Sus(i)e

, , ,

Suse(I call it Susie) is one of Linux distro's. And to be perfectly honest - my favourite one. Unfortunately Suse had a big(imho) flow which was lack of apt-get. Instead of it Suse has YaST which is fine until the thing you're installing doesn't require dependencies. And dependencies can make your life a hell. If there's an easy way of installing them using YaST - great but I don't know it and being just average(skill-wise) Linux user I'm not 100% comfortable installing missing packages.
Then I tried KUbuntu and as much as I liked sleek look of Suse ease of use won this time.
It was until recently. I had a chat with my bf and he told me about similar problems he had using RedHat. And when I have a choice - he doesn't, as their work server runs RH. So when he recently found out that it is possible to install apt-get for RedHat(it may be old news, I know) I decided I'll look for similar solution for Suse. And I was a little bit surprised when I found that page:

So today or tomorrow I'll try to get it working on my laptop

Yay, I would be really happy if it works - I miss Suse very much! It's a great system and not having apt-get was a major problem for me.

UPDATE:

Installed Suse no problem. I went for (quite) new KDE 4.0(current version is 4.1 afaik). I wasn't happy with my mouse performance and that's when my bf took over. He didn't fix the mouse but said he installed and fixed all the things I need - whatever it means  I haven't touch the laptop since - it was yesterday but I'll try it and ask him what he changed and of course update it here. I think at the moment laptop is running KDE 3.5.

PS. A little bit off-topic: I found a page with different distro-related wallpapers:

Suse forever. A tak na serio to mam openSuse na seriwe z bazami i Suse SLES na serwie z kilkoma usługami. Generalnie też jestem fanem Susła (wolętąnazwę a nie Susi)

I should seriously try Suse. I've been meaning to download it for a while. I'm a big fan of Ubuntu and ArchLinux, but I'm always open to trying something new.

For last year or so I was using (K)Ubuntu and was really happy with it. I think I should add some update on Sus(i)e and how it works.
I wasn't really happy with Suse @ 10.x as she was crushing from time to time. Kubuntu was much more stable although in looks department Suse is way ahead of Ubuntu. But sometimes looks looses with stability.
I had other distros before, starting with RH 7-something, Mandrake and Mandriva and for a short while Knoppix but overall (sorry Susie) I think Kubuntu is best distro I ever had.

I installed Suse on VirtualBox yesterday. It looks really beautifull and overall it's a nice system. It comes with a nice selection of software and it's easy to configure. It also comes with a VERY impressive amount of drivers.

The one place where it sucks is package management. Suse has to have the worst package manager I've ever used on any version of Linux, and I've been using Linux since 2000 and have tried so many distros I've lost count. It was doing the stupidest things like trying to download security updates from the DVD instead of the Internet!!?? Aside from that it rocks.

I assume there should be a choice where do you want to be upgrading from.
I tried to have a look on my Suse but got really annoyed with the 'mouse' and am afraid will have to use USB one.

According to Linux Magazine or Linux Format Suse 11 has completely new package manager as a lot users changed the distro because of troubles with it. Haven't tried that yet but maybe you would consider getting apt-get for it?

I ended up disabling the DVD in the repositories and was able to update the system. Still, I would have thought that the updater would be "smarter". :D

I might install apt if I decide to run this on my laptop. So far it's just a virtual machine that I used to get a feel for the system so I'm not too worried about it. I can see why people like the system though. It's no doubt the most attractive version of Linux I've ever seen. It was worth the download.
