? Well it means I've got 2 days to create a small demo and the slides. Wish me good luck.

Working on a Saturday

,

There is nothing more worse then working on a Saturday or is there? I do not know why but Saturday always feels different, even if I'm at work it's not like the other days.

The best thing about working on Saturday is that you can start each sentence with the words " working on Saturday" and finish it off by saying "the weather is too good to work, so i think i'll just skip it", but then you are somehow reminded that you should do something so you open up your tools and start working.

Even though Friday is a slow day too, it's not as special as Saturday, so I sometimes feel i can get more done on a Friday then on a Saturday.

With that said I leave you with one advice: DO NOT WORK ON SATURDAY or if you have to, then hurry up so you can go home sooner.

Stop Ignoring people!

, ,

A long time ago i wrote about my standard issue headphones, which where mono. Today I'm happy to report that i bought a brand new set of stereo headphones. The good thing is that now i finally can listen to my own music and get into the "zone", the bad part is that i miss the jokes and can't see when someone wants me to help them.

Up until now i always had one ear free to listen to the people around me, which was good and bad at the same time, now i'm completly isolated in my own little world.

So the question is: Is it better to be isolated or is it better to be a part of the world?

Cursing at Work

,

Do you curse at your job? Do you curse at all? What do you think about people who curse loudly at your workplace.

I for one find it very disturbing to hear people curse out loud. I for one never curse, but I found it really demoralizing when people start cursing because they do not understand something and then when all things fail start saying that they can not do this any longer.

Even though I admire the person who says he can't do something any longer, and yet still continues to torture himself by continuing to work on the same task instead of giving up or asking for help. It takes willpower to not curse and it also takes knowledge to know when to ask for help and to know when to accept help.

If someone offers to help you to overcome an obstacle, then don't just start talking at 90miles an hour describing your situation, that doesn't help anybody.

All i'm trying to say is that by cursing alot you are not only not getting anything done, but you also prevent other people from getting things done, because they start looking at you and waiting for you to calm down.

P.S.
This article isn't necesarily about you, but it wouldn't hurt for you too be more cool and calm.
