Top of the Morning to Ya

Today i shall be giving a presentation about Adobe AIR and when i woke up i decided to shave. That turned out to be not as easy as it sounds.

I never really learned how to shave, one day i just picked up a blade and started "shaving", i always hated it because i can never get the left side right. I always start out with the right side and i can usually get it nice and smooth without cutting myself, but then when i have to go to the "other" side it's not as easy anymore, if i turn my head so that i can see what I'm doing like with the right side, i quickly discover that i can't see anything.

This is just like clipping my nails, but there it's the other way around, i can do a great job on my left hand but when it comes to cutting the nails on my right hand i always need to hold the clippers with my shirt or something otherwise i can't do it.

Now that's the impossible task of shaving is done, i can go and hold my presentation looking good. Wish me good luck.

Stop Ignoring people!

A long time ago i wrote about my standard issue headphones, which where mono. Today I'm happy to report that i bought a brand new set of stereo headphones. The good thing is that now i finally can listen to my own music and get into the "zone", the bad part is that i miss the jokes and can't see when someone wants me to help them.

Up until now i always had one ear free to listen to the people around me, which was good and bad at the same time, now i'm completly isolated in my own little world.

So the question is: Is it better to be isolated or is it better to be a part of the world?

Cursing at Work

,

Do you curse at your job? Do you curse at all? What do you think about people who curse loudly at your workplace.

I for one find it very disturbing to hear people curse out loud. I for one never curse, but I found it really demoralizing when people start cursing because they do not understand something and then when all things fail start saying that they can not do this any longer.

Even though I admire the person who says he can't do something any longer, and yet still continues to torture himself by continuing to work on the same task instead of giving up or asking for help. It takes willpower to not curse and it also takes knowledge to know when to ask for help and to know when to accept help.

If someone offers to help you to overcome an obstacle, then don't just start talking at 90miles an hour describing your situation, that doesn't help anybody.

All i'm trying to say is that by cursing alot you are not only not getting anything done, but you also prevent other people from getting things done, because they start looking at you and waiting for you to calm down.

P.S.
This article isn't necesarily about you, but it wouldn't hurt for you too be more cool and calm.

I don't know why but this struck a cord somewhere deep inside me. I really love this clip, watch it for yourself and tell me what you think.

Project Management Exam

, ,

As i stated yesterday today i had a project management exam. I just got back from it and i'm happy to report that I've passed it, even though my "deliverable" weren't exactly right.

I had to redo the risk management part and draw up a contingency plan. The project i had to do this for has no real risk, if i don't do it it's not the world. So it was very hard to come up with the minimum of 4 risk and the contingency plans for them.

All is well that ends well so...with that I am happy to report another great success

Project Management

You know what's interesting? I have a project managment course. I never went to the course, because of work and all that, but tomorow i've got the exam and for it i had to compile a list of documents which included:

a. Requirements (functional)
b. PBS (product breakdown structure)
c. PFD (product flow diagram)
d. GANTT diagram (using Microsoft Excel)
e. Risk mitigation plan and risk contingency plan
f. Quality plan
g. Business case

Now if you look at that list, which one of those looks familiar? Requirements of course, maybe GANTT, maybe the Business case?Well to me everything except the first two I mentioned where a big unknow.

After some digging i found out that the course is about PRINCE2 and after some more digging i came to the conclusion that this prince2 is more suited for a corporate enviroment and yet here i was asked to compile a lot of "deliverables" for a project which will be open sourced and has just one developer.

As i was writting the risk mitigation plan, i was looking around for risks and it was hard to find the 3 of them. I mean the project is an educational one, i am the only developer, i'm doing it in my spare time, using the resources that are available to me for free.

So I am asking: Is PRINCE 2 an overkill for such a small project?

JavaScript: The Good Parts

, ,

I just finished reading JavaScript: The Good Parts, Douglas Crockford's first book on Javascript.

This book unlike AjaxTCR, which i highly recommend, this book is aimed more at novice javascript programmers. I originally got it because it was written by Douglas Crockford who in the days in which i was just learning the language had a huge impact on me.

I never had a role model before I saw some of his presentations on YUI Theater, but the way he presented the language i was trying so hard to learn, convinced me he could be a good choice if I ever decide to have one.

It took me only two hours to read the whole thing, It's something i would like to call a light reading. Even though Crockford recently has been complaining about the language and this book is just another example of him complaining.

As the title says the book only shows the "good" parts of Javascript at first and then at the end in the Apendixes he covers some of the "bad" parts.

As a conclusion I have to say that the book itself was good and i really enjoyed reading it, but it wasn't as big as AjaxTCR and it didn't manage to convince me, i still thing the language itself isn't as bad as he claims, then again i don't have his experience so i might be wrong.

Pen and papper

, ,

Today i had an exam. This post isn't going to be about that though, no sir, in this little post i will talk about how it's getting harder and harder to write somethihng with a pen. A long time ago people only wrote on papper and used a pen or a pencil(or something else if we go back even more), but now adays a keyboard is just around a corner.

I mean even my phone has a qwerty keyboard and when ever i'm asked to take notes i don't hesitate and just whip that bad boy out and start "writting" or better said typing. Today though i had to use a pen and papper and while i was writting away i was looking at my own handwriting and marveling how all the letters look the same.

The m's looks like an n's, the o's and a's look like u's. I had this problem ever since i started to activly use a computer and stop using papper and pen. I always was like:we need to written an essay for English class? No problem let me fire up my MS Word or OpenOffice Writter and give me a few hours to type it in and print it out so it's no wonder that my handwritting is chicken scratch.

Then again maybe this shouldn't worry me, in the worst case scenario I could just buy a portable printer and print from my phone.....

Tired

,

The night before yesterday i told you that i was going fishing. A day after the event I can safely say that i'm tired. It was fun, I caught some nice fishies, tried to play with a dog all in all a very fun day.

In the begining there was one very eager beaver who at 7:23 woke up thinging he was going to be late for the fishing trip, that of course was me. Since i was up so early i made a few sandwiches.

After a long car ride we finally arrived at the lake and started the search for the perfect spot. Since it was the 1st of May and everybody had the day of the lake was full and finding a spot proved to be quite difficult.

But then we stopped and unapcked, it was then we remembered that we forgot to buy worms...and everybody knows you can't fish without worms...so we started to digg. Luckyly though a dude walked up to us and we bought a whole bunch of worms from him so the problem was solved.

Pretty soon though we realized that the spot we had choosen for fishing wasn't so great after all because the water was shallow and full of muck so we packed everything back up and went off to find another spot.

After quite awhile we found a new spot and pretty soon the fish where just jumping out of the water. We fished all day long and before we even noticed it was getting harder and harder to see the worm to put it on the hook or the "float".

To end this post i have to say that even thought fishing is considered to be the perfect way to relax I always find that it always tires me out and leaves me in a "low battery" state so i'll update the fishing 2008 album and go and sleep.

Have fun people and enjoy the rest of the day.

Just a few hours ago as i was lounging on a couch watching "The Apprentice", browsing the world wide web with my Opera Mobile browser. Then just as I closed it, my phone rang and since i've got a smart phone which can display contact photos I imediatly saw that the was calling.

A million things went through my mind. Did i finish my work today? Did I upload those files? Did I forget to fix that SQL error? Then somehow my brain told my finger to press the answer button so I picked up.

We got down to the point and before I could say "bob's your uncle" I agreed to another fishing trip. As far as I gathered i'm gona be the only person from work at this little trip so it will be interesting to see what happens.

So I do not know what people say when they go fishing so all I can say is that I hope I can catch something bigger then last time.
