Pay Tickets Online

Doesn't it suck when you get a ticket for a traffic violation?? And it's so much worse when you're out of state. Then you have to worry about mailing it to the right place and it getting there in time and all that craziness. More county and state governments need to set up online ticket payment systems. There are companies like Court Solutions that can set it up so there is not even any expense to the government and everything synchronizes with their existing systems. I like to pay my bills online so more places having that type of set up would be really convenient. They also have programs so that counties and states can allow people to pay other fines and bonds via the internet as well.

Don't Ignore Symptoms of Depression

, ,

It's not difficult to find out what the symptoms of depression are. In high schools, the counselors pass little yes or no surveys that help students identify whether they are depressed. Most kids don't take it seriously. Sadly, the same is true of adults too. So many people live with depression today and do nothing about it. Some people that don't seek help end up doing something very devastating - taking their life. Suicide rates continuously climb. But why do so many refuse to get help for this problem? For some people, the objection is that they don't have insurance or money to get therapy or medication. That's valid to an extent, because you can still try adjusting your budget or changing some things about your lifestyle to make your outlook more positive. But then there are people who actually do have insurance and money. Let's talk about two self-made obstacles. First, having an aversion to medication combined with the belief that that is the only option. Some commercials on television would have you think that 'take these pills' is all you will hear. But medication is not the only or even the best option for most people. However, there are cases where someone actually has a chemical imbalance that would best be addressed by medication. I do agree that medication shouldn't be the first answer but sometimes, if there is a basis for taking it, it can result in a significantly better life with your family and friends.

Another obstacle came up in a conversation a few weeks ago. Someone acknowledged that they had been living with depression and even mentioned that they had been given pills for it by their doctor but didn't want to take them. When asked why he didn't pursue an alternative like talk therapy, he responded that years ago he had talk to a therapist that was judgmental and that 'turned him off' to counseling. My personal opinion is that, if you know there is something you need for your personal well-being, you shouldn't let one or even many foolish people hold you back. Most areas have at least 20 different mental health care providers, usually more. Even if you have had a bad experience in the past, it would not be wise to generalize that to the whole field. Take some time to do phone interviews and find the counselor that is the right fit for you. You many need to pursue even couples or family counseling to really get to the root of the problem. A therapist has the skills and techniques to help you get out of the rut that has you down.

Protect Your Family

, , , ...

Parents do so much to protect their family. Whether it's screening videos and shows before your kids watch them or just making sure everyone has their seatbelt on before starting the car, preventative measures seem endless. There is one thing that you should not let yourself forget: Guard your loved ones from insect-borne disease. Studies in recent years have shown that cockroaches have an impact on the increase of children with asthma. Mosquitoes transfer bacteria that can cause diseases like West Nile virus. Since bugs and pests pick up bacteria and spread them around, preventing exposure to them is very important. It's vital to make sure that bugs and pests don't see your home as a safe haven. That involves maintaining a clean home and not leaving a way in. You can try to tackle this yourself but without experience you probably won't notice everything that needs to be fixed. My Bulldog Pest Control offers inspections and evaluations so you can see how vulnerable you are and how you can be better protected. From mosquito control to termite bait systems, they have the knowledge and experience to ensure that you are taken care of.

American Pitbull Terrier - Misunderstood or Menace?

, , , ...

It's interesting the subjects that really polarize people. Certain things that you bring up just arouse a strong and definite opinion in most people. You're probably thinking of things like politics, religion, etc. And those subjects do indeed bring a definite opinion out of many, but there's something else that was on my mind. Pitbulls. So what was your mental reaction? Most people feel strongly either that they are terrible dangerous dogs that should be banned or restricted in some way OR that they are wonderful family dogs that display an amazing loyalty and an enviable joy for life. Whenever I've spoken to people, and even when I look online, I can quickly discern which side someone is on. I admit, it's hard not to be biased one way or another. Personally, I love them. I have three of my own and they are fantastic dogs. By the way, when I talk about pitbulls I'm speaking of true American Pitbull Terriers, not a dog that is loosely labeled as a pitbull without anyone actually knowing its origins. Now, to add some balance here....People who view pitbulls as a menace to society cite the many media reported cases of pitbull maulings and attacks. I can definitely agree that we hear about it pretty regularly in the media. But, do you really think that before they call a dog a pitbull in that report, they first ask to see its pedigree? How do we know that these so-called pitbulls are even actually pitbulls?? We don't.

