Forest floor

Between suburbia and cemetery there is a green heaven beneath the tall pine trees. Whole hillside flourishes every summer, full of lilies and all kinds of shrub.

Yes, it is Deb happy

One of our most common conifers here is the Eastern Hemlock. When there are lots of them... enough to form a grove or forest, there's no undergrowth whatsoever. I thought it was interesting that your conifer grove had so much undergrowth.

Here's a photo of one of our hemlock forests.

der WandersmannderWandersmann Thursday, June 7, 2012 5:15:14 PM

The shade doesn't look all that dense, Deb, not enough to shade out the undergrowth ... I've been looking as hard as I can, but hemlock doesn't seem to put out growth-inhibitors, the way walnuts do, so there must be some other agents at work. Do crews go through, "weeding"?

Pine forest is a different from larch and spruces. Pine trees does not drop their leaves that would cover the ground, and pines also let more light to reach the ground. And maybe there are also some other reasons (minerals etc.).

Nevertheless, the Finnish pine forest usually always have some understory (new word learned http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Dance.gif - ).

I neglected to say, Sami, before the conversation turned to other matters, that these are really nice shots. It's interesting how negative and positive space get muddled in the vertical shot.
