The petrochemical company plans to increase its production capacity of ethylene to 590,000 tons per year from the previous 550,000 tons per year.
Company Secretary of Chandra Asri Suhat Miyarso said that the increased production capacity will be achieved through purchasing processors and crackers for naphtha, the main raw material for producing ethylene.
He explained that each year Chandra Asri requires between 1.3 and 1.4 million tons of naphtha.
“With these additional crackers, the processed naphtha will be 1.6 million tons,” Suhat told Tempo last week. Up until now, the company has imported 85 percent of naphtha from Middle East, India and Singapore.
PT Pertamina only provides 15 percent of the required naphtha.
Naphtha is a by-product of oil refineries that manufacture oil-based fuels. According to Suhat, ethylene prices on the international market were between US$600 and US$700 per ton.
“For the last three years, the price (of ethylene) has been better,” said Suhat.
In addition, he said that price cycles on the world market will usually last for 5-7 years.
He added that within the coming two to three years, Chandra Asri will also develop ethyl benzene and styrene monomer.
Both products are manufactured by Chandra Asri since it acquired PT Styrindo Mono Indonesia, which has production capacities of 380,000 tons for ethyl benzene and 340,000 tons for styrene monomer.
