should i buy this?

, , ,

Here it is on Amazon for $349.99. Runs Linux. Windows verboten hier. I could use it for all the traveling I do, though it would be more stuff to lug around, and free wireless is shrinking by the day. Everybody has their hand out for a nickel here, a dime there, or a freakin' $10 for hotel room access for a few hours. Public libraries (you know, those liberal citadels of subversive thought) are usually the key for a quick connect.

It only weighs 2.2 pounds. That's the same as a kilo of weed. What should I do. Buy now? Pissing money into the wind?

Getting it would mean even more of my mindless myopera posting from the road. p:

Tell me. Save the money? But it now? Continue with the cell phone and Opera Mini? I obviously can't make decisions on my own.

I enjoy looking at pictures of what people have for computers and working online. I especially like the computers that are online yet half taken apart, beat up, particularly old, etc. Please post links or pics of what you have, if you like.

Here's a little photo tour of what we use right now in all its dirty glory. I did not clean up for this photo session. Each pic is clickable if you need to see a larger size. Just click "all sizes" once you land on the flickr page.

Image #1: This is Brian's elderly laptop, a Sony Vaio. We've lost count of how old it is. It's still running beautifully with Kubuntu 8.04 on it, the Hardy Heron. Notice the Palenque desktop wallpaper.

Image #2: My dusty 4-year old tower built by a local store called Intrex. It's never had the pleasure of running Windows. It's had Debian, then a long run of Slackware, then finally Kubuntu 8.10. It has an AMD something in it, and an ATi Radion something or other video card. I can't remember without looking them up.

Image #3: My dusty tower again. I really do take it apart and clean it often, I'm just out of the cans of compressed air right now.

Image #4: Snakes and wires everywhere! All that lovin' to and from my opera comes through these. Some other types of lovin' also flow through these cables from time to time.

So many hooks and wires

Image #6: Ah, the KDE desktop is so purdy. It's KDE 4.1 running on Kubuntu 8.10, the Intrepid Ibex.

lazy saturday - slipping away mentally

, , , ...

After two weeks straight of driving a rental car over hell and half of Georgia for my job, I finally was able to have a Saturday with little to do.

Here is a recap of the important goings on for the day:

  • I got up and made a kick-ass coffee using the French press method.

  • I toyed with the idea of filling up the pickup with gas but decided to wait another week until gas prices hopefully stabilize. Prices are high right now supposedly due to the hurricane in Texas (translation: another Big Oil gang rape of the public).

  • For late lunch I made the Campbell's Cheesy Chicken & Rice Casserole.

  • I made a few edifying posts to my opera. This 'un and this 'un.

  • I changed all my messenger buddy icons to a manga image. I have Jabber, ICQ, AIM, and Yahoo. Why aren't you chatting with me on one of them right now?

  • I ordered a manga book from Amazon.

  • I watched a particularly good episode of Law and Order guest starring Fred Savage. He's still lookin' good! :D

  • I downloaded a few mp3's and enjoyed Meat Loaf singing Paradise by the Dashboard Light.

  • I wondered why a few of my friends don't want to hang out with me online anymore. :frown:

  • I thought about how much I enjoy Seinfeld and I love Lucy.

  • I stalked a few people on my opera and flickr who have good pics.

  • I thought about ordering an ultra-portable Linux laptop from Dell. Maybe later.

OK, that's all! One more week out of town then I'll have a week off.

my week off, mid-week progress

, , , ...

I'm halfway through my week off and enjoying it quite a lot. As usual, on my weeks off I have grand plans on getting a lot done, but I always turn into a total sloth.

Here's what's happened so far:

  • I've looked at a lot of wonderful photography on flickr and have wondered how I can learn to use my digital camera better. I appreciate it when people take the time to document and share what they see.

  • I've browsed many wonderful blogs here on My Opera. Again, people all over the world sharing and communicating. Would we solve some world problems if we could all hear each other out more?

  • I've had several lengthy audio and text chats with a fine friend here on My Opera (you know who you are, sweetie!). We use Jabber and GoogleTalk for the text chats, and Meebo for the audio calls. You should join us!

  • I've looked at this rather odd picture of the fun and friendly Opera Software employee EspenAO, and wondered why he didn't prefer Batman, lol. Then again, I try not to criticize the fetishes of others.

  • I've followed a sometimes heated and emotional discussion on the Russia/Georgia violence in this post on Naomi's blog. Kudos to her for having the courage to touch upon the subject. My somewhat simplistic post about it is here.

  • I've followed the serious, thorough, and upsetting news of the nation and the world from the fine journalists at democracynow. Try it. Very informative.

  • I've enjoyed the smooth relaxing pleasure of drinking a few Miller Genuine Drafts and Blue Moons. I'm so surprised that the large American breweries can mass produce such yummy lagers. A lot of people think they are crap if they aren't from Europe, but hey, I love 'em. I love European lagers, too, though they are a bit expensive and not always very fresh here.

  • I've toyed with the idea of buying an ultra-mini Linux laptop, like this one, the Inspiron 910, that is soon to come out.

Still to be done this week:

  • Read this book that I just got from the public library. Aren't libraries wonderful!

  • Cut the grass.

  • Drink a few more lagers on our new patio. Don't you want to come over for a few?

  • Find a new job that doesn't make me go crazy. Hilfa!

What else should I do this week?
