working for the king

, ,

I recently did some work for a company that had this painting in the lobby. It's King Edward VII. Hmmm, wonder why they'd have him hanging around?

King Edward certainly lived an interesting life. At first, I was going to write him off as just another 'royal' womanizer with a bunch of titles, until I read this:

"His advisors remarked on his habit of treating all people the same, regardless of their social station or colour."

Hmm. A socialist royal. Thats interesting.

Was he socialist? I don't know, myself. I guess the quote above could exist in any political or economic system.

He did seem enlightened in some ways. I just skimmed his history though.

I think he also liked cigars.

That he did. He smoked several cigarettes and 12 cigars a day.

Plus he was the person who started the trend of wearing pressed pants with the crease in the front.

Very stylish! :D Also, his "ABBA" boots look fun.

Though they spell it the same way, they mean an entirely different thing

That house provided for our monarchy. The last and most recent King is so happy to be here in this function, he's still shaking day and night.

I haven't done my homework yet, so it's a new one to me. I don't know a thing about royals really, just some of the names.

My brother was a British monarchy nut. His knowledge was encyclopedic.

Edward VII was very much a fan of France and French culture. He helped to make the Riviera popular - a mixed legacy, I'm afraid!

"Edward the Caresser" was one of his nicknames while he was king. He is said to have died in the arms of his longest and most beloved mistress.

Actually, I have a photograph of Edward VII in my office - little coincidence there!

I'm enjoying these historical bits.

My dad used to have a bust of Nefertiti in his office. When I was little then, I'd ask him, "why does she have that cone on her head?" Then I'd start playing with Dad's Dictaphone.

better to be hanging around than to be hung... on a noose that is...