However, I will admit that pitbulls, along with some other generally feared breeds, can pack a lot of power. So that means that if something does go wrong, the impact is clearly going to be more severe than when a beagle attacks, for example. But I feel that every bite and attack can be prevented. Do you still feel that that's an outrageous idea? Just think about a few basic facts about dogs in general: Like humans, dogs are pack animals. And every pack has a leader. The leader is whoever is in control, whoever determines how things run in the pack, whoever decides what's acceptable and what's not. So, are most owners actually the leader in their dogs mind? Honestly, no. How can you tell? If you see a dog and an owner walking down the street and that dog is dragging that person around, or even consistently walking in front of the person and deciding when to stop and when to go, who's calling the shots in that relationship? The dog. Are most dogs cut out to be leaders? Definitely not. You know how some dogs develop funny little quirks like spinning around uncontrollably? Things like that are symptoms of a stressed, unbalanced dog. You know what else is a symptom? Aggression.

So in reality, the solution to almost all dog bites is to only allow people who will put in the necessary work to be the leader to have dogs, the people who will proactively call the shots so that dog won't feel the need to do it and therefore, won't display symptoms like fear, protectiveness, and aggression. Is that the case with pitbulls? Yes, they need those same things. So the main factor is that the human must be the leader. But that's not the only consideration. The owner must be a responsible leader. Because just as people can be led in the wrong direction, pitbulls can too. So anyone who views their pitbull as a weapon, who leads them into aggression, shouldn't be authorized to have one. Another factor that is unique to powerful breeds like pitbulls is genetics. I mention this last deliberately - the other two are more important. But it is a factor because a pitbull that was bred for fighting or aggression will have a higher tendency toward these behaviors and in order to live successfully, will need an extremely attentive and dedicated owner. 'Isn't every pitbull bred to fight?' Absolutely not! If that was the case, I wouldn't own them. I have a five year old sister and I wouldn't allow her to be put at risk. The key is to get, as I mentioned before, a true American Pitbull Terrier. You must find one that has been bred to be a family dog but still retain the qualities like loyalty, strength, beauty, and pure happiness that define the breed. So, by going through a reliable breeder that both loves and respects these dogs and that would NEVER allow them to be used for aggression or fighting, you can find loyal, loving family pets like I did.

Is Carpet Cleaning a Necessity or an Option?

, , ,

What does it take for you to deep clean your carpets? A big stain you can't get out on your own? A marked change in color? For my family, it's always been when they were looking a bit dingy. In other words, about every year and a half to two years. But, when I really consider it, four out of six of my immediate family members have had a respiratory issue of some kind, from constant allergy problems to full blown asthma. Well, according to New Scientist magazine, "Our exposure to most toxic pollutants is between 10 and 50 times higher in indoor environments than it is outdoors." Further, the Environmental Protection Agency identifies indoor air pollution as an urgent environmental concern. Dust, pet dander, lead, pesticides, and even carcinogens are trapped and then re-circulated by your carpet. Think about how much time you spend inside and, if you have young children, how much they play on the floor.

