Your Network Playing Space Invaders

Just seen this on TechCrunch, NetQoS has developed a fun way for network administrators to view network performance. The program Netcosm monitors all traffic running through a network and then it creates a cool array of game like displays.

Attack of the Cursors

Microsoft is investigating claims that the way Windows handles alternatives to the standard arrow cursor could leave users PC's open to attack. It's revealed that by booby trapping a website or sending malicious code by email could allow user PC's to be hijacked.

New GNOME

For the past year I have been using Linux but only in a part time basis. I find it a joy to use but a pain to get the Internet working because I use a USB adapter to connect to the wireless router at home. This aside I have become an avid user of the GNOME visual environment and tend to use Linux distributions that uses it. So now the GNOME team has come out with GNOME 2.18 which is a great improvement. I really like the Glass effect icons and background and so am looking forward to getting it and using it. I tend not to use KDE which is the other big visual system that Linux uses. I find that KDE is not as clean looking as GNOME and the desktop looks messy and disorganised. Don't get me wrong KDE is great but GNOME is my favourite.

Vista Home Basic

All the reviews I have read about Vista Home Basic have been quite harsh. Each of the reviews say that Vista Home Basic is pointless and will only be used by basic users which is a fair point. Home Basic is a stripped down version of the more superior versions such as Home Premium and Ultimate and it doesn't include the Aero visual system and the hard drive encryption system. Personally I don't want to be sitting flipping Windows around and worrying about wether or not my hard drive is encrypted and so Vista Home Basic seems a viable replacement to XP, although I will be keeping XP on my machine for a bit longer.

Hosting Blues

As I write this entry my host seems to be down again! For the past few days any attempt to contact my website shanecassidy.com have failed. I'm not really happy because there are some maintenance tasks I'd like to carry out! I have emailed my host on many occasions trying to get the issue resolved. Last Sunday I got a reply saying that they were looking into the problem but I have not had reply saying that they had resolved the issue. I will keep trying....

In an unusal move BAE Systems subsidiary Insyte, the UK’s sole provider of warship command systems, has decided to standardise on Windows 2000. The new Royal Navy Type45 destroyers will be fitted with Windows 2000. Torbay, an attack submarine has also been retrofitted Windows 2000 command systems and as time goes by Windows 2000 will be fitted to all of the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet.
