more puppy linux fun on sylvania meso netbook

, , , ...

I've done this before, run The Puppy on the netbook. It amazes me how fast it boots from a usb drive and how fine it runs. The netbook comes with Ubuntu Netbook Remix installed, but it's always more fun to run other things just for the hell of it.

Image #3: The Puppy lives here on a usb flash drive. Take a cheap-o flash drive, make it bootable, install the Puppy to it, and boot 'er up! Your session will get saved back to the usb drive each time, never touching the netbook hard drive. The flash drive can be formatted as "vfat", or why not be groovy and go for "ext3" or something.

checking out of the microtel

, , , ...

I'm waiting in the lobby of the Microtel for two hours until my coworker gets done and comes back for me, then I can drive home. I'm playing online with my cute little netbook on the hotel wifi.

I actually got a better rate than the posted $59.95 single. Reserving online with a AAA (American Automobile Association) discount got me $53.86 a night, plus taxes.

nice wifi in a cheap red roof inn - florence, south carolina

I'm finally at my last stop for work this week in Florence, South Carolina. No cheap TV tonight, I got net! I logged on and immediately bought 2 tickets for the Burning Man festival this fall in Nevada.

We went to Burning Man in 2004 and are looking forward to it again this year. We took pics and they are here. Yay! I'm so ready to go back.

the puppy runs great on the sylvania meso netbook

, , , ...

I'm still having a helluva good time with my Sylvania netbook that I got back in November.

For the heck of it, I downloaded Puppy Linux and installed it on a USB stick. The netbook boots the Puppy from the USB and, viola! It's a cute-as-can-be system and runs fast as blazes. I changed the appearance around a little (the snowman wallpaper), installed Opera, then saved it all back to the USB stick for next time.

It was fun on a cold night.

testing the wifi at the public library

, , , ...

I had to do a lot of running around downtown today, so I took the new netbook with me so I could try out my city's net access at the public library. It couldn't be easier. I think because I have an alternative DNS configured on this machine, I was not even shown the Terms of Service screen when I connected. Would not using the library DNS bypass that? The library connection is strong and smooth. It's fun having this little netbook with so many graphics and net tools I love already on it.

A few people have walked by and glared at me. Do they think I'm a dumbass? Do they like the netbook? Maybe they want to steal it.

OK, time to have lunch. More later from home. By the way, I checked out a radical book while I was here. Damn the thoughtcrime! :D

Library connection info with openDNS configured.

A pic of me in the library from the netbook webcam. Fiction section visible behind me.
