keeping the evil at bay - garden statuary

, , , ,

We have these cement statues here and there around the yard. Since we put them up, there have been no problems at all with neighbors or thieves, so I must deem them as highly effective. :D

We may get this doormat to go along with everything:

The statuary:

We call this one Rafael. Cute little thing! He's from Paris, I think.

oooh statuary to keep evil (squirrels too one presumes) away? Excellent, I'll take one gross. Thanks!

 The last one is similar to the ones from Easter Island. :sherlock:

My mom finds Rafael (the Paris one) particularly evil. I thought about putting about 13 dead sparrows around him to see what she says. :D

I think you got it! We used to play this game called Timelapse back when we had Windows 95. It had a lot of beautiful Easter Island scenes on it. I might have to resurrect an old Windows box to play it again.

hungryghost, I just noticed a squirrel practically licking the Olmec head. It's to the right of the head. Damn! Heads are gonna roll now, and I don't mean the Olmec one!

EEEK You're right! I'm sending you a titanium post for its head right now!

Dave! These are great. It's good I don't live down the street from you cuz I'd probably try to buy one from you.

Have always had a fascination with the gargoyles ever since the ones I saw on the Louvre and other buildings in Paris.

I like scouting second hand stores for old garden statuary. Found one with two standing cupids that had bluish green paint peeling off. My kids think it's freaky because the head is missing on one of the cupids. Doesn't matter to me.

There is one store called Qcumbers that is jammed floor to ceiling with stuff from the 40s to the 60s. I haven't been in a while and just might go today.

Hey Pam,

I think the one we call Rafael is a copy of one from Notre Dame. He's really sweet. If we could just get him to quit smoking.

There are several places around town that carry these cement things. Probably it is the same around Phoenix. One place here in particular carries more of the weird ones than anybody else. We always go there cause the man running it is a bit strange and loves to give a big discount if you buy more than a piece or two.

If you don't already have one, you'll probably have to borrow a pickup or van to get them home. They are amazingly heavy.

PainterWoman 6. November 2009, 16:45

Yeah that cupid one I bought was pretty heavy. I left it in my car till my son dropped by one day to get it out. It's only about 2 feet high and I probably could have managed it myself but didn't want to take the chance. I have a glorified station wagon (Dodge Magnum) so no problem with room.

Ah Notre Dame. That's where I saw the gargoyles and not the Louvre.

There is a Phoenix artist who carves garden sculpture out of styrofoam and paints it to look like bronze. They are cool but you'd have to anchor it down somehow because I'm sure it'd be blown half a mile away during one of our monsoons.

He also makes statuary out of chicken wire and Quik Crete. Stuffs newspaper inside the wire to hold the concrete. Should have bought one a couple of years ago when his prices were around $150. Now they are $300 or more.

OH! It's very relaxing...then you read "Heart of Darkness" to them...
