Top Ten New English Words #3

It's been a lot of time since I've written second part of this neverending soap opera, sure. And along with the time goes always problems that need to be soluted. For example, I could write about the class appointment (yea, 'appointment' seems accurate - but in case it's not understandable, I mean those regular quarter-year meetings of professors and students' parents) and how terrible was the impact of them, but I will not.

Instead of it, I will link to my wannabe essay on Roald Dahl's "Taste and other tales" published by Penguin Readers, which implies the level of difficulty and number of gained new words.

However, the essay itself made me look for new ones, in order to keep my speech cultivated and not in that classic way like "Roald Dahl wrote a book. Huh." And it was not only that homework we were assigned; also the debate (and the workshop on topic "That Europe should abandon the concept of welfare state") had given me a thump... Plus I started to read "Catcher in the rye".

Therefore, although this post is tagged with "five new english words", they're ten. That should give you a proper image of what my words and promisses are like.

By the way, I am celebrating my nameday today! Whee! (According to catholic calendar, it's day of St. Simon and Juda. That's enough for me to take this chance and get something!)

Hereby I present you five new words I learnt in the meantime...

Vindicate - to prove something to be true. First I heard it in Sting's nonsensical single Inside, and it's been reminded to me when I read vocabulary in Matrix: Upper-intermediate classbook. It'll come handy - aren't debates about proving and disproving?

Contemporarily - an adverb deduced from word "contemporary" (meaning something which is now going on). Of course, it's there because of spelling. And the lenght. And "no-one-will-understand-it" reason is present there, too p: (Yep, and I like adverbs.)

Auxilliary - if it's noun, then it means assistant, as adjective it's something like helpful. It is deformation from Czech version of Scrabble of course - that I seek for every word which has 'x' in its spelling and is usable... but that's not relevant.

Apt - competent. This word was exactly the one I missed to complete the "Planets riddle"
(Off-topic: You don't know the "Planets riddle"? Really? Well, the point is to make 92 words using the letters P, L, A, N, E, T and S. Plurals and so on do count, names do not.)

Anniversary - day that's once a year... jubilee... or something like that. I don't know why this word seems pretty to me... But still, it is.

And that's all, folks.

I was intending (heh) to do this for really, really long time. (First time, it was in June, I think.) However, I present it you now - which points straight to my laziness. Heh.

To write out new English words? Our teacher thinks it's a duty - but we know almost all the words she teaches us. However, I want to write out top five new words, that exceed by amazing prettiness or extraordinary spelling or just that they have caught my eye. Heh.

So, let us begin.

Acquainted - means something like familiar - that you know that person, you were introduced or he/she was introduced to you, but nothing else... First time I saw it, when I was viewing specifications of XFN (XFN on en.wiki); Second time I saw it, when I randomly opened Pride & Prejudice - and by the way, it does still popup in there - and third time, I used it in conversation with Fifth.

{27.9.2006, 16:45:44} Shippy: even in that improbable case i would be acquainted (damn, i hate that word. if there is anything that's worth remembering, it's *not* right spelling of this fscking adjective) to Shee, i would not guess right. (with probability which equals probability of Red Dwarf being smashed, which is one to... one.)
{27.9.2006, 16:48:39} Fifth: xD nice.. I don't really know that f*cking word .. hehe .) maybe, you would.. Ok. So just wait.. There is a pretty good chance, that you will soon find out .)

As you have probably guessed, yes, this world is chosen because of its spelling. Don't you like it? (I do not.)

Now, three words from my biggest word resource will follow? What do you think? ...of course. Song lyrics.

Bliss - extreme happiness. It's used in Tori Amos' nonsensical lyrics named equally, Bliss. I like it... well, it's because of the way Tori pronounces it. Something like "bleece". And sometimes, while my mood is away on lunch, I can even imagine myself using this word without monstrous sarcasm.

Imposter - the cheater. From A Sorta Fairytale. I like the sound of it.

Crucify - to kill somebody on the cross, that's the thing which happened to Jesus. Tori Amos' song called Crucify. I like the sound of it, I like the spelling. I'm looking forward to using it in some bwhehe pacific bwhehehehe story bwhehehehehehe.

And last but not least...

Insight - understanding. Used somewhere in Ufajr's Broken lyrics, and pretty many other places. Insight is typographically (well, that's another word :D ) nice - and it has a nice meaning, too. Short story.

Tomorrow I might write something about complications with using 'alone' in lyrics. To be specific, how cliche of alone's context makes impossible to use it in any thoughtful way.
