File Access

, ,

Back in the early days of Opera 9, i was very excited about one feature in particular, widgets. I was so excited that I imediatly signed-up to my Opera just so that i could submit one.

In those days i was very eager to created widgets and test out all the things it could offer. I never got past 2 small widgets, because the biggest widget i was working on at that time turned out to rely on a bug which allowed access to the file system.

As soon as i had my prototype done, Opera pushed out a new version and i was left hanging. I tried to use signed java applets but it turned out that didn't work at all, so eventually i gave up completly on widgets.

Fast forward to this morning, when Opera published an article on Dev.Opera entitled File I/O API which describes a new mechanism to read, write files with a widget. It's an interesting read maybe i'll try it out on the new beta.

Update

,

These last weeks have been a real pain in the beehive. All i did was work...work and more work. Furtunatly things are getting back to normal soon, in a day or two i will be back online explaining what, why and when(clients, friends and so one will be asking these questions) i dissapered for so long.

Anyway let's talk about something more interesting. A since i find widgets interesting i think i can tell you that Word aka Tmchenry and i have teamed up and create a new opera user called Wydgamic Duo and we shall post the widgets we make togheter under that name. I also should state that pretty soon you are going to know this name pretty well because we are working on a realy cool widget. You can except an alfa version at the and of next week.

That's it for widget related news. Now for some personal news. I have decided to start a new album and post screenshots of sites i make at work or as a freelancer. You might ask me why i don't post links.I don't post links because i can't. Most sites once done are out of my hands and therefor i don't know where they are hosted. Currently i'm having some fun with the google maps api at work..so that should be interesting.

This is about it for this edition of shadow's ramblings.

p.s. I will post a new entry soon...detailing what happend after the world ended

Blog, blog, blood

, , , ...

I was sitting in front of my computer last night, working on my latest widget, and i thought it was time to post something here too. You can't imagine how Manny times this last week i pressed the add New post button, only to hit ht back button once i wrote 2 or 3 lines, but not this time  this time I'm gonna press the save button :D

Anyway, let us look around and see what we can talk about.
1) Well there is my new widget which will be something really new and interesting, but i still need to learn the how to use the widget prefs for it :frown: so it might not be done for Monday .
2) Then there is that whole competition thing  I have submitted the comic Widget(that Word made) like 2 times already only to be beaten by "you-know-who", and while i can admit that his widgets are really interesting and look great, i still can't help not noticing the fact that they are not really useful. I mean sure you can play for like 2 hours at work, to make time go by faster...but what does it all amount to?I don't mean that the widgets or the creator is a bad thing/person, but they are not what widgets ar all about. In my mind widgets should provide some useful little services which otherwise would not be so easy to access. Like the Pandora radio, that is useful...kind of or the touchtheSky which is also useful(it can't find my city though :frown: ). But enough ranting about widgets, and there purpose.
3) I could also talk about work, and the fact that i mean kind of tired, but that would be too long of a post so will skip that

That's about ti for now, if i manage to finish my widget, which i hope will be the case, then i shall post again. The widget will have it's own little post detailing some things like:how to use it and on how to take the best part out of it and use it in your widget. Who ever sad that widgets can't read local files was surely not knowing what one could do with allot of time and some common sense

I would also like to invite everybody who is reading this to post a comment, so that i can estimate how big my audience is(bigger or smaller then 3 people  ). You don't need to post something meaningfull just a "+1" would be enough

Thank you for reading this and be sure to check back in like 11 hours, when i think i shall post my widget related article
