Hello World

You don't know me, but you will

Public Libraries Are Great! Moms are even better!

, , ,

I have read hundreds of dollars worth of books over the last month thanks the library! This is wonderful since I don't have any spare money to actually spend on books. I am so happy with what I've been reading too. I order all my favorites from the library network so that even when my library doesn't have the book (often the case) I still get it! I know there is lots to read on the internet, but I like to escape the cords and the bright screens and curl up with a good book (esp. outdoors). Ahhh... Bliss! I'm not gonna embarrass myself further by providing you with my reading list! For those of you who don't know, I am studying to be a librarian. I've loved libraries since I was a toddler! I want to work at either a public library or a school library. I might teach classes on the side as well...

Loving libraries is another trait I picked up from my mother (along with a love of bay windows, fireplaces, potbelly stoves, and Clydesdales). The picture below is of my mother and I when I was little (5 or 6? Looks like it was taken at Kensington Park). We used to go the library together all the time. She would also take dictation for me (when I was too young to write for myself) as I came up with an endless amount of wacky stories along the lines of Alice in Wonderland (one of my favorite stories). We read together until I was almost in my teens. I love my mommy. We didn't get along for a while when I was a teenager. I regret that. Now, I can see that I was just being selfish and not understanding. I don't see her very much now because she lives far away, but I try to make it up to her and call her all the time. I sent her flowers for Mother's day this year. I had chosen an all white bouquet in a blue vase with roses and other white flowers: all the colors and elegance that come to mind when I think of her. I wanted to make her feel really special, like a queen! She really liked them too. That made me happy. I want to go camping with her and my husband (Gomez too!!!) this Summer. I know she'd really love that too. The high cost of gas might make that impossible though...

Yay for moms!

Message for Moms: Even if your daughter doesn't say it enough, she loves you a lot!

Hi Tori - great to read your post here. I have a large private library and to me my books on poetry, philosophy, photography, history, politics, archeaology, astronomy, science, languages "faith based belief systems", etc, are treasures beyond price.

Here in the UK we have over 5000 public libraries open and free and well maintained and stocked. These place are all now integrated with a public access for internet usage. The public service approach is an enlightened one in this regard and the library system is a well maintained, and supported national public facility/asset.

I also purchase many of my books from a wonderful store called Waterstones. I am widely read and as a poet Writing is, for me, "the staff of life" and poetry is a sort of "life-blood" to me.

I started in by admiring your blog post and just also want to add that you make a lovely family picture here and I certainly agree with your line that says "Moms are even better!"

I go further and state that moms (or mums, as we say here in England) are the Jewel In The Family Crown. If I were to even attempt to describe the wonderful, precious, value of a mom and the vital role she has I'd be here for ever. I guess you know what I mean. That is not to say that dads dont count  - they too are an integral part of the family crown - but hey - we are saying it all for moms here

Yayy for mom! :hat:

Warmest wishes,

Loku

Thank you Loku!

Yes! Yay for Moms!

I'm sure dads are great, but I grew up without one so I don't have any first hand experience there. I can say that my grandpa (who passed on when I was eight) filled a special roll in my life and I love him dearly.

I am glad to know that libraries are as much in use overseas. I am sure that as a poet it is important to stay well read. Many writers suggest to read aas much as you can and so I try. Sadly, I don't write much anymore, aside from college papers. I'd like to start up again one day. I will certainly be checking in on your blog to read some of your poetry. I look forward to getting to know you better.

I love libraries too because they are so quiet. However, my mom left so many books when she passed away that those are the ones I have been reading, so I haven't been to the library lately. I hate to say I had to give several hundred away. I just didn't have room. I kept all that she had made little notes in with her initials, plus many classics. I picked up my love of reading from her.

Wow it sounds like your mom collected a lot of books! Imagining such a giant collection of books gives me such joy. Of course I picture all of the books that I would most like to read. More often than not I stick to non-fiction, maybe that is because I am a college student. However, I love the world of fiction as well. These days, losing myself in a good book is a valuable ability.

"These days, losing myself in a good book is a valuable ability"

A good book allows the mind to roam and on the journey all seems possible.

No wonder books can be addicting. Freeing the mind of the so-called rules of the world sounds liberating indeed.

In the country of the mind philosophy is King
