9.10, screenshot, gnome, os

The obligatory screenshot after upgrading my netbook to
Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 (Karmic Koala).
It just gets more beautiful with each release, jawdropping almost. The Netbook Remix makes the most out of the small screen sizes of netbooks. I can use it fine, even with my weak near vision.

All you *buntu freaks, it's almost here again, upgrade time. Distro upgrades are always fun. This Thursday, 29 October 2009, is the next release, 9.10 (Karmic Koala, WTF!) so fire up those torrent clients and look busy.
See my
CD-less speedy combo method of upgrading. Download servers will overload on Thursday, so if you use bittorrent to fetch, you'll save a lot of time.
All of these are fun and run smooth as silk:
-
Ubuntu - for you Gnome-ers. Safe with most medications.
-
Kubuntu - KDE eye-candy fantasy. Goes well with spicy Chinese take-out, or Vietnamese.
-
Xubuntu - for people who like the military-like precision of the Xfce desktop like I do.
-
Edubuntu - Ubuntu enhanced with educational applications, tools, content, and themes.
-
Ubuntu Netbook Remix - runs dreamy on my Sylvania Meso netbook.
-
Microsoft Windows 7 - obligatory "I'm kidding" link. What a freakin' downer!
If you can't decide which one to get, just pick any of the first few listed above. One can be converted to another with little hassle.
Reminder, if you are upgrading from a previous *buntu system,
get the *alternate* CD iso file, not the main one. If it's a virginal install, any of the iso files will do. In fact, if you're new to all this, get the recommended main file. You can boot it live and see how it looks before you install it.
Upgrades: get the *alternate* file! Virgins, get any file, especially the main one.All install easy as pie, especially with beer.

Don't forget to install
Opera after you get 'er running.
Control + C. I'm done!

My beloved little yaller (yellow)
Sylvania Meso netbook came with Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) Netbook Remix pre-installed. Just the other day, I was wondering WTF (where the f***) is an upgrade for that? Well, sure as shootin', the 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) just came out for it, too.
With the Netbook Remix, it won't auto upgrade like the standard *buntus will. You have to wipe and reinstall. I was worried about wiping a fully customized OEM install and replacing it with the generic download of 9.04, but everything actually works A-OK.
It was fast and easy. Here are the basic staps I used:
- I copied my home directory to a USB flash drive (one of these days I'll put it on it's own partition).
- I downloaded the updated Netbook Remix and wrote it to a flash drive using these instructions.
- Installed it.
- Copied my home directory back.
- Re-fetched my favorite apps.
Pros of the upgrade:
- WiFi works tons better. It was a buggy pain in the ass before.
- The desktop is very pretty, though it's Gnome and I tend to love KDE more.
- Everything runs fast and like a dream, as usual.
Cons of the upgrade:
- Windows don't always maximize correctly.
- Sound recorded from the microphone is herky-jerky.
Oh well, it will give me something to tweak. All in all the upgrade was painless and a lot of fun.

The surprise unbox! I had no idea I was getting this for
Christmas Hanukkah Whatever! Ummm, not really.

Already online and uploading for Thanksgiving! Beer a la izquierda.

Virginal defaultish screenshot.

Cool built in webcam capture. I woulda been better had I peeled off the plastic protective film first.

All this was done on the netbook on its first boot. wh00kah!

GPL, linux, free software, gutsy gibbon
...

Anytime is fun time with the Linux boxen. My desktop and Brian's laptop needed some Gutsy Gibbon to Hardy Heron
Kubuntu action this weekend, so I fetched in the
iso image for
the CD so that I could upgrade both for one download. I like to use
BitTorrent to fetch in those large files so that I'm not troubling any one server for the bandwidth.
Yeah, my name on myopera is slackwrdave, and I did run
Slackware for over 10 years, but with release 12, I felt like it had become too much trouble. I won't go into details, but there was way too much headbanging over a few little niggling problems, and the official documentation was conflicting and usually outdated. I needed something I could help Brian administer over the telephone, as he travels a lot, so the Ubuntu/Kubuntu thing looked like a winner.
Getting under the hood a lot with Slackware really made customizing and tweaking Kubuntu a total breeze. Yup, we're
KDE addicts, so we do
Kubuntu, but the
Gnome based
Ubuntu is nice, too.
Anytime is fun time with these Gnu/Linux boxes! They run like a dream.

It still amazes me that I can download and install an entire operating system without having to have permission to do it, AND it's primo stuff. They are free, too, free as in "without charge", and free as in "without restriction".
Ain't they cool.
This is what it's all about,
and this, plus you get to have a
whole lotta fun!Free, free, free. Doncha wanna be free baby? lol
