trapped in a cheap hotel but the wifi is good

, ,

My work vehicle, affectionately called "the unit", broke down on the way to the job this morning. I was rolling along OK when the motor shut off. I was amazed at how hard it is to steer and brake that thing without the engine. I had little time to get a feel for that as it ran over a curb and nearly across the median into oncoming traffic.

Anyway, I got it off into a shopping center parking lot, and two hours later I got it towed away. The bonus is that I now have relaxing free time to read my ass off and have fun with the hotel's blazingly fast wifi. The repairs will probably take two days. I get paid anyway. :D

If I asked nice, the company would probably get a rental car for me to dick around in, but there's nowhere I really need to go, and it's a nice time to get some exercise walking everywhere. The hotel is in a ramshackle area where almost everything is out of business. People just mill around waiting on the bus or hang out to give plasma for some cash. In the nearly abandoned shopping center parking lots, cars creep in quietly at night and leave in the morning. I assume people are living in them. It's amazing the feel one can get for an area from walking around in it rather than just whizzing by in a car. I've had several conversations with people who are hanging around. They have all been quite nice and seem to enjoy the chance to chat, as did I.

Here I sit playing with, ummmm, the hotel wifi. p:

honey, we are home

The rig is back in the driveway after our approx. 5000 mile (8000+ km) odyssey. The space shuttle (the trailer) has been "undocked" the the unloading begins. Our trips through the jungles of Mexico were a piece of cake compared to this little sortie. I'm not sure when we will take such a major trip again. I guess when the bug bites, we have the money and time off, and Jupiter aligns with Mars.

Image #1: Though we only have a little house and don't own anything truly expensive, I had motion sensor cameras watching the driveway and the inside of the house so that if we were robbed, there might be a chance of seeing who did it. One camera caught us backing the trailer into the driveway. Techno spiffy huh!

Image #2: Reedplayernc rooting around inside the mighty house-on-wheels that was our home for nearly three weeks.

Image #3: The bed of the pickup still packed with stuff.

Image #4: It's hard to see the thousands of dead bugs and dirt all over the truck. Aside from nearly overheating it twice while pulling steep grades in the deserts of Nevada, it gave no problems.....well, not yet.

overnight at another truckstop

Continuing east on the journey home from burningman, we are overnighting (boondocking in RV lingo) at another Pilot travel center in Missouri. Just 980 more miles to go. Sometimes we use the trucker
showers at these places. They are nicer then you would think with locking doors and a tiny private room. More about life on the road later.

I'm way up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina for work. I checked into the hotel and found this delightful computer desk complete with choice of wired or wireless Internet and flat screen TV. Very comfy! I brought the tomatoes from home. I can't wait to see the cute mountain critters at work tomorrow. :D

soul food and mexican in south carolina

, , , ...

As I crisscross the Carolinas this week for work, one of my stops was Hardeeville, South Carolina. They have good food and Internet there. Hardeeville has a local net provider and my hotel was connected to it. The upload/download speeds were mind blowing. My cable net connection at home is from a national carrier, and while the download is great, the upload sucks.

I ate both the soul food and the Mexican seen advertised in the following pictures. The soul food wins in this town. :chef:

I like the mix of English/Spanish in the images.

in the lobby of a cheap hotel doing wifi

, , , ...

Another week on the road in South Carolina.

I went to Olive Garden for lunch to fill up on salad, and now I'm in the lobby of another badass Motel 6 because the wifi signal is weak in my room. A guy in a Lincoln pulled up screeching the tires. He ran up to the hotel desk and asked the woman there, "I need a room for 45 minutes, just 45 minutes, you got anything?" She stepped away for about a minute, came back and said, "$20...cash". He tossed a twenty, she tossed the key. I couldn't help but glance into the passenger side of the Lincoln. NASTY! lol.

Love for sale...rooms by the hour. We'll leave the light on for you.