By regular and thorough vacuum cleaning you can pick up some of these pollutants. But in addition to that your home needs a professional carpet cleaning at least every six months, more often if you have lots of children or pets. You can either rent or buy a cleaner or hire a carpet cleaning company. Whichever option you go with, it's important that you get it done for the sake of your family's health. What I've learned has definitely motivated me to have our carpets cleaned more regularly. The aesthetic benefits of carpet cleaning are all well and good but protecting my family from exposure to toxins is what will really inspire me to stay on a consistent schedule of deep carpet cleaning. Between the deep cleanings, vacuum all carpets a minimum of once a week, passing over each section of low traffic carpet four times and at least 10 times in high traffic areas. Also, place quality dirt-catching doormats at each entrance of your house, wiping your feet at least twice. You may also consider instituting a house rule of shoe removal at the door.

4 Signs of a Dependable Mechanic

, , ,

It is becoming more and more important to keep current vehicle in good condition rather than ignoring problems and maintenance only to end up paying the price later. Maintenance is crucial no matter how old or new your vehicle is. Even routine aspects like changing the oil and air filters cannot be disregarded. I know a few people who ended up stuck on the side of the road because they thought they couldn’t spare the few dollars to change their oil but, instead, had to pay even more to have their car repaired. So, what you need is a dependable auto mechanic.

A good mechanic should:

1. Stand behind his work

2. Be available when you’re stranded

3. Be established and experienced

4. Not be constantly up-selling you

In other words, you should be able the same thing this person said about their mechanic:

“I've used Wrights at least 7-8 times, and people I've sent to them several more. Everyone has been very pleased.

Honesty, integrity and fair prices. And unlike many dealers they don't "find" a lot of things needed to increase the sale.”

After investigating this mechanic’s website further I discovered they offer a 12,000 mile guarantee on parts and labor. Wright’s Car Care has been in business since 1953. In addition, they also provide 24 hour towing service. It’s obvious why that person felt that way. I wish you a similar positive experience.

Steakhouse to Check Out

, , , ...

I was going through the website for Sweetfire Lodge Steakhouse in Gainesville, GA. It sounds really good. I also checked out reviews from some outside sources and people are having positive experiences. They have a lot of specials right now – all you can eat prime rib for $15.99 and two entrees for $14.99 are just a few examples. I definitely plan to check this place out, especially after going through their menu and coupons. Just reading through Sweetfire Lodge’s site made me sooo hungry. I’m torn between trying the St. Louis Ribs or the Southern Style Meatloaf. We’ll see, but either way they’re both on the two for $15 menu, a great deal for a date. Anyway, tell me what you think and I’ll you what I think once I have dinner there.

3 Ways to Use a Business Card

, ,

In this tough economy, we are seeing people who have businesses struggling to bring in traffic, people who are tired of searching for work freelancing or starting new businesses, and then there are the over 500,000 unemployed Americans searching for jobs. Would you believe that there is one tool that can help them all? A professional business card.

So how can these groups use a little 3.5” x 2” card to give them an edge?

1. Coupon/Discount – Struggling business owners can build up traffic by distributing not only their name and location but also an incentive to come visit during a certain time period. Plus, you get these benefits without paying for advertising space in a local paper or magazine and then having to compete against other local companies for a glance.

2. Cheap Advertising – New businesses need to get their name out in the community. One of the cheapest ways to not only get your business in people’s mouths but also to have them remember it is to use business cards.

3. Mini Resume – A job seeker who networks well won’t always have a resume in their back pocket when they hear that someone is hiring. And I’ve personally seen how little slips of paper with an obscure name and number end up in a junk pile. But a sleek professional business card that states who you are, how you can be contacted, plus a brief summary of your skills will not be so quickly disregarded.

So are you ready to get yours yet? Well, if you’re in the metro-Atlanta area, there is a company you need to take a look at – Gainesville Printing. They have a special through the end of September – 550 full color two-sided business cards with U.V. Coating for just $39 or 1000 for only $59. This is a great deal – about 20% less than office supply stores – and you will get high quality business cards! And, by the way, Gainesville Printing handles everything from business cards to printing invitations to graphic design services. Contact them today to get your cards started.
