relaxing weekend slightly bumpy due to /dev/hda1

western digital, /dev/hda1, hard drive, linux ...

I think my hard drive is failing, but what do I know about these things. Three times in the past twelve hours I've found my computer all locked up, or everything seg faulting, or a kernel panic.

I switched over to a console as it was going down one time, I typed "df", and it said something about ext3 fs errors on /dev/hda1. That's the master drive. Oh, master!

Should I just assume it's the hard drive? Dunno. I could pick up a new one tomorrow, but I hate to part with $80 right now.

Strangely, I've never had a hard drive just up and fail since 1996. I've always sworn by Western Digitals. I've made my backups.

In other news today, I bathed the dog and wished my sweet BF a happy 20th anniversary.

The obligatory screenshot after upgrading my netbook to Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 (Karmic Koala).

It just gets more beautiful with each release, jawdropping almost. The Netbook Remix makes the most out of the small screen sizes of netbooks. I can use it fine, even with my weak near vision.

I talked about this the other day. I'm off from work all this week, so I have little to do but wait on a distro upgrade of Ubuntu/Xubuntu/Kubuntu. I guess it's better than sitting around drunk.

Already got 'er flowing in on bittorrent. Then I can do my CD-less install. Then I'll copy the iso file to a flash drive and carry it around to all the computers in my life.

Nice license, huh! Download once, install as many times as you like. Do what you want. Have your way with it.

ubuntu freaks, it is almost time for 9.10

All you *buntu freaks, it's almost here again, upgrade time. Distro upgrades are always fun. This Thursday, 29 October 2009, is the next release, 9.10 (Karmic Koala, WTF!) so fire up those torrent clients and look busy.

See my CD-less speedy combo method of upgrading. Download servers will overload on Thursday, so if you use bittorrent to fetch, you'll save a lot of time.

All of these are fun and run smooth as silk:

Ubuntu - for you Gnome-ers. Safe with most medications.
Kubuntu - KDE eye-candy fantasy. Goes well with spicy Chinese take-out, or Vietnamese.
Xubuntu - for people who like the military-like precision of the Xfce desktop like I do.
Edubuntu - Ubuntu enhanced with educational applications, tools, content, and themes.
Ubuntu Netbook Remix - runs dreamy on my Sylvania Meso netbook.
Microsoft Windows 7 - obligatory "I'm kidding" link. What a freakin' downer!

If you can't decide which one to get, just pick any of the first few listed above. One can be converted to another with little hassle.

Reminder, if you are upgrading from a previous *buntu system, get the *alternate* CD iso file, not the main one. If it's a virginal install, any of the iso files will do. In fact, if you're new to all this, get the recommended main file. You can boot it live and see how it looks before you install it.

Upgrades: get the *alternate* file! Virgins, get any file, especially the main one.

All install easy as pie, especially with beer.

Don't forget to install Opera after you get 'er running.

Reedplayernc has discovered that his Xubuntu laptop has a serious bug!

You can't see it in this image, but there is an ant crawling around inside the screen. It's driving him crazy. We're hoping it will eventually crawl away.

I wonder which tech forum this bug should be reported in?
