ubuntu netbook remix 9.10

The obligatory screenshot after upgrading my netbook to Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 (Karmic Koala).

It just gets more beautiful with each release, jawdropping almost. The Netbook Remix makes the most out of the small screen sizes of netbooks. I can use it fine, even with my weak near vision.

morning screenshot with daily news

, , , ...

I am having my morning coffee. It's beans that I bought from Ikea in Charlotte, NC as I was returning home one afternoon. Ikea has a section called "Ikea Food" where you can pick up lots of treats imported from Sweden.

With the morning coffee, I like a dose of the news from Democracy Now. They work real hard to dig deep, present alternative viewpoints, and give time to voices that are often silenced or hard to hear in the corporate world of info-tainment. Sometimes they get powerful and/or famous people. Just this week they had an interview with the President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa. I've seen Evo Morales of Bolivia on there, too. Also, Bill Clinton called into the show when he was president.

The phone conversation with Bill Clinton was fascinating and instructive as to how the White House works with or against the press. Clinton was doing some political stumping and was hoping for a quick and easy chat with Democracy Now anchor, Amy Goodman. Amy never gives a free pass to anybody, so she quickly started to talk real issues with the president. This threw Clinton for a loop, though he stayed on the phone a surprisingly long time. The White House called back and stated to chew out Amy for straying from the script. I think they are not used to unmanaged interviews. :D

Here's what Amy wrote about her chat with the White House:

--

We were amazed that President Clinton had stayed on the phone for so long. We quickly produced a transcript of the interview, alerted the press, then ran the interview during our regular broadcast the following day.

After the show, I got a call from the White House press office. A staffer let me know how furious they were at me for "breaking the ground rules for the interview."

"Ground rules?" I asked. "What ground rules? He called up to be interviewed, and I interviewed him."

"He called to discuss getting out the vote, and you strayed from the topic. You also kept him on much longer than the two to three minutes we agreed to," she huffed.

"President Clinton is the most powerful person in the world," I replied. "He can hang up when he wants to."

The Clinton administration threatened to ban me from the White House and suggested to a Newsday reporter that they might punish me for my attitude by denying me access-not that I had any to lose. White House spokesman Elliot Diringer said, "Any good reporter understands that if you violate the ground rules in an interview, that is going to be taken into account the next time you are seeking an interview."

First of all, we hadn't agreed to any ground rules. Clinton called us. Second, we wouldn't have agreed to any. The only ground rule for good reporting I know is that you don't trade your principles for access. We were treating the president not as royalty, but as a public servant accountable to the people.

The entire Clinton/Goodman chat is here if you want it.

Anyway, this is how I like to start my day: good coffee and real news. Screenshot below.

Download the music. It won't hurt ya. Available in ogg and mp3.

obligatory periodic netbook screenshot after distro upgrade

My beloved little yaller (yellow) Sylvania Meso netbook came with Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) Netbook Remix pre-installed. Just the other day, I was wondering WTF (where the f***) is an upgrade for that? Well, sure as shootin', the 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) just came out for it, too.

With the Netbook Remix, it won't auto upgrade like the standard *buntus will. You have to wipe and reinstall. I was worried about wiping a fully customized OEM install and replacing it with the generic download of 9.04, but everything actually works A-OK.

It was fast and easy. Here are the basic staps I used:

  • I copied my home directory to a USB flash drive (one of these days I'll put it on it's own partition).
  • I downloaded the updated Netbook Remix and wrote it to a flash drive using these instructions.
  • Installed it.
  • Copied my home directory back.
  • Re-fetched my favorite apps.

Pros of the upgrade:

  • WiFi works tons better. It was a buggy pain in the ass before.
  • The desktop is very pretty, though it's Gnome and I tend to love KDE more.
  • Everything runs fast and like a dream, as usual.

Cons of the upgrade:

  • Windows don't always maximize correctly.
  • Sound recorded from the microphone is herky-jerky.

Oh well, it will give me something to tweak. All in all the upgrade was painless and a lot of fun.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix Upgraded on Sylvania Netbook

puppy linux 4.20 is out

, , , ...

As usual, Puppy Linux runs great on the Sylvania Meso netbook. I've posted about this slick portable Linux distro before, here, here, and here. The latest version, 4.20, is available for download here.

It installs easily on a CD or USB flash drive, and saves itself back every time, so even though it's not a permanent hard drive install (though it can be), you can keep all your changes.

I previously had Puppy 4.12 on my flash drive, so the upgrade was a snap. I downloaded the .iso file and extracted three files to the USB drive: initrd.gz, vmlinux, and pup_420.sfs. A quick reboot and I was up and running with 4.20. If it's your first install to a USB drive, the Puppy installer will take care of the flash drive for you. See the documentation.

The Puppy is a fast and portable way to have some Linux fun. It's especially nice if you are just wanting to try it out without making changes to your existing system. It handles the wireless just fine and knows what to do with about anything I jack into the USB ports. The default window manager, JVM, is prettier than ever, and the ICE window manager (icewm) is also ready to go if preferred.

One time I used the Puppy to rescue a torn up Windows XP system. Very handy!

Have fun! Oh, and like most Linux distros, it goes well with beer.
