laptop dies then lives again with xubuntu

, , , , , , , , , , , ,

Yesterday I posted about helping a friend with his laptop and having the hard drive die right as I was giving him a computer/net lesson. He ended up giving me the laptop.

The hard drive that had Windows XP on it gave out with some terrible noises. The XP restore CD was not to be had, not that I even use Windows anyway. A new hard drive and Xubuntu brought this Toshiba Satellite M55-S135 back to life with a vengeance in almost no time. This model was probably produced in 2005.

Image #3: "klackety-klack" said this hard drive as it up and died, taking Windows XP with it. Is that mean? :D

Image 4: I downloaded Xubuntu while I went to the computer store for a new hard drive. This is the old dead drive beside the Xubuntu CD that is getting ready to breathe life back into the Toshiba Satellite M55-S135.

Image #5: Xubuntu boots from the CD. I love the running mouse logo. I'm considering leaving KDE for its fast Xfce desktop.

The story is even more beautiful with pictures.

Thanks selurus. It's almost too good to be true. Swap drive, download, install, have fun!

I've run KDE for about 10 years now but am falling in love with the speed and simplicity of Xfce. What to do?

The shells are getting so resource hungry as the coders try to please everyone with all the new bells and whistles that on a regular basis another new one pushes the stack from the bottom until it eats too much junk food code then another lean mean one comes in. A vicious cycle.

I love the beauty and gee-whiz of KDE, but with release 4 and the plasma desktop, it's a little draggy on my several year old machine.

This Xfce has me so tickled I could just pee all over, but can I leave KDE for speedy no-nonsense functionality of Xfce?

It would be like leaving Heather for Jane, or in my case, leaving Orlando for Bob.

it makes me smile every time i boot it or look at that pretty desktop!

In the next to last picture, is that a wallpaper or a screensaver? Very nice whichever it is.

I think it was the "Totem" movie player tuned to somaFM with the visualization running fullscreen. I used to think Gnome apps sucked, but I was basing that opinion on having last used them about 9 years ago, lol. I love 'em now.

You just switched the HDD that's nice, some laptop you can't just unscrew some panel and switch, very nice indeed...

You can try some OpenSolaris...i don't use it but anyway this use some special ZFS system.

I was lucky on this Toshiba with its convenient hatch. I changed the hard drive in a Sony Vaio years ago that was a lot harder. On the Sony, I had to remove the speaker panel, then the keyboard, then some other screws in a specific sequence.

Thanks for the link on OpenSolaris.

Great post. My Acer (Toshiba) HDD also almost died (bad sectors-cannot boot). Right now I'm surfing with live CD of Maryan Linux (Ubuntu-HardyH based Enlightment distro).

Hi Mirjana. It's nice to meet you and thanks for the comments today. I am enjoying your blog right now. I just installed openastro because of a post you made.
