Get Joe Jackson's New Album "Rain"

Joe Jackson Live In Pittsburgh

I just got back from a day trip to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to see Joe Jackson in concert. Joe along with Graham Maby and Dave Houghton are touring in support of his latest CD "Rain". The concert was held at the Carnegie Music Library in Homestead PA, just outside of Pittsburgh.
My wife and I arrived about an hour before the show and got a chance to meet Graham and Dave as they were hanging outside backstage chatting. Graham is a great bassist and a very personable guy. We talked about the first time I saw Joe at the Thebarton Town Hall in Adelaide South Australia in 1983. He said he remembered the gig since it was their first time Down Under.
The show started with the opening act Mutlu. This guy is incredibly talented. He is from Philadelphia and posesses the expected blue-eyed soul popularized by the likes of Daryl Hall. His song set was very capivating and enjoyable. His songs are catchy acoustic pop with a soulful feel and a touch of reggae. I would recommend checking out his music at MutluSounds.com
Joe started the show with a slow rendition of his 1983 hit "Steppin' Out" from the CD "Night and Day". He ran through as many songs as possible in the hour and a half he performed. Joe remarked on the beauty of the music hall and how the reverberation needed to be utilized by a special song. He launched into one of the slow tunes from "Body and Soul".
His set continued with many songs diehard Joe Jackson fans knew by heart from 1979's "Look Sharp" through his latest release.
I felt that a few songs were missing from the show since I have seen Joe a few times over the years. I expected to hear "Hometown" from "Big World" and "Be My Number Two" from "Body and Soul". Joe seemed to get upset with the crowd while he was performing "Is She Really Going Out With Him" as the crowd began singing along as he was mixing up the arrangement as Joe usually does. From that song he quickly slid into "Slow Song" which he has ended the last four shows I have seen over the last decade.
I feel it was a great show. The venue was very intimate and lended itself to the stripped down arrangements that Joe brought to the stage with the trio. A big thank you to Joe, Graham, and Dave for another incredible evening of music.
